Not at all impressed with these guys. To second the other Yelpers' comments, they seemed more concerned about talking up their services than actually performing them. The inspector sent me on a wild goose chase regarding several issues that he suggested I contact a "professional" about. I understand they have to be cautious to cover their own butts in this day and age but this was ridiculous and a complete waste of time/money/effort. Last but not least, their radon test is a complete ripoff. I think they charged me $90. Do yourself a favor and buy one online for $35. I would not use them again. read more

Initially, the inspection seemed to go well. Glen Grutta was sent out by the company, and was professional and well-informed. Later, however, a major problem appeared which was missed by Mr. Grutta and not addressed by Ray Jackson, owner of the company. Furthermore, evidence of this issue was mentioned (and misdiagnosed) specifically in Grutta's report, though his firm failed to take responsibility for it later on. To begin, in November, 2014, Jackson Home Inspection came out to inspect a property in Arlington which we later bought. When we had lived the property for less than 6 weeks, major ice dams appeared, but thanks to the newly installed roof, we had no leaks, save for by the chimney. Once the ice melted and we were able to have someone look at the chimney, it immediately became clear that Mr. Grutta had missed a substantial lean in the chimney, a problem which needed to be remedied immediately lest the entire chimney fall, and would cost us $7,000 - $13,000 to repair. Surprised that such an obvious problem had been missed, we went back over the inspection with two contractors and a structural engineer, and all all found that what Mr. Grutta thought was badly applied caulking was, in reality, clear evidence of this lean (see attached pictures). Additionally, further inspection of the chimney revealed yet more evidence of problems, namely telltale cracks in the foundation. With this information in hand, we contacted Ray Jackson looking for some compensation for having missed this issue. In response to our letter, Mr. Jackson sent back a letter filled with typos which failed to grasp the thrust of our concerns, and instead tried to deflect responsibility onto, for example, the first floor unit owner (with whom, by law we were unable to communicate prior to purchase), the Division of Professional Licensure (who informed us of our rights to issue a formal complaint), and the fireplace repairman (who was hired precisely because Mr. Jackson's liability extends only to external, structural issues, as opposed to those related to the firebox and other elements of the chimney). Unfortunately I can't figure out how to post pictures, but regardless, our problems boil down to the following: Jackson Home Inspection missed, and refused to take responsibility for missing the fact that the chimney is obviously leaning. 1. The caulking running up the inside corner between the chimney and the shingles has clearly been applied in an attempt to close a gap resulting from the chimney's increasing lean. 2. There is a substantial gap between the shingles and the caulking indicating that the chimney continued to move after the caulking was applied. 3. The cracks in the foundation beneath the shingles also indicate the lean. These issues were noted, but misinterpreted, in Mr. Grutta's report. For example, in multiple places, Grutta mentions "Questionable Asphalt Sealer Installation" on the chimney. This "asphalt sealer" was not, in fact, poorly installed, but was instead evidence of a much bigger structural issue. Jackson Home Inspection has been rude and uncooperative, leaving us with little recourse but to file here on Angie's List and hope that no one else suffers from the same negligence. read more

