Called an made an appointment for a consultation with Jack for a Family Trust Package. A phone appointment was made and I received confirmation of the appointment with a "consultation questionnaire" that his office requested I fill out PRIOR to our meeting. The questionnaire wanted way too much personal information for a simple consultation. I hadn't hired him yet. I just wanted information on his trust package services and ballpark pricing. This questionnaire wanted bank account numbers, names and birthdates of everyone in my family, brokerage account numbers, stock share numbers and values of all assets etc. Needless to say I didn't fill it out but still wanted basic information about his services. We get on the call and he starts going down the list of questions from the questionnaire to fill it out himself. I realize what is happening (he's going to ask me every question on the questionnaire since I hadn't filled it out) and interrupt him as he's trying to collect my children's names and birthdates. I ask why he needs all this detailed personal information for a simple consultation. I haven't decided to work with him yet! He annoyingly responds "okay then what are your questions?" At that point I realize I don't trust this man to handle something as important as a Living Trust for my family and tell him it's not going to work out and hang up. I understand that they need some information regarding my assets to give me pricing but why do they need account numbers and names of children and dates of birth so early in the process? The answer is, they don't! I've had a few consultations with other attorneys regarding a living Trust and none have required I give them more than my name and basic information about my assets. There are plenty of Estate Planning Attorney's in SoCal, I'd stay away from this one. read more

Earlier this year our prior trust attorney retired but referred my parents and I to someone who didn't answer calls or reply to emails. While all that was happening my dad and I had to make very big changes to our trust documents. We both needed someone who is professional and keeps up with changes in state and federal laws. That's when we went to Jack Stephens and can both say he and his associates are the best. It was just this year, 2021, I learned about federal laws enacted in 2016 with respect to people like me who need a Special Needs Trust (SNT). For perspective, my prior SNT was done in 2001. That's 20 years ago! At our consultation meeting Jack helped my dad & I understand why it was in my best interest to stick to a third person SNT rather than first person SNT. Soon after I read the draft his team made I saw it included provisions the 2001 edition didn't have to help protect me when both my parents are gone. A month later I realized I didn't have an advance medical directive while a cousin who became gravely ill at the same time has no such advanced directive ready. I asked staff about adding an advanced directive to my revised SNT. Soon after got an estimate I was comfortable with and they gave me a draft I am very happy with. We recently had the documents signed and notarized but credit to Jack himself for helping us better know what my dad can do for me and reduce risk of future problems with the Social Security Administration. To disabled adults like myself or families with a disabled child who have to either revise their current SNT or create one from scratch I highly recommend Stephens Law Group. read more

My wife lost her mother 6 weeks ago and her mother left a couple bank accounts and a couple 401k's, a small amount. The estate fits well within the guidelines of a California Small Estate and we know the probate process is not necessary. We still had some basic questions and were willing to pay to have those questions answered, so we called The Jack E Stephens office based on it's Yelp reviews. The initial phone call was with a very pleasant individual, who made an appointment for us to pay for a 1 hour consultation. We did not care about the hourly fee, we just wanted a couple questions answered. She then called back about 30 minutes later and said that Mr. Stephens would call us to answer our questions, no need to come in. She went on to say that it would be free...... Okay, that's fine but our goal was to sit down and pay a professional for their professional opinion. Several hours later my wife recieved another phone call from a different woman (I'm guessing the office manager.) This person was less nice, and told my wife she needed to come in and pay the fee for the one hour as well as pay a retainer. My wife told her that she only wanted to sit down with him for an hour to get his professional advice and was happy to pay, but wasn't going to pay a retainer. My wife went on to say that if they don't provide that service (which the first person told her they did,) we were happy to look elsewhere. In a nasty tone, this person (office manager) then said that my wife NEEDED to hire an attorney (which is completely untrue,) and that being an executor comes with responsibilities (we are both professionals and don't need to be talked down to about responsibilities,) and that by not hiring Mr. Stephens she is being irresponsible. Conversation over. There was so much wrong with that phone call. This person was mean-natured, condescending, and her facts were completely wrong. She assumed she was talking to someone who she could bully into what she wanted. This behavior.... aimed at someone who had just lost her mother and is barely keeping herself together to get through each day. My wife brushed it off, made another call to another attorney with equally great Yelp reviews, happily paid her $375 for an hour with this professional, and we are well on our way. I could not brush this off as my wife did. This was a terrible way to treat people. read more
