We took our 4 grandchildren to the free fly fishing day and both kids and grandparents were very impressed with the quality of instruction given by Dan, originally from Charleston SC. He had great visuals and hands-on activities which simultaneously met the learning needs of an 8 year old, a 16 year old and 2 in-betweens. I hate to do this, but a fishing guide should know where the fish are biting; he didn't and we got skunked on a full day trip for two on our 20th wedding anniversary. We fished yesterday and I made my displeasure clear several times on the water and off that we were here to catch fish not just take a pleasure rafting trip. I assume he either didn't tell the proprietor or they don't care as they've had yesterday afternoon/evening and all morning today to reach out (it's now noon the following day). Given the crickets, I'm now writing this review. Initially I spoke with Brian on the phone and he put me at ease as did their online reviews. After finding out that we wanted to catch fish and have views he recommended the Snake River for a full day session. Admittedly he said it was one of the final days for fishing the Snake as the water would be rising later this week, but that we would still be good. We shouldn't expect champion trophies as that was another river, but it would still be plenty of cutt-throat Troutt and a lot of fun with an insane view. Typically 2 out of 3 ain't bad, but given we were there for fish, the view and fun only equate to 1 Star. Admittedly we got 1 bite the entire 6+ hours and I reeled it in so we didn't get completely skunked, but I could have saved half the money and just done the scenic raft tour twice as that's effectively what we received. - 5 stars: fishing guide + 5 stars: equipment + 5 stars: views + 5 stars: fun on the river + 2 stars: education (based on expectation set by other reviews) We had Ian and he was a nice guy and overall we had a good trip with some laughs. I like the guy personally and other than catching fish, we had a great time on the river. However, he admitted at the beginning of the day that this was only his 3rd official outing this year on the Snake and later that he had never personally fished from the groups fishing holes. Neither are good signs as both caused alarm. He didn't know where the fish were biting and it seemed clear that this is not his normal fishing area. That's an absolute first for a fishing guide and not a good first. When you're paying this type of money for a fishing guide you should expect them to be intimately familiar with the water and be able to put you on fish. That was most definitely NOT the case. He clearly knows fly fishing and there definitely was some education, but nothing like what was described by other reviewers. I caught on almost immediately and received a few solid tips from him as he mainly focused on helping my wife. We're both first timers, but were quickly casting to specific areas he would point out and following whatever instruction he gave to improve our odds. I think he really tried to help us catch and even verbalized his frustration a few times at us getting skunked, but at the end of the day, it's his job and the reason we pay the hefty fee, for him to know all the honey holes and where the fish are biting today. Did I mention it was our 20th wedding anniversary and we chose to fish for the day? The Good: Ian is a nice guy who loves Fly Fishing They have good equipment and handle all the details They have a cool spot/camp off the river that's a great place to relax and have your lunch The Snake views are stunning In the first 5 minutes we saw a moose, a marmont and was almost boarded by a beaver The Bad: Doesn't know where to find fish on the Snake Doesn't fish this river enough to know where they are biting Isn't a fishing guide at least for this river Bottom line: if you don't care about catching fish and just want to have a good time with great views, then this is the school/guide for you. read more

JHFFS offers a unique opportunity for anyone wanting to have a hands-on way of learning/improving fly fishing. The walk-wade school is a comprehensive training, from entomology, casting technique, equipment, fly selection, line mending, and reading the water. Our guide, Jake, did a great job addressing the needs and educating participants from the first-time to the more advanced. He critiqued my technique on more advanced casting like double-hauling, and aerial mending. The only reason I didn't give 5 stars was because of some hiccups in the booking process. I feel that these issues are probably few and far between. JHFFS is excellent and offers something you will not easily find. Most guides have a primary goal of making sure the client catches fish THAT TRIP. JHFFS, in my opinion, is more focused on teaching participants to be able to learn/improve a skills that will allow them to catch fish IN THE FUTURE. And, still catch some fish that day. I would recommend for anyone who is open to learning from a seasoned guide who is willing to answer all level of questions. read more