My wife and I worked with Steve Reid on an inspection of new construction in Lexington. Steve spent 3 hours with us, identifying a punch list of items that the builder should resolve before closing. He took time to explain each item, to explain everything he was looking for, to identify ways in which the house met or exceeded code, etc. We could not have been more pleased with him. Last week, we had an offer accepted on a house and we called Jackson to set up an appointment. I learned about Jackson Home Inspection during a home buying class I took a few years ago. This company was great - from booking the appointment on a days notice to providing an extremely thorough inspection. Josh was my inspector. He got there before me and had already started walking around the exterior. He was patient with my first time home buyer questions. He spent an hour and a half looking at a 1100 sq ft condo, much longer than I would have expected from what others told me. According to Yelp, 2 stars means "Meh. I've experienced better." That was my experience with Honchoy Chan, a newer inspector at Jackson. He's been doing inspections for a long time elsewhere, so he's not new to the industry, just new to Jackson. An inspection is not about glossy reports but about how thorough the inspector is and how much experience and wisdom he brings to the table. Chan is a friendly and chatty guy. He did the inspection moderately thoroughly and uncovered some problems (it's a 60 year old house after all) but didn't really point out things that any careful person wouldn't have noticed. In other words, I don't think he went the extra mile as an inspector. He just did his job. The negative aspect was that when I simply asked if he goes on rooftops (my previous inspector did) he got really defensive and went on and on about liability issues. I understand if that's how he feels and if that's company policy but his attitude raised a red flag. Also, he peeked in the attic and gave a cursory look but if he wasn't going to climb onto the roof at least he should have thoroughly inspected it from the attic. He didn't. You may have better luck with the other inspectors from Jackson who got rave reviews. read more

Ray did our inspection. Jackson was recomended by our broker and we could not have been happier with the inspection. Without asking Ray went through items that home buying classes told us we would have to make sure inspectors didnt skip, like opening every window and testing every electric outlet. Ray gave us ideas about how to cheaply and effectively look at repairing the home. He told us what to watch out for when hiring contractors and explained failings the home has and maintenance the home would need very well. Additionally, he told us some of the tests we had asked him to perform didnt make sense for the property we were looking at. To be clear, he told us to pay him less. Very seldom have i come across a transaction I have felt this good about. We left getting far more than we had hoped, if you get a chance use these guys. read more

I hardly write a review for anyone but I have to do this for Chris! He was such a knowledgable and patient inspector who helped us go through every single detail of a 5 family unit. Even though it was on Mother's Day and the seller agent was in a bad mood and constantly rushed him to finish early. But he didn't listen to her. He took a good 3 hour to point out every single thing that we need to know about the house and followed up with a detail report later on at night on the same day. Ray Jackson- The owner did home inspection for the property we were buying in Newton on 08/08 and it was a disaster. He missed a major defect in heating system. It is now going to cost us close to 5.5K . Right after buying a house, you are not looking forward to this kind of expense which could have been avoided if the home inspector would have done his job. Even worse, I sent a grievance letter to them and they completely ignored it. I would have appreciated atleast an acknowledgement. How unprofessional they can be. He charges more than other companies and that made me think he probably does a good job but No. I would NEVER recommend it to my friends and family. I've worked with ray twice now, and both times he has been fantastic. He is very thorough and detailed. He doesn't mind at all being followed around and asked stupid questions, and he explains everything clearly and patiently. Although he gives a good idea of all concerns a home buyer should be aware of, he is not an alarmist. He doesn't try to scare the buyer into excessive, unnecessary tests. We found, after two years in our first home, that Ray's comments were entirely accurate, and he was able to help us quite a bit with the inspection of our second home. We have had Jackson Home Inspections do two different inspections for us - our first inspector was Glen, the second was Josh. Both of them did a terrific job. They were thorough, answered questions as they went and explained everything well, and their reports were detailed. Glen actually saved us from buying a house that had major foundation problems and carbon monoxide. Both times, we were trying to arrange inspections for a week or less in advance and Jackson Home Inspection was available when many others weren't. The cost was quite reasonable. This was a terrible inspection experience. An inspector who claims to be "thorough" but actually fills the report with inaccuracies, and many exaggerations, only brings a lot of stress to both the buyer and the seller. It seems that a smart inspector will always ask up front- what are you paying for this house, to determine what you should be getting for your money. Then, gives you an accurate assessment. I just had a home inspection done today by Jackson Home Inspection. Glen arrived before time and went around the entire condo building complex making note of all important and minor things and explaining things along the way including construction etc. He took a good 11/2-2 hrs to inspect the premises and the apartment in question thoroughly checking every utility and every piece of the apartment. He also tried to go to the roof but it was not accessible....Argh!! sellers agents. He did a great job was courtious, explained how things work.
