We've been here quite a few times, and one thing that always stands out is the consistency in service--especially from the cocktail servers. No matter how busy it gets, we've never had an issue getting checked on. On our most recent visit, we had the pleasure of meeting Denise, who was not only friendly and personable but also incredibly efficient. She made her rounds quickly without ever making us feel rushed, and her positive attitude really added to the overall experience. It's worth noting that the cocktail servers here cover a pretty large area, which isn't easy, especially during peak times. Despite that, they manage to stay attentive, organized, and on top of their game. It takes a lot to maintain that level of service, and it definitely doesn't go unnoticed. Always appreciate the hard work--it's a big part of why we keep coming back! read more

My wife and I got a great deal on a room here for a couple nights (staycation). They're still in the midst of their transformation from the former Sands hotel, but I think enough of it was finished for us to come to an opinion. The room was decent. Despite recently going through a refurb it still felt old, tired, and already in need of a refresh. The bed was comfortable and clean, but you could clearly tell that dusting wasn't a priority for the cleaning staff. Also, the coffee maker was filthy. Furthering my refusal of using hotel-provided coffee makers. Water pressure and temperature out of the shower head was great, though. That's always a plus. The property is coming along nicely, though there's still plenty to do. I love the addition of several art pieces scattered about the lobby. The Neon Line, an urban trail of sorts, displays numerous art installations once featured at the Burning Man festival. Food options are actually quite decent, borderline good. Hanna's Table is good for quick sit down bite. For a nicer meal, you can't go wrong with signature steakhouse, J Paul's. While not the greatest steakhouse in town (that honor goes to Atlantis, in my opinion) it's still a solid option. We didn't try their buffet but I have heard a few good things. Overall, we had a good time at J Resort. They still need to finish the refresh on their pool as well as the addition of another restaurant and bar, but there isn't enough construction going on that would interfere with your stay. I'd definitely come back once they're all done. read more

First things first, The Sands needed a major remodel and change of identity. The Jacobs family has succeeded at that. The property now looks and feels upscale and much, much, much cleaner. The place is fresh. I guess when a casino owner buys up the virtually the entire corridor between their casinos they can also convert a city street to Valet Parking. 3rd Street was free parking and still close enough to walk to downtown events but is now reserved for casino use only. I have not see the remodeled rooms but I am guessing they are inline with the rest of the casino, So far I have only been to Hanna's table and it was early on. I am looking forward to trying J Paul's but not too sure about the mixed reviews on the buffet. A thanks to the Jacobs family for cleaning up downtown in a similar fashion to the Oliver McMillan proposal of 1998. Not every decision has been met with open arms, but growing comes with pains. The rooms were a highlight they were very clean, spacious, and comfortable. Everything felt well kept, and it made it easy to relax and enjoy our time there. The location is key walkable to everything . The casino was fun, but I do wish they had more game tables open, especially since it was a Friday. It felt a little limited for a busy night, which was a bit of a downside. Aside from that, the overall experience was good. The hotel itself is nice, and the rooms definitely stood out the most. Just over all booking was a nightmare they said they needed a card to hold room which was fine but then 3 weeks before we even got there they charged our card and we questioned it they said no cash refunds but we weren't happy with the way they explained the card was only to hold room not to be charged so we cancel reservation and then were told no cash refunds only vouchers which we didn't approve in the first place. We have never had issues in the past at this Hotel but whatever reservation company they are using has poor customer service and will cost them our business. Beware don't give them a card to hold a room because you will not get money back even if you pay security deposit which doesn't get your money back. read more

This used to be the old Sands Casino and Hotel but changed hands a few years ago and is now called J Resort after its owner. It's located about 1 block from Casino Row and The Eldorado. I understand it is going thru a remodeling that will expand its casino area. This review is only for my 2 night stay this week. Parking and check in was easy and friendly. My room on the 7th floor was very nice and comfortable. Waiting for an elevator was always less than 15 seconds. I have no complaints and feel lucky to have stayed here especially with my reasonable $ rate. There are 2 guest room towers. I would definitely recommend staying here. There are plenty of slot/video games in the casino but not many table games. I was told that the expansion will add more. read more

