But the bodega was very neat and clean and smelled fresh. We spent a little time shopping and talking with the young gentleman working there about our next trip to Puerto Rico. We selected an Argentinian Malbec, Italian Sangiovese, California Cab, South African Syrah, and a French Bordeaux. Zach carried our haul to our car and was super friendly and helpful. I must say, the wine tasting party was a hit! Complete with James Suckling wine ratings and delicious charcuterrie boards, the party was fire. The fan favorite? A little-known Western Cape South African Syrah called Essay. We wouldn't have found this hidden gem had it not been for Zach's keen eye in helping us pick international reds. The second positive is that they sell all kinds of stuff including a few cold non-alcoholic drinks which really hit the spot on a Mid-Atlantic summer day. The third positive is that I couldn't believe some of the knock-down prices they have on other stuff that is way, way more expensive out in the rich suburbs. If you happen to be in East Baltimore it's worth coming by to give them a try. The negative, I guess, is that you often have to slip past beggars and panhandlers to get into the store, which isn't really a negative for the store itself, but for Baltimore. It's just sad and we collectively have enough money to take care of the problem. Have you been out to Towson and seen some of the luxury on display in Bel Air, just down the road? I was going to say that Bayview is in a bad part of town but then I realized I only need to say "it's in Baltimore." I'm just kidding. I love Baltimore, and there are lots of lovely parts of Baltimore, but what is clear from knowing this city quite well, is that it needs a lot more love, a lot more understanding, a lot gentler policing, and a hell of a lot of money poured into it.
