    Iced Mountie

This place is so cute and cozy. Their selection of drinks and pastries is very good. I got the iced mountie and it was so good. I will definitely be stopping by again.

    Small hot mocha.

I was in the Village for work (buying the works of Kafka and Kerouac; great writers must also be great readers) when the impulse struck me: I needed a mocha. My friends who know me dearly know one truth about my nature: a hot mocha will either solve my problems or ruin my day. I have come to accept my soul's volatile unrest (read: my mocha dependence) as innate and impossible to rectify. Any attempts at salvation--Rettung, for my German readers--would be to no avail. A profound vanity (German: Eitelkeit) pervades such attempts. O, I love to reference the Baroque! I looked up Jack's then. (It was down the block from the bookstore and has a Wikipedia page.) I am easily swayed by notoriety--perhaps a character flaw suitable for a chat over lunch with a psychotherapist--and so I went to Jack's. The shop is small. Three tables fill the space, and one barista stood behind the counter. All shots are pulled "ristretto" to ensure smoothness and mitigate any of the beans' bitter notes. A former barista myself, I sometimes fear that "ristretto" is more myth than mortal, but I must be discerning with what I let occupy the lines of my writing and the synapses of my mind. The barista was curt but kind, and the coffee was bitter. Try Jack's for yourself if you would like to tour Manhattan's selection of astringent mochas--caffeinate your way through the city with Jack's and Columbia's campus café for a gustatory experience rife with Hudson River-reminiscent "ristretto-pulled" espresso.

Tried their version of a shakerato with milk and it was just what I needed for a little afternoon pick me up. Pretty standard from what I've tasted around. I would add a little bit of sugar just to take the edge off the bitterness of the coffee as it doesn't come already sweetened.

Cute tiny spot with 3-4 tables- seats maybe 8-9 ppl total. I tried their Americano which was pretty decent- def worth a try. Decor was memorable. No wifi. More of a sit and chat type of place.

My favorite coffee and I DoorDash this all the time, but today I went in the store and the man taking my order was SO RUDE On DoorDash it says the Dirty Harry is a vanilla soy latte rather than vanilla almond latte and asked him if it's a different one than they have on the menu and he they have no soy milk here. I was like oh that's weird because the menu on DoorDash always calls this a soy latte, so the menu's wrong. After he gave me my coffee I went to show him from my phone the DoorDash menu calling the Dirty Harry a vanilla soy latte because this is something I assumed maybe management would want to know if their menu's being inaccurately represented?? And he rudely said to me "I'm sorry I don't care I have to make a coffee". Extremely terrible service, I love this coffee and this makes me not want to return to this location

    All vegan - awesome!

I missed the Yelp check-in offer. Great location with patio seating too. I would have bought beans had I not already picked up around the corner. Love their pastry selection which was pretty much all gluten free and/or vegan. I had the chocolate cream filled cake thingy that mimicked the Hostess thing. It's so much fun when old classics are updated for modern palates. The coffee was coffee to me - nothing to get excited about - but they do offer lots of different ways to enjoy it. It's a good spot in a great location.

I used the 10% check in discount from yelp but it seemed like the cashier had trouble so they ended up giving me 15%. A bit awkward environment the workers were having a loud conversation in front of me. Kinda felt out of place. Coffee was alright. They have a nice outdoor area for sitting

This is the first location of Jack's Stir Brew Coffee, and definitely has all of the charm of the ideal West Village coffee shop. Hot coffee was perfectly good, and the pumpkin loaf was surprisingly moist (you never know with vegan baked goods).

Yes, it's vegan! All their baked goods are vegan!!
    Anthony P.

I kept asking, "Are you SURE this is vegan?". Seems too good to be true. However, all their bakery items are vegan! I was skeptical of the coffee. The stir brew method is patented, and I thought maybe it was a gimmick. However, it's a really great cup! I have tried it black and have had it with almond milk added (brought from home... I work for an almond milk company... but they do have non-dairy milks there). The coffee is organic and fair trade coffee. You can tell that they put a lot of consideration into where/how they source their coffee and how they brew it.