Horrible! I stay in King Tower 15/F. Unclean carpet. People's dead skin found. AC is super noisy like airplanes engine. Toilet still have poop mark. Toilet seat cover wobbling and shifting down into toilet hole. House keeping service upon request due to unforseen situation. Even I requested, they only come empty trash and provide new towels. After my visit last year I had some great offers from the J. The comps are generous and the lady at the cage couldn't have been friendlier or more helpful. A great vibe all around and that makes a difference! Food at Hannahs and some free $ to gamble. I was happy to come back and check things out and I'm so glad that I did. They had moved some things around and are continuing to work on improving the J. I was so happy to see my favorite dealer of all time Christina! She is a great dealer and an amazing person. Had one dealer that kept calling me bro which I didn't much appreciate but just made me appreciate Christina all the more. Great table games with good table rules! I was able to check out Hannah's for a sandwich. Great service and the food was awesome. I would definitely go back. For years the Sands was our go to and I was a bit hesitant with it changing to J's. I have to say I now find myself excited about the direction it is going. Every time I'm in Reno I will be sure to make some stops for gaming and food at J's. Still working on maybe staying there next time we visit. Good little hotel in Reno. The front staff was helpful and made check in easy. The casino is small but that's fine. The drinks at the steakhouse are amazing! Hannah's table wasn't bad at all. Service was a bit shaky but food was good and drinks were good. My biggest issue is when casinos try and be part smoking and part non smoking. It doesn't work! Smoke travels and screws the people up who aren't smokers and do not like smoke. I think they should choose who they want to be and go with it. Non smoking would be amazing. Look at the Park MGM in Vegas. Always full and an amazing place. They could differentiate themselves. Looks like Reno is attempting to be a little more upscale and more of a destination. This would be awesome for kids and families. But that's just opinion. Pick one or the other and go with it. It will be great either way. read more

If you get a chance, definitely and I indefinitely try Hannah's restaurant at Jay's casino. Our waiter I believe his name was. Danny was very nice, very polite. Our food was served promptly and the portion size and quality were surprising and amazing. We had the artichoke spinach dip as an appetizer, and oh my goodness that right there would have been enough. It was brought to our table, piping hot and it not only had tortilla chips. It's also served with these twisted breadsticks that are full of cheese! So very yummy. We ended up splitting the fish and chips, which was more than enough for two people, and the fish was crispy and not greasy and I don't know how they make their tartar sauce, but it was yummy. It was also nice that I'm assuming he was the manager supervisor. Andrew was very friendly, attentive and dressed appropriately and was just a very very nice guy that took the time to invite us back. I do have a comped room there sometime in February that I am having difficulty in booking the room myself through their website, but when I do manage to do this, I will let you know how the hotel side of my offers go. read more

So the wife went to check out the J Resort. This was our first time here since it became J Resort. We checked in and staff were super friendly. Vincent, that guy that checked the us in was amazing.. thank you Vincent! Our room was so nice they have really updated the Resort. We changed and went to the pool. It's was outside just past the parking garage. Good size pool and clean. The staff is so friendly and helpful. I would definitely stay here again! I would say this place is great and reminds me a little bit of fountain bleu Las Vegas . Restaurant is amazing. Food is good and the service is great. The only negative I will say is the gaming. Gaming seemed fairly small and quiet compared to the places in The Row and others. The Pitt was relocated plus it felt much more slower than others. Many of the table games were closed but the $10 minimums were a big plus. Slot machine on the other hand felt tight. Whether you went low denomination or "low rolling l" or went high limit. I did not have any luck or won at any of the "high and low volatile" games. I'd give Food 5/5 Hotel 5/5 Service 3/5 since the dealers and floor personal give you the info you need when you ask. Gaming 2/5 just because for table games I broke even and play was fairly good but many of the table games I would've liked to play were closed (craps and roulette). Slots were volatile, many of the games you'd think pay out don't. Brought a $1000 bankroll and won -$0 zip Sadly. read more

Check in was smooth, the woman at the front desk was polite and friendly, gave us plenty of advice on what was going on for the night. The room was very clean, smelled fresh and very roomy. We stayed in the skyline suites in the top floor of the ceder tower. The elevator was nice and felt safe both physically and security wise. The floor plan doesn't feel like you are walking 10 miles in a circle like other casinos... I gambled for about 2 hours and had not seen a cocktail waitress or been approached by any team member. That was very strange. Overall a pretty decent trip. I like this hotel/casino more than the GSR, and the nugget. It's a more low key less hustle bustle type casino, but you still gotta get me some drinks at the machines! I appreciate non smoking sections. The resurant J Paul's Italian Steak house was the highlight, and would recommend checking the resort out to anyone now that I've been there. read more

