78/100 Lua Vietnamese Cuisine was a polarized experience -…read moreon one hand the food was way better than I was expecting, but on the other hand, the interior was a bit grimy and wait time was long (for service, but not for food to arrive) even though most of the restaurant was empty. --- I dined for weekday lunch as a party of four at Lua Vietnamese Cuisine. There were many empty tables with dirty dishes left on them, which to me suggested they were understaffed that day. To my knowledge, Lua was recently constructed, however the booth seating was already ripping and the floor and booth seams were honestly grimy. I would've expected those from a hole in the wall restaurant, but it looks really modern and "elevated" inside. My menu was dirty and I didn't realize it was missing some pages (because the pages ripped from the staple) so I thought the menu was a lot smaller than it was. I hope they find a better way of cleaning the restaurant interior and menus, and update the menus to higher quality. I ordered (S3)- Vietnamese Dried Noodles, which came with a bowl of soup. The rest of my party ordered (A16)- Butter Glazed Fried Quail and (B4)- Grilled Pork and Spring Roll on Rice Vermicelli. -I ended up eating the (S3) Dried Noodles for four days because of the shear quantity of them, so to me it was incredible value. And it had a fair portion of seafood and the flavor was actually surprisingly super delicious, if not a bit sweet. I had an upset stomach that day and was happily surprised this dish came with soup. I would reorder this, especially if I was hungry. -For me, the quail (A16) was a little dry but well seasoned. There were two quails in the serving. I would reorder this again only if I was craving small bites. - The pork chop (B4) was on the above average side in terms of taste, but fairly large in terms of size. There was rice, spring roll, egg omlette, along with other sides. Overall, Lua Vietnamese Restaurant had an extensive menu and I really enjoyed the food. However, while the food was quick to come out, the table service was painfully slow and the interior was grimy. I'd recommend giving it a try if you're in the area, but not in a rush.

The service is prompt based on the day/time of visiting but it is a nice atmosphere for eating some good Vietnamese food especially during the winter months. I was tempted to get the mini meal since I don't eat a lot, but I ultimately caved and decided to get the combo meal since I wanted to try the Kailua pork too. The verdict? The Kailua pork was a little too salty for me, it comes mixed with like cabbage or lettuce, and overall very mushy which I didn't mind. However the Chicken Katsu came with a bbq type sauce and everyone thought the sauce was delicious. My fiance ordered the bbq mix which included the bbq chicken, beef, and short ribs and I thought the beef was so yummy. The portion size was big. All the combos come with either 1-2 scoops of rice and macaroni salad. My meal was pretty perfect for 2 whole meals for me. I ate the katsu with my leftover rice for breakfast the next morning! Since it's not really close to me, I had not really had the opportunity to try it, so I figured it was worth making a specific trip out for it. When we got there, we noticed the building had very locked windows, which we thought was peculiar, but when you walk inside, you can see why. The atmosphere here is definitely a touch of paradise. The inside is decorated, and it really does feel like a little bit of a tropical getaway. The staff here were friendly and were able to make some recommendations. The drinks were pretty good, and I really liked the food I got. I'd ordered the Four Seasons, which had a little bit of everything. We also split a pu pu platter since a lot of people had talked about it and I felt like we couldn't really get the true experience without having it. All in all, while I don't think I will be a regular here due to the distance, I look forward to coming back again if I am ever local at all and I would definitely stop by if you like tiki drinks and good food.

I understand the impact that a single one star review can have on a small business. But this restaurant behaved in a way that seemed like they literally do not care one bit. And judging by the other recent one star reviews, I see I'm not alone. Which is a shame really, because this restaurant could be something great. I had been planning to visit for my birthday. I had heard of Lee's for years, and have always wanted to go. I was finally ready to make the trek from Queens to NJ, with 9 friends in tow. So I excitedly called to make a reservation. The conversation started out completely normal. He put me on hold (no biggie) to get the reservation book, asked me how many people, and the date. He then went into a list of "rules" they have for reservations. With each point, he was seething with annoyance. Like they're doing their customers a huge favor. But I didn't mind, I just wanted to make the reservation. $75 deposit. Fine. If we cancel for any reason they keep the deposit. Fine. It can be used as a credit if we come another day. Ok. He said a few other rules, and one stuck out to me that I didn't understand. He said "there's no reserved seating". As the point of my phone call was to make a - reservation - I asked to clarify, literally in the nicest tone. He immediately got annoyed at me, and said that they have upstairs and downstairs seating, and they can't guarantee either or. It was at this point I said to him, "I feel like you're upset with me and I'm not sure why." I then explained that I've never been there, but I'm a huge fan and have always wanted to visit, and that this would be for my birthday. I tried to give him a chance to reset and steer the conversation back to- at the very least a calm tone. Spoiler alert- didn't work. He then asks me what time I want. I say 6 PM. You would have thought I just asked him to give me the moon. He got very upset and went on a rant about how "people come, and then the music (he was referring to the karaoke) starts and then they leave." I told him we actually wanted the music, that I knew it started at 7:30 PM and was requesting 6 PM so that we had some time to talk before the karaoke began. He very angrily told me no, that I had to pick one or the other. That if I wanted music, it had to be a reservation after 7 PM- that I had to pick one or the other. And then went on another rant about "changing over the tables" and "they don't want people there til closing" and "how do I expect them to make money." Well for starters, you can provide basic customer service. It was at this point I thanked him for his time and said I didn't want to go there anymore. It's clear they have had various issues with prior customers. But I did not deserve to be treated like that. After hanging up, I was devasted. My birthday plans had crumbled in the span of a 7 minute phone call. Luckily I found another establishment more than happy to take my reservation- and my hard earned money.

Meeting the vineyard manager and the farmers who worked hard to supply the produce was a nice touch, also the chef and kitchen crew. Our friendly wait staff were always there on top of any requests. The hot weather was the only downside to a wonderful dinner. Lots of positive comments on the shrimp corn bisque and even the ratatouille. A great night experience either way friends.
