1 star because zero isn't an option I didn't know Jade Palace was running a social experiment on how little food you can serve for $34 before someone calls the health department, but here we are. First off, I've been to plenty of Chinese spots in my life, and even the hole-in-the-wall places will heap you up like they're trying to feed a football team. Not here. These folks handed me what can only be described as a pup cup of rice. Like literally, I could've ordered a Starbucks dog treat and come out with more carbs. Then came the "egg rolls." Spoiler: they weren't egg rolls. They were limp, barely warmed-up spring rolls stuffed with sadness. Two of them. I ordered egg rolls and ended up with appetizers straight out of a gas station freezer section. Uncooked on the inside too--crunchy outside, still questioning life on the inside. Beautiful. Now let's talk about the chicken and broccoli. Usually this dish comes swimming in sauce--like the kind you actually want to drown your rice in. Instead, I got a dry broccoli funeral with a few strips of chicken sprinkled on top. No juice. No flavor. Just vibes. Honestly, if my Tupperware lid had more moisture from condensation than my meal, something went terribly wrong in the kitchen. $34 for this? Jade Palace, y'all should be arrested for armed robbery with chopsticks. At this point, I'm convinced the chef just saw me walk in and thought, "Let's see how far we can push this guy before he calls the health department." Well congratulations, I'm one step away from dialing. If you're into overpriced rabbit portions, mystery eggroll-spring-roll hybrids, and flavorless broccoli fitness bowls, Jade Palace is the spot for you. If you actually like Chinese food? Do yourself a favor and eat literally anywhere else--even Panda Express would be fine dining compared to this nonsense. read more

higher prices super small portions on the rice be ready to pay 17-22 bucks per person or more. i order the larger full evening portions not the lunch portions. my go to is still the moo goo gai pan. the food flavor and taste was good. just smaller portions than from other places. and so i need to fire up the rice cooker for a portion before i pick up the order to go. that way i have enough to feed a hungry person. if you are eating 3 to 4 meals per day the portion here will be enough. read more

It seems like they ran out of beef today. I always order beef with green peppers and Mongolian beef. I spent $43 along with house fried rice. Today I found that the beef that they add to both dishes, made a split and divided for both dishes. I will not visit this restaurant again. I live in town but this is not right. My mom and I had lunch at the Jade Palace before heading home for the day. She shared with me that the restaurant was previously a church. The decor is neutral contemporary which I highly prefer over the overt Chinese style, although some do it justice. No hate please - I ordered the tofu and vegetables with steamed rice. I prefer to feed my body a plant based diet free of fried foods the majority of the time. But, while I am in Iowa I will be indulging in my love of the pork tenderloin, Canteen, homemade pies, and local ice cream shops. The vegetables were fresh and cooked crisp, just right, and the tofu was lightly pan fried. I appreciated the fact that the sauce was light and not drowning out my meal. Visually, my dish looked wonderful. But - the taste was extremely bland - a true zero on the heat index. Note: the waitress did not ask. I requested hot sauce and they offered chili paste. Over priced marginal food. I had the chicken lo mein. It was 9.25 for a side order portion. The chicken is small pieces that are indecipherable as to if they are white or dark meat. Egg roll was rock hard on the exterior and mush inside. It's edible Chinese food for ottumwa Iowa but that's still not saying much. read more

I came to Ottumwa to help some geocaching friends cleaning up Wildwood Park last weekend. After we were done one of our group members recommended we go for Chinese at Jade Palace. I was the only non-Ottumwan in the group and since they know the best places to eat, I always take their word for it. They wouldn't lead me astray. So we all met up at Jade Palace. First off, this place has a nice feel to it. The lighting isn't too bright, nor so dark that you feel like you're eating in a cave. The tables and chairs were modern and the atmosphere was totally laid back. I have been to some Chinese places where there is a lot of yelling from the staff, rude customers and just the clamor of work going on, which ruins the mood. This place was not like that at all. They have the typical huge Chinese menu. I don't know how many items there are on the menu itself, but there are at least one-hundred. Our large table had a varied assortment of orders including: Kung Pao Chicken (my dish), Beef Lo-Mein, Sweet & Sour Chicken, Garlic Chicken, steamed dumplings, egg rolls and hot tea. The Kung Pao Chicken was really good! It wasn't extremely spicy, just right. I also had the crab rangoon, which I thought was really good as well. No complaints from the table, other than that the dumplings were a bit rubbery. They give you a big portion. If you leave hungry it's your own fault. My friends were correct - Jade Palace is probably the best Chinese food in Ottumwa, likely all of Southeast Iowa. I definitely recommend it! read more

It certainly could have used more spice (I carry my own) so I added mine. None the less it was very good. I will definitely be ordering from here again read more

So, the old guy and our granddaughter went there and a note on the door says closed June 29-Aug 7. They should of mentioned it because who knew "later" meant over a month! read more

I hardly ever eat American type of Chinese food but when I was stuck in a little town in Iowa and pulling those long 12 hour shifts, a girl had to do what a girl must do, feed da beast! I was amazed at how yummy and edible the food was. I had kungpao triple delight. None of that floating brown gravy was present. Came with a small scoop of rice and a Rangoon. Also skipped the soup, not a fan of corn starch soup. The only thing I would have liked more is less peanuts please. Going back there for few more shifts and will definitely their food on my weak days, ya know, the days I can't stay away from carbs!! read more

Delicious! The veggies were all crisp and fresh. Crab Rangoon had the perfect cream cheese/crab ratio. The tea was great and they have imported Asian beers. Also domestic if that's more your thing. the menu was large with a nice selection of items. I'd recommend it to anyone, we'll be back for sure. read more

This place is fairly new to Ottumwa and a breath of fresh air in a stale restaurant scene. The food is top notch and the service is just as good. The large portions are probably more than most people would expect. Everything is cooked to order and there are plenty of options that can help you explore the menu like the dinner for 2,3 or more. The dining room is modest but very clean and nice and the imported beers are a nice touch to an already great place to eat. I highly recommend checking this place out. The Crispy Honey Chicken and Orange Chicken are both excellent choices but don't be afraid to try everything on the menu. 6 out of 7 Rangoons. The decor was nice. We especially the like jade bok choy. The food was excellent. The soup was tasty and the lunch special was a great deal! Totally unimpressed! This was the most bland tasting Chinese food I have ever ate. We tried the twice cooked pork (which didn't have any chili peppers in it at all) and the Mongolian beef (tasteless). The sweet and sour sauce was pasty and didn't taste good either. Tried to eat there tonight with my wife, young child and my parents. Standing at desk waiting to be seated when hostess walks up, looks over my wife's shoulder and asks the man behind our party who just walked in, how many. He stated he thought we were there before him and the hostess stated she would find a table for us and then proceeded to sit his family. After being sat after him, we waited 12 minutes for someone to finally come by the table to take a drink order. We ordered food then as well. 6:36pm. At 7:35 pm, no food and not one time during this 59 minutes did a single wait person or host come by our table and ask for refills on drinks or apologize for length of time it was taking. Eventually my young child ran out of patience and he and I had to leave. Can't rate food since never got to try it, but worst service experience I have had in Ottumwa ( and that is saying something ) read more
