When you retain a firm, you don't quite know what to expect in terms of response time, bedside manner, level of service, or the results they will produce. My experience was that there was little to no communication. I often drafted emails that received no replies and felt like I was speaking to myself. I requested time to prepare for settlement talks, to be apprised of the current status of my case, and to discuss options before trial. These requests were never answered. In fact, the only reply I received was that they didn't have time to review my emails. When I was able to get them on Zoom, their cameras were kept off. I was cut off and not allowed to speak. I eventually circled back with the Legal Aid office and was told I could simply end my case by handing in my key. I hadn't known that, and I'm concerned because, before trial, they had stated that I could receive first month's rent, last month's rent, and my deposit due to my disability and rights under the ADA. These options simply weren't addressed. Emails were ignored. Heather Ticotin is underpaid and disgruntled. Expect same-day preparation of around five minutes, followed by being threatened if you speak up. More concerningly, I was told that offers had been presented by opposing counsel, which I only learned about afterward. Despite requesting time to prepare for settlement talks, we never met. Meetings weren't offered, and the firm simply didn't reply to emails. When I sent a polite email requesting to switch attorneys within the firm, Joshua Price responded in the same manner others are describing in their reviews: abusive language, silly or frankly drunken replies, and then being ignored. I'll screenshot what I have, but you should also Google the firm and read through the reviews. The firm is unprofessional. I'm confident that if I had followed the free advice I received from Legal Aid, I would have received the roughly $10,000 settlement they had indicated my case was worth. Instead, I decided to ensure a firm secured that outcome, and the experience turned out much worse because my trust was abused. Just use free legal aid unless you're confident you have a valid ADA or other valuable claim. If you're told you have one, then do retain a firm just not this one. Avoid them because they won't investigate these avenues and won't reply to you once the retainer is paid.

I was charged legal fees to reschedule and adjourn a court appearance that was necessitated solely by Ms. Dahlen's own calendar unavailability. Basic procedural matters were handled poorly, including court documents being filed under the wrong document category on NYSCEF and Ms. Dahlen demonstrating unfamiliarity with standard Family Court confidentiality rules by asking me to retrieve protected court records myself. Following the breakdown of the relationship, the firm failed to turn over billed work products (despite being paid in full) while improperly conditioning the production of case records on additional payment. Eventually, the matter proceeded to an official hearing before the court's Part 137 Fee Dispute Arbitration Program. The arbitrator reviewed the billing records, ruled in my favor, and ordered a $1,482.00 refund. Following the decision, my formal written requests for payment were met with accusations of harassment rather than professional resolution, and the awarded funds were remitted only at the very end of the statutory window. While her office staff (Stephanie and Tatiana) were polite, Ms. Dahlen herself was rude, dismissive, and unapproachable. At every stage of the matter, from questioning unearned fees to demanding compliance with the arbitrator's ruling, Ms. Dahlen deflected legitimate queries by mischaracterizing routine client communications as 'harassment' and threatened legal action to avoid accountability for her billing entries and eventual arbitration defeat. Based on my experience with billing practices, procedural shortcomings, and unprofessional communication, I would not recommend this firm.

It quiet frankly embarrassing being represented by her at our closing. She showed up late with multiple incorrect documents. At one point during our closing preparation she said and I quote 'I don't look at contracts' when I asked her to review something. Please save yourself the headache and most likely money and do not let her represent you.
