I can't believe I have not reviewed Jacki's Barber Shop already! My husband has been going to Angel for probably 15+ years now. We call him Bro Angel, so I will address him that way from now on. Bro Angel is family to us, so I tend to be a bit biased, but I love the work he does. He has cut both my husband's hair and my two sons' hair. My husband is a simple man, so it's not difficult to cut his hair. My boys haven't gone to him as often, but the times they have, he's done an amazing job. We love the friendly puppy they have in the shop. Mr. Benny is now a part of your experience at Jacki's. Benny loves to get petted and take naps in the shop. We love Benny! As long as Bro Angel does not retire, we will be back. Review for female Barber, though not sure she can say she is one! Rushed through talking to the other Barbers the whole few seconds she spent cutting. Left with uneven patches, long hair traveling down my neck and no trim around ears. You have to have an appt for this lousy 5 min. cut and there are no prices posted so I guess it is random. To top it off a Pit Bull roams all over and keeps bothering everyone that comes in. You need to retire. I had to go elsewhere to have it evened out and cut right. That Barber said, "she is a hack with a bad reputation." Save your money. read more

OK...I can't blame this place for my heart attack, but I had my hair cut on a Tuesday morning, went to see my doctor for my annual physical and next thing you know I was in emergency. Two days later I had three stents installed in my blocked artery and came out of the hospital a new man - with an awesome haircut. Angel (the pro who knows how to do a fade) set me up. I will no longer do the Vietnamese salon deal. When was the last time you had a proper hair cut? And they also used foam and a straight blade to shave my sideburns and neck. That's how it's done! When it comes to barber shops, there are three main requirements that make for a PERFECT experience. 1. The intangible "vibe" that can only come with a long standing and "traditional" mens "place." 2. A cut that consists of electric razor work and scissor cutting, with a straight razor finish... to get those super fine hairs, and clean up around the ears and neck. 3. The option to get an old fashioned straight razor shave. (if you've never gotten one, find a barber that does them, and get it at least once.) Now, with those items in mind, Jacki's Barber shop meets and exceeds that standard in everyway. I needed a "real' haircut before a dinner meeting for work, and this was the place that came up. as expected, there were four barbers chairs, and at 9:30AM already a few people getting cuts. Mine went perfectly, starting out with a quick discussion of what I wanted. A good barber wont need to many details, but should be able to tell what you want based on what your hair already looks like. A one minute conversation was all that was needed for me. The haircut itself was a bit longer than expected, but that was due to the requisite amount of BS'ing with my barber, something that is part of the charm of going to a traditional shop like this. As expected, and what I consider mandatory, is that after the actual haircutting, the barber cleaned up my neck and around my ears with a straight razor. Overall, I think I found my new barber, especially since they are around the corner from work. Price was right in line with what I expected at $14, plus a $2 tip. AND ...they even do straight razor shaves. A must for anyone that wants to see how real men used to be treated. There was a time when a man would stop by his barber every other day, to get that professional shave on the way to work. Highly recommend! read more

After various years of going for the "Vietnamese $8 haircut deals" which I absolutly dreaded, I decided enough was enough. So I decided to roll on down and look for a proper Barber Shop. And from that point on, I knew I had found my Barber Shop. Now I've gotten my hair cut from Ed, Arsenio, and Jacki, and I have never walked away disappointed. My personal favorite is Ed because even though he takes a while to cut it, he is very meticulous and ends up doing a superb job every time. I also appreciate how every time I walk in, I get a "Hello guy, been a while! Your brother was here the other day (etc...)" and promptly lets me know what the wait time is (if there is one). My favorite thing about coming here though has to be listening to all the Barbers BS about whatever story of the week is happening. Watching trashy daytime talk shows while I wait and hearing the guys banter back and forth and just overall, have a good time always amplifies the experience. Now you'd think for a good haircut with Barbers who actually remember you, you'd be looking at a $20+ price range but I come away with a steal at only $14. read more

