We recently went out of town and decided not to worry about asking someone to put our trash out for us.

Since my building does not offer recycling services (we're still in the South and way behind the…read morecurve sometimes), I have to either hire someone or haul it myself. I prefer this center since it's somewhat of a nice drive, fairly easy to access, open 24/7/365(6), and located directly next to a park if I want some green space time, too, thereby making my trip efficient. It's usually cleanish, but in my last few visits the place looks more like a dumping ground; specifically the cardboard bins. They are stuffed and overflowing to the point where folks just pile their cardboard on the ground next to the containers. (Unless it's me who wants to find every tiny space in the bins to shove the cardboard into.) Perhaps this is due to the increase in ship-to-home? Regardless, it's a problem that I've not yet seen a resolution to. I've actually been delaying hauling my recyclables knowing that the holidays have likely only added to the frustration of bin availability. Since this center is located in the back corner of the lot for McGavock High School, there is ample parking for unloading recyclables. However, turning into the lot from the road can be a bit tight. It's just a weird turn for some odd reason. Also, when the buses are running for the school year, keep an eye out for them as they will come flying into this lot for overnight parking. Since I last took photos, there are updated signs to instruct what can and cannot be placed into the bins. I recently noticed on the Nashville.gov website that the recyclables list has changed. I was sad to learn that some of the plastic containers that are 100% recyclable the city can no longer take only because they do not have a buyer for those specific items. I also learned some of my paper pieces were too small, so now when I scrub my mail I make sure to take care to leave the paper in larger pieces so they're recyclable. Anyway, the list is very well assembled and incredibly detailed. What's the point in recycling if we don't do it correctly? Go check it out.

Not to mention, if you live in an apartment, you most likely don't have access to a recycle bin that you can roll out to the curb every two weeks. However, spaces like the East Convenience Center are working hard to make recycling easier. After the holidays, I had a mountain of cardboard, along with various other recyclables (plastic, metal, glass ... all of the things). This center is free to use once per day for Davidson County residents - you just pull up during operating hours and hand over your ID to prove your residency. The folks at the booth are friendly as can be, and they've been happy to answer any questions I had, especially on my first visit. I have yet to encounter a long wait to drop off my materials, but I've heard Saturdays can get a little busy. Pro tip - pre-sort your recyclables beforehand to keep your visit quick. Glass, plastic, metal, and paper (excluding cardboard) are all located in easy-to-access bins. If you pull further into the center, there's a separate section for cardboard. The East Convenience Center does allow other types of waste disposal ... you'll want to reference their website for specifics (and it might have a cost associated with it, depending on what it is you're dumping). I'm thankful to have this easy-to-use recycling center so close to my home ... and can't wait to see the city continue to expand and improve spaces like this.

We had a bunch of e-waste, we'd worked with the company before when it was known as Ecycler-USA or similar. It showed up in May. We asked for pickup in May for the 26th of 2021 - it was full. So, I get two calls and an email to verify that they'll pick up. I get an email on the 26th of May saying they had a driver issue and couldn't get a driver. No big. June 3rd 2021, after another call or two and an email I get a note they'll be there on the 4th and to be ready... oh I'm ready. Note here - I did not log the calls, the emails are all I have straight up proof on. The month goes by, nobody shows, I contact them via email again. I honestly thought the whole thing had been taken but nope. Late July I get in touch with Garry, the new manager at Scott Recycling who this was the first he's heard about anything. We're finally scheduled by these people for a pickup of July 23rd. That comes and goes, they call a couple of times before to verify someone will be here... yeah - phone call or two and let's skip ahead to November of 2021 - 181 days have passed, I didn't actually log the phone calls and at one point I had assumed in July they picked up the bin as one of my coworkers had said it'd been picked up. Nope. November 3rd I get an email back from Jessica who apologizes and says it'll be taken care of. Nope. 12-20-2021 208 days of that box being in the elements they get a truck out there after I call. Bam, truck shows, I get a call from dispatch that they will not take it claiming there's trash in the bin. I run down there to see what they're talking about and the trash is, for the most part, the bin itself. It was carboard, exposed to the elements for 208 days. The drivers tell me they will not take that box. I ask if we can put the stuff in another box, they say yes but they're not touching the box on our property or the pallet they left. There were 3 water bottles and an instruction manual someone had chucked in there - that was the extent of the trash. I removed it. I don't know who put it in because I didn't guard the box for 208 days. I got a coworker to help me transfer the stuff to their new box and roughly halfway through moving it I am told to stop because they won't take any wet electronic stuff. The box has been sitting outside waiting for pickup since May. 7 months. It's all soaked. Everything is wet, any computer at this point was wet. I'm more irate than I should be to employees of their company who are just doing what their dispatch asks, I apologize to the people who were there in writing. I apologized in person, told them I'd take it up with the BBB. Scott Recycling has abandoned a pallet, and a soaked carboard box of e-waste we collected and set out for them. Due to their not picking it up any of the times they've said they would, said e-junk and box has been soaked and the batteries that are in there have probably contaminated the ground around it. That's about that. I have emails, photographs, don't have the phone call records, but pretty much all of this is well documented. Even if they don't take the e-waste we've collected for them, we're now on the hook to throw away their box and pallet.