Last time I stayed on this property was over 20 years ago back when it was The Sands Hotel and Casino. Back then it was $29 a night without any resort fees. Fast forward to today, the property is now the J Resort. Now the resort fees alone is over $30 a day. The rate for each night varies depending on events in Reno as well as if it's a weekday or weekend. Rooms: the rooms are large. The WiFi works well most of the time. The air conditioning works but is very loud, so if you are a light sleeper it will be a problem. The shower and bathrooms are large, clean, and work well. The bed is soft, pillows a little too hard for my liking. Large LCD tvs in the room with basic cable channels. Not much to complain about. Overall a decent place to sleep. The casino on the ground floor has tons of slot machines. A few tables to play at. Three places to eat, an Italian Steakhouse, Hannah's Cafe, as well as a dinner buffet called The Buffet. Only one I tried was The Buffet and I thought it was decent. The employees at the buffet were extremely helpful and friendly. There is a ton of self parking available. I overheard people talking that the security at this property harassed quite a few people based on their attire etc but of course I didn't experience that myself. Would I stay again? Probably. Overall a decent casino hotel and good value for money. I stayed here twice, a couple of nights each, in different towers. There wasn't anything bad about this hotel. I gave 3 stars mainly because it was a lot of little things adding up. For example, the choice of lobby and hallway carpets made it harder to move my roller luggage. Anyway, all of the issues I'm about to discuss were minor, and I would likely stay here again for the right price. Room: The light near the door didn't work. That said, the A/C worked well, the beds were comfortable, and the towels were fluffy. The room has a modern design and is spacious. Comes with desk. Electrical outlets in convenient places. All my rooms came with a small frig. Service: When I requested a refresh of my towels, I got back to my hotel room later to see a stack of towels in the hallway on the floor against my door. I didn't use the bottom-most towel because it had been on the floor. Also, the first set of towels that the room came with did not have a shower mat (but the delivered set did). Check in/Check out: I got emails about checking in without talking to a desk clerk, but the actual kiosks at reception seem to be covered over and unavailable? Not sure what's going on there. Bathroom: Glass shower doors were misaligned/overlapped by a quarter inch and wouldn't close properly. In addition, I ran out of toilet paper and there was no extra roll already placed in the bathroom. Other than that, a clean and spacious bathroom with modern decor. They were understaffed at Hanna's Table (the main diner/restaurant), which meant 5+ minutes just to get seated despite it being 10% full. Service and kitchen were slow. Fitness center is small and located on 16th Floor of the Aspen Tower. No signage directing you. Some basic equipment. Gambling: Mostly slots and minimal table games. There's a modest Sports Book section. A couple of bars in the casino area. read more

There were fleas in the bedroom. We got bit everywhere all night when we stayed there. We didn't notice until the next day. We left a note on the counter that they needed to take care of pests in the room. Our room was on the 10th floor room 1032 around February 2026. We looked everywhere in the bed and seemed clean but they came out at night when we fell asleep. Not sure if all the rooms have pests but please beware of this. read more

This Casino was once upon a time the Sand's. I hadn't been here since it changed hands. The casino floor is large with a variety of slots, poker slots, and gaming tables. They have a variety of promotions to get gamblers into the casino. In fact, Gold Dust West here in Reno and Carson City are combined with this casino. Staff is friendly and there is an abundance of cocktail waitstaff. The Casino is clean. I especially like the original Modern from the '30s and 40's, Abstract Expressionism from the '50s and 60's, Pop Art from the '70s and 80's, along with American West art, including contemporary and emerging artists. All of the artists shown have works in major collections. Just the art alone should make it on the to-visit list of anyone visiting the Reno area. They have three restaurants a small coffee kiosk and offer live entertainment with a summer concert series that is located outside. read more

The J Resort, I think, used to be the sands. Some of the things that I appreciate about this hotel and the parking is free and the pool seems to be open later than a lot of others in Vegas. I keep trying to remind myself that we know the biggest city there is and that it is trying to be Las Vegas, it will definitely fall short. Upon, I was pretty impressed with the room. A lot of the fixtures and things were brand new and modern. Unfortunately, there is a pretty large, unsightly stain in our shower. I guess nobody could get rid of. I don't know what it is. A few times now I have called to ask the staff and technicians and housekeeping to come and try and eliminate that stain. It is not only unsightly, I don't know what it is from and I don't need my family to be exposed to anything disgusting. No matter how many times I've called and asked nobody has been able to get rid of it or make it any better. So there has been no offer to change our room. Yesterday we went to the pool. Unfortunately, because of the winds, I guess there were not a lot of people there and several chairs and things have been overturned. The thing that I did not like at all is that the swimming pool area is not supervised by anybody. I'm not talking about having a lifeguard present, but I am talking about having anybody there to communicate with the main hotel about the availability of clean towels , a clean restroom, and other necessities like that. I had to call three times yesterday to request the towels be replenished and the old disgusting used ones that had been left there be removed. There were huge mounds of used towels. Some of them, we had to pull out of the hot tub and pool because they've flown in there. They were just there, soaking up water. Another thing that the property manager needs to be sure is that their phone that is located at the pool in working condition. I tried using that phone several times yesterday to try and contact the hotel or main desk, somebody. The phone nearest the pool deck apparently is out of order. It does not work at all. If there is an emergency and someone doesn't have a cell phone on them or whatever, they could end up being in very big trouble That is not safe. read more