Ever since I've lost most of the hair on my head (not quite 30 yet but been losing hair like mad for years), I've been going to the random $8-12 vietnamese hair salons to get my head shaved. No need to pay high prices for a buzz cut. But I've been toying facial hair and little beards on and off for years and for the last three months I've just let it all grow out. Well...I sure as hell didn't know how to manage all that hair at this point, and the hair salon's I frequent seemed just as clueless. So I figured it was time to track down a proper Old School Barber Shop. Jacki's was the only place with any decent reviews on Yelp, so when I saw the straight razor remark I figured it was worth checking out. I walked out of there with a cleanly shaved head, a well groomed beard, a cleaned up neck line, and nice straight razor job around the ears/neck...All for just $18. I can't recommend this place enough, they all seem to know their stuff, and the atmosphere is great with pictures of Indian motorcycles, and all sorts of classic stuff on the walls. So if you're looking for a proper barber, who knows how to give a clean haircut, take care of a beard, or get a proper straight razor shave in the east bay, this is your place. read more

I've been a regular of another, longstanding barbershop in Newark. Over the last year or so every barber at the "other" shop managed to mangle and screw up my hair beyond my worst nightmares. So after 20 years of going to the "other" barber, I tried Jacki's at the suggestion of a few people. That was the best decision ever. Jacki cut my hair personally a few weeks ago and made was what a terrible cut before look perfect. Today I went back and once again she knocked it out of the park. I am beyond pleased with her professionalism, her laid back attitude and the cozy, family style atmosphere of the shop. If you need a new barber and you are anywhere in the Newark area, you have got to try Jacki's. You will not be sorry. Things to note: * The shop is a little small. I usually take all my kids with me to get my hair cut, but I'm pretty sure I won't be able to do that anymore. * The prices are a little higher than other shops, coming in at $14. Still, for the extra $3 I am getting what I want and not feeling like an ass for wearing a bad cut, so for me it is totally worth it. * Shop hours on Saturday are a little different. She opens at 8:00 AM which I love, but she closes at 2:00 PM, which is a little early for me. Still, I love the shop, so it doesn't matter that much to me. when I walked in everyone was super friendly. I really enjoy the family atmosphere I felt very welcome. Not only it was welcoming but they had some really awesome antique on the walls and their shelves which also makes you feel like you're in the old times. As I was sitting and waiting I noticed a sticker stuck on a tip jar (Invstd) http://www.invstdco.com I knew right away this spot was gonna be good due to one of my close friends business sticker was slapped on that jar. Miguel was my barber and he did an excellent job! matter fact it's time for me to go back since the last time I went was about month ago. I will always go to Miguel since he knows what I'm looking for not only that he does great work. Came here on a Saturday morning. Hair was longer than normal and needed to get chopped nice and short. I have been looking around for a local person in case I could not get to my regular person. I arrived around 845ish in the morning and found parking right in front of the shop. The place of business has parking for several small shops there that at it's busiest will run out but for the most part I drive past the strip mall most of the time and there is parking no matter what time of day. It is a matter of a 10 second vs 45 second walk. So here is what struck me at first. The lady in the front chair cutting hair looked outside and saw me -- and smiled and waved hello. Not a star point but actually a good start for somebody that has never gotten their hair cut there. Walk in -- 2 people cutting hair and 2 people sitting in their chair waiting for people. I got to sit in with Angel who proceeded to greet me, ask me my name and was a super conversationalist during my time. So I told Angel it was my first time and I could only describe my haircut with pictures. I showed him the pictures and he proceeded to start cutting with the clippers. Note -- at the end of my haircut I mentioned my regular person uses scissors a lot and Angel (who used primarily clippers throughout my cut) in fact did cut with scissors if requested. To me - scissors or clippers -- as long as my hair turns out the way I want. By the end of Round 1 where Angel tried to match my haircut, he stopped and gave me the mirror and told me to tell him if more hair was needed to be cut. I gave it good look at told him he could cut the top off shorter and he did. This was the last Round for me. Bingo -- he matched my haircut pretty much to the picture I gave him. Granted I don't have a hard haircut it was nice in the detail he gave it -- clippers, to the smaller clippers, to the brush off of the hair on the forehead, to the hot cream and straight razor shave. Very professional in my opinion. The shop itself reminds me of an old time barber shop -- plenty of stuff to look at, mementos, 49ers mementos, old style posters, magazines. It is what I call a "Barber Shop" and not a "Hair Styling Shop". Last note to give -- when I came in -- no wait. By the time I left -- about 30-40 minutes later, Angel had 3 customers waiting for him. Of the hair techs there -- 3 of 4 -- were all busy with the 1 guy waiting for walk in's. Seating is about 7-10 deep with plenty to do or look at. Would I come back -- yep I would. I would give Angel my business again. Price is about what I expect with the tip. Try it at least once -- just go in the morning when it is slow otherwise plan on a wait for the next open seat. read more

