Great gym, people are top-notch. I first went to Jack's because I've been training in mostly grappling-type arts (jiu-jitsu, BJJ) for a number of years and wanted to improve my striking. First things first - if you're just checking out Jack's it can be a bit intimidating for someone new to martial arts. Don't be - they are used to people just starting out, and nobody is going to pick on you for being new. Second, if you're new to fighting or are just wanting to get in shape, give the non-contact and body works classes a try first. Unlike most dojos, Jack's doesn't run classes everyday - most "technique" instruction occurs during the non-contact classes and open gyms are just that - a time for you to come in and do whatever you want, including sparring. Most of the people that come to open gym already know their drills, workouts etc, so it's done mostly without supervision. Third, be prepared to get in shape. I was already in pretty good condition when I went in there and I was amazed how challenging the workouts are. Don't let that stop you if you're new though, work as much as you can and get better everyday. Finally, Jack himself is a great guy. Super-friendly and a great person, but understand he's a boxing coach. He's there to help you, but he's not there to hold your hand. Listen to him, and show him that you want to improve and yes, he'll help you a lot. But yeah, he's not there to motivate you, that's your job. read more
