The Deets: My barber I go to in downtown Raleigh transferred business over to the new The Nut Barbershop so I went over this past weekend for a head shave/beard trim. This shop has a lot going in and still evolving as it has just opened up, so it's a still a work in progress. You can get the feeling looking at the pics that it has a blend of the old fashioned and old school with some modern style. I like the old fashioned detail placed into the workstations, with antique barber chairs to go with them. The stark lines of the painted walls are broken up with a well placed piece of wood with curves to the edges, bringing a more natural tone out. A welcoming sitting area in back with a TV is available, giving the sort of vibe the shop actually lean towards...a kind of hangout for customers as well as a pure barbershop. An open outside area out the back door is good for a game of darts while enjoying a cigar (I am told a dartboard to come soon), for example. I like this vibe a lot and think this type of atmosphere is going to set The Nut Barbershop apart from other venues around. But one of the main reasons this shop gets five stars is my barber Ryan, as his attention to detail and barber skills are wonderful. The shop is set up for payments with cash, cards, and Apple/Android Pay with Square. Bonus is that you can make appointments online at the www.thenutbarbershop.com website. Note: The Friday open hours 11am-7pm are set up for walk-ins only, the rest of the operating hours are by appointment only (at the time of this writing, per website). All in all, The Nut Barbershop is shaping up to be a great new place to get a trim in DTR! They get all the stars.

It gave the impression of a place with good vibes and professionalism, which made us feel comfortable booking. Unfortunately, that positive first impression did not carry through during the actual visit. My husband's barber, Matt, had extremely poor bedside manner. He came across as unpleasant, dismissive, and overly cocky, which made the entire experience uncomfortable from start to finish. When you're paying for a service, the baseline expectation is at least a professional and courteous attitude, and that was completely lacking here. It felt unprofessional and unnecessary. On top of that, the haircut itself wasn't even good -- it was actually pretty crappy, which made the poor attitude even harder to overlook. I was familiar with the area but had never been here before. I decided to be adventurous and give it a shot. The parking lot was packed so I parked in the far back with lots of spaces available! The moment I walked into the barber shop, it felt like a party. The noise level was like a party with music playing, barbers and customers having an awesome time. Great vibe once you settle in! I was asked if I was doing a walk-in and they assigned me to a barber immediately. George was my barber and he did an awesome job. He didn't rush and was very detailed. For $30-40, it's totally worth it. They took care of me and I appreciate the hospitality.