I asked for a low taper but the older lady at the first chair went too high over my ear with the zero only on one side of my head. The other side came out nice but unfortunately I asked her to at least make it match the messed up side. I've already heard people talking about my taper. They said, "what kinda cut is that, a taper? I should get that next time." I think they were being sarcastic. I need to start going with appointment based barbers that know how a taper is supposed to look. The other barbers at this location are no better because they allow her to continue to ruin people's hair and week, possibly month. Depending on how fast your hair grows back. My father-in-law is 86 and at the age where he doesn't remember or doesn't get around to getting a haircut and those types of things. He had increasingly started to take on that Albert Einstein look and we needed get his 'do done. I figured that at his age, he wasn't going to "do" a salon, so a good old barber shop was the solution. Looking at Yelp, I read a review for Jacks Barber Shop in Newark and was intrigued about the straight razor shaves. It was close to my house, so I dropped by to conduct some recon. Things looked good. Old-style barber chair, very reasonable prices, and a staff that seemed eager to assist, but not bubbly. At 86, you don't do bubbly. Of course, the proof is in the haircut and shave. The following day, I dropped in with my father-in-law in tow. Before he could figure out what was going on (a haircut intervention), he had a hot towel wrapped around his melon and a straight razor pressed against his throat. No longer a good time to object, he relaxed into the chair and welcomed the hot foam, close perfect shave and the face massage that almost put him to sleep. The woman barber (only one) in the shop does the shave and a haircut. All the others just do haircuts. Also, just to make things difficult for her, my father-in-law had the hiccups. We noticed she was timing her strokes to his hiccups. Her work was meticulous and the shave superb. Following the shave, it was time for the hair cut. The density of my father-in-law's hair is thinning, so like many people, he wants to keep it long so it looks like a full head of hair. We told the barber this and she started working her craft. The cut neatened him up without giving him the bald-diny. He was happy and we were thrilled. Things turned out great. I tipped her well and thanked her for her help. It might be another year before my father-in-law gets around to having a haircut again, but when it's time, we will head to Jack's. Great experience, great results and a fair price. read more

If there was an option to put 0 stars i would. First of all it took about 1 hour of waiting before i was able to get my haircut. Even people who came before me went ahead but i am a very quiet person so i didnt react. When i got my haircut, i told the barber to cut the sides short and top keep it long but she immediately went to work on the top when i specifically tols her dont touch the top. The fade was horrible and it was uneven. Please spend the extra 5 dollars going to a quality barber rather then going to this washed out place. Even the inside of this barbershop had dust all over the furniture and it felt cramped because of such tight space. read more

I found this place after moving to Fremont and needing a solid barber. I really enjoy coming here since the cuts are always good and I get great conversation from Jacki, who usually does my cuts. We both have daughters so there is never a lack of subject matter! LOL Seriously though, Jacki always make sure that I look my best when I leave. And if there is a special event, she puts in a little extra effort to clean me up and make presentable. It's those little things that keep me coming back. A little extra can go a long way. Jacki has been cutting my hair for a few years now. One thing I like about Jacki's is this: After a while, the barbers know who you prefer to cut your hair...so you walk in, and they know you are a usual client that they have seen and talk to - but they know you are not "Their client"...there is hardly ever much of a wait at all though. All of their work is great...if you want to get in and out in a hurry - Jacki can do it, and do it right...if you wanna spend a while to get a tight fade, take your time, B,S, a bit, then they all do great work! read more