Our family of four had a great time learning to fly fish. Our guide Tucker was very patient with all of us (my husband, two teens, and myself) as we were all newbies. We thoroughly enjoyed our time on the boat learning about it and then trying it out. Tucker was great with tips, critique, and praise. He even brought fixings for sandwiches, fruit, cookies and water. We all caught a fish ... and I was the winner with two! It wasn't cheap, but a great family experience on our Jackson, WY vacation that we will never forget. read more

I have used Jackson Hole Fly Fishing School last year from their camp along the Snake, and twice this year doing a two day drift boat event along the Snake as well. Day one was the lower half of the Snake with Spencer, from their camp south. Day two was with Jake, from the Wilson bridge over the Snake to their camp. I couldn't be more pleased. I stopped counting the Cutthroat and Snake River Rainbow as we caught so many. Both days this year we stopped along the river to wade and search out of some of the harder to find fish in back waterways. Jake and Spencer both anchored my fishing experience in understanding the fish, where they are and why and what they are rising for. I always come away in awe of their experience, their patience with me and most importantly, how much I always learn. I've been coming to JH every October for nearly 30 years; this was by far the best 2 days fishing I've ever had there. Thanks guys for showing me an amazing experience. See you next year! read more

A friend and I just finished a full day drift boat trip on the Snake River with our guide, Tucker. I had very little fly fishing experience before the trip but with Tucker's excellent and patient instruction, I was catching fish throughout the day. We caught fish on nymph rigs as well as on dry flies, so I got good experience with both. Our guide picked us up at our hotel right on schedule and provided everything we needed for the day's fishing--all the gear as well as food and drinks. I learned a great deal from Tucker and can't imagine how I could have had a better time. read more

If you're looking for some fly fishing guidance in Jackson Hole, this is the place to go! My brother-in-law and I had never fly fished before, but we were interested in learning. We spent about a half day with Caleb and had a great time. I was worried that it might be difficult to learn and execute, but Caleb's instruction was really good. He first walked us through the different types of waterbugs/flies and why you'd choose certain types for certain locations and times of year. This was a part of fly fishing that I didn't realize was so important to know. We eventually got our waders and boots on and hiked out to a river where we were taught the techniques for casting. We were allowed to practice for while with just the line in order to get the proper technique started. Caleb gave us tips and corrections to make sure we were casting our lines properly and hitting the spots of the river we were aiming for. Then we added nymphs and eventually bobbers and we were fly fishing. We were taken to different spots along the river and taught to look for eddies and different currents within the river. Water levels were really high the day we went, which made the water muddy for fishing. We did, however, have a great time and felt pretty good about handing the fly rods. We are definitely purchasing fly rods and sharpening our skills at home. After fishing, we sat in their outdoor office and pulled off our waders and boots. They brought us cold drinks, apple wedges, orange wedges and crackers. We met a great group of guys who treated us like family and taught us a lot. My wife and I planned a trip to the Tetons in October and last minute, decided to add some fly fishing to our schedule. After reading some reviews, we decided on Jackson Hole Fly Fishing school as their offerings were inline with what we were looking for and the pricing was right. After inquiring, we were told that as it was so late in the season, they had no classes that we could join :( but for a little more they could offer us a private session for two. We decided to go for it and we're glad we did. Our Guide's name was Ben and he made sure that my wife and I gained some knowledge about the fish, lifespan, their habitats, diet, etc (which being nature kinda folks, we were super into) but then geared up and went out to make some fishing happen. All I can say is that we caught more fish in an hour than I've caught all year (which isn't saying much cause I didn't get out much last year) but regardless, we were bringing them in and were super excited! I didn't realize how much a guide in a place like JH helps, but with the river regulations and private property, it does make a difference. Also, we got some good local beer recommendations.