Big question is would I stay here again?! This is only based on the night I stayed here 7/19/25. Parking, 1 star: They don't have valet to start. There was an event next to the resort, not part of the J. Everyone for the event was using the J's self parking lots & structure. No security preventing it from happening. I called the hotel and asked what they suggest.. the response was just keep trying, sorry. We finally found one. Hotel room, 3 stars: Bed very comfortable, room was clean, there was an almost full size fridge/freezer and a microwave. The a/c.. loud AF. The room was more motel than hotel, but it did its job. The steak house, 5 stars: There was a $50 print out in the kiosk to use and it works with your comps. There was NO waiting on a Saturday night so we went. The meal was covered with comps n the $50 offer. Steak & shrimp scampi (land & sea $59) and the steak special $49 2 sodas ($4ea) and calamari appetizer ($16). Food and service both good. Casino, 5 stars: They give great comps w the players card. We had only stopped on the way out of Reno a year ago n played but the offers started coming in right away for free rooms, free play n food. One of the best casinos for comps I've seen in awhile. The machines were paying too. Hanna's Table, 2 stars: Take out for steak and eggs and a cheeseburger. The food was ok. Service was not good. And for take out not providing utensils is a joke. The coffee spot next to Hanna's table, 5 stars: quick and friendly service. The biscuit bfast sandwich is good, I feel like it's a fresh sandwich. I didn't ask but it's very good. They use Starbucks coffee. So.. would I stay again? Yes. It's within walking distance to el dorado/silver legacy. I'd stay in a suite n hope the a/c is better quality. Maybe check dates of the festivals next door before going. read more

Newly renovated and clean. Stayed over for a night with the family and we had a great experience. Sign up for the players card for free and you'll get discounts on dinner and more. The Row (with Circus Circus) was only a short 5 minute walk away. The streets are a lot cleaner than what I remember. No issues with the room, it was clean and nice. We were really impressed with J Resort. The rooms were very clean and modern with a very small kitchenette (sink, refrigerator, microwave). The staff were friendly and accommodating. J-Paul Italian steakhouse was impressive with high end food, cocktails and knowledgeable staff . Heidi's Table had an extensive, affordable breakfast menu and again , friendly staff . The pool is on the small side but does have potential. There are some lounge chairs but there could be more. They also need to put umbrellas for shade , there is zero umbrellas and zero shade out there . I saw speakers but there was never any music playing. The young girl working the snack was extremely upbeat and friendly. Turning on some music and placing shade umbrellas would be an easy upgrade to take the pool experience to the next level . I am so happy for this amped up downtown gambling property! It is is still very new and has some kinks to iron out and complete, but overall, a clean and emerging property. There are a couple of restaurants at my moment. My hotel room was clean but needed some adjustments. Maintenance was able to adjust all of them. I enjoyed seeing the trains roll by. The air conditioning was soothing, too. Gambling was decent, too. A couple of good bars with bars that have beer taps. Lots of parking. Front, back and tower parking. Wanted to try Hanna's Table, a nice coffee shop in the hotel casino. The large billboard just down Arlington Ave. stated: Reno residents receive 25% off each meal at the J. On that basis we obtained a new gaming card from the automated machine, to be sure it was up to date, and sat down at Hanna's table. I ordered Fish and Chips and had a side of fresh fruit. My senior companion ordered the prime rib and it was great. The breading and flavor of the fish and chips were wonderful, crisp and tasty. The fresh fruit was spectacular, large strawberries, large raspberries and large blackberries were included. The best i have ever had in a restaurant. Then the bill came. I showed my gaming card and asked why there was not a 25% discount for local residents. The waitress said we needed a coupon which could be found at the casino cashier's cage. I use a cane and am 83 years old. I was not walking several hundred yards back to get the coupon and then back to the restaurant to present it to the server. No where were there instructions about the need for the 25% coupon, until I got my dining bill. I was discusted and will not return inspite of the great food. read more

Manager Anthony was not helpful at deescalating issues. They advertised they have a free Fathers' Day buffet but it was closed at 8pm. Pretty much said eat somewhere else and did not care about keeping us as patrons in their establishments. Poorly showed any empathy and our family will never be back.