The dining room is spacious and with a nice ambience between the lighting and artwork of willow trees. For dinner - I had the whiskey BBQ brisket and fries. The texture and taste of the "meat" was fantastic. Most meat eaters wouldn't even realize that they are eating plant-based brisket - it was that good! Our server "Teddy" was attentive, informative, friendly - and with a clever sense of humor. The price paid was commensurate for the quality of food and service received. This sandwich is usually not something that is available vegetarian so i was curious to see the flavors and textures. The steak is chewy and meaty so if you are not a fan of faux meat then i would proceed with caution. I enjoy the cheeses here as they are unique and different from each other. The sandwich overall was okay though not my favorite sandwich ever. - smoked Mac and cheese (7/10): macaroni with smoked goat cheese, cheddar, mozzarella baked in a cast iron skillet and topped with vegan pancetta and breadcrumbs. This was a cozy appetizer especially on a cold day. The flavors of the cheese are rich and smoky with a hint of saltiness from the pancetta and breadcrumbs. I would have liked it to be a larger portion and offered as an entree. WOULD I GO BACK? Maybe. I liked the ambiance and the option to try dishes that are usually meat heavy but the cuisine is not my personal favorite.

They take pride in their restaurant's offerings, as they should. My server was wonderful, offering suggestions to this first-timer. I started with a Volcano Roll - hearts of palm substituting for fish. Well balanced and delicious. Next was broccoli "beef" - fresh broccoli and shitake "steak" with mushrooms really balanced the dish. I ended with something so unnecessary and so wonderful, I'm glad I did it: The sticky toffee pudding. Just pure delight. It was relatively quiet when I was there. I could see how it could get a bit noisy if it were crowded. But even so, the people who visit are friendly and I ended up having a great conversation with the table next to me. I'll be back. I'm not exactly local, but it's definitely worth the trip! Planta is on my faves list now!

Funny enough, we met our only other vegan friend there. So, from the vegan perspective, this is a popular and tasty place. We started with drinks, being lunchtime, we opted for non alcoholic drinks, the matcha colada and the salty maple macchiato. The matcha colada had a nice color but tasted mostly like coconut and pineapple which was still yummy. Friends ordered 3 different kinds of sushi and dan dan noodles with tofu. I was confused with the sushi as I thought vegans didn't eat fish...so yes I asked and was told that they probably made the "fish" with tapioca. I did try a bite of each roll (I was still full from the fest) and I was surprised that it tasted pretty good. They did a nice job with the roll and presentation. The matcha cheesecake was nice and creamy. I would not have known it was vegan. I don't normally like food that pretends to be something else because it usually doesn't live up to the real thing. The idea is that it is not pretending to be something but rather substituting with vegan options, I do think from a health perspective, I am more open to trying more vegan foods. Ambiance felt upscale and wait staff were helpful and congenial. I hear dinner time gets packed here. I may have to try again when I have not eaten already.

The space was super clean, calm, and had a vibe that felt authentic to the cuisine. The staff was also incredibly friendly, knowledgeable, and fast, which made the whole experience even better. But the food is what really blew me away. I got the Korean Wild Green Tea First Picked, and it was unreal. Yes, it had that beautiful green tea character, but it was so much more layered than that--smooth, complex, almost naturally sweet, and honestly one of the most memorable teas I've had anywhere. I also ordered the iced matcha latte, and it was easily the best matcha latte I've ever had: no grittiness at all, just incredibly smooth, creamy, and perfectly balanced. We also had the baby dumplings in spicy sauce, popcorn shrimp, fried Manchurian cauliflower, spicy kimchi pancakes, Peking duck baos, and the duck rice bowl. Every single dish was excellent. I'm still baffled by how well they nailed the shrimp texture--seriously impressive. The flavors across the board were rich, creative, and satisfying without feeling heavy. If you're in Murray Hill and want a standout vegan lunch or dinner, or you're just looking for one of the best plant-based restaurants in Manhattan, Franchia is absolutely worth going out of your way for.
