I reviewed Dr. Boyd a few years ago for DIEP breast reconstruction he performed upon me. Due to another patient's misfortune with another surgeon, I have learned more about another complication I suffered while Dr. Boyd was operating on me. After my surgery, Dr. Boyd was checking on me and I looked down at my chest and startled when I saw something black on my skin. Dr. Boyd said "Oh that's where we burned you with the Bovie. We had to excise some burned tissue and suture the incision." Adjacent to the the black sutures, there were several small blisters on my chest. I suffered several complications as you can read in my previous review, but I have just been reading about Bovie cautery tool burns tonight and found this response to another patient who woke up with a burn on her chest: "I work in surgery and the few bovie burns I've been privy to have been caused by plain old carelessness. The bovie machine has a built in alarm that buzzes while in use, however, that alarm can be turned down or even muted. Bovie pencil is supposed to be placed in plastic holster when not in use. Burns I've seen have usually been caused when bovie is not placed in holster and a careless staff member leans on it or places an arm while holding retraction and button is pressed. It's a big deal! Sentinel event is what hospitals call it. Should have been reported immediately to surgeons, administration, and most importantly, the patient." I did go to Little Company of Mary Hospital's medical chief about the issues of my head not being turned during the 14 hour surgery, and the sequential compression devices never being placed on my legs until late the next day after surgery and only upon my sister's insistence, but didn't know enough about the Bovie burns at that time to report them. I should have sued Dr. Boyd for malpractice for the burns and all of the other needless complications I suffered at his hands. The burn that was sutured did leave a visible scar on my chest. read more

I am beyond floored with the lack of professionalism from Dr. Boyd. A little less than a year ago, I recieved a breast reduction and lipo with no issues. However due to the lipo, excess skin formed on the line of my armpit. Because it was from the lipo, Dr. Boyd said he would fix it free of charge. I just went in today for that procedure. I got prepped with no problem. He then began injecting the numbing solution, which burned and hurt. I asked to slow down with the injections, which he did reluctantly. Due to the injections still hurting, I asked for the freezing solution to ease the pain of the injections, which the staff went to get. Dr. Boyd then stated (after injecting me 4 times) that he didn't think I would be the right candidate for the local anesthesia procedure. The staff asked to continue with the injections. I received another injection which I showed pain from. At that moment, he stated "I'm not going to continue this procedure today. You can come back for general anesthesia, but it will cost you more," and walked out of the room. He didn't return. He didn't speak with me. Nothing. The staff was shocked. This is the second day I've had to take off from work as a teacher.... Only for him to put me through pain then say that I'm not a good candidate for this and walk off. The ladies that work in the office are amazing and very personable. Dr. Boyd, however, seems to need some assistance with professionalism. Needless to say, I do not recommend this doctor and will not be coming back for any other procedures. read more

I am extremely pleased with the "neck lift" that Dr. Boyd performed on me in June 2015. At 67-years of age, I was unhappy with the wrinkles and the vertical--and very visible--"cords" in my neck. Around this time, my daughter found Dr. Boyd to repair her nose from a prior auto accident and do a revision on her breasts. I was impressed with my daughter's results, and I made an appointment for a consultation. Of course, I checked out his credentials and found that he is a professor of surgery at UCLA medical school, chief of plastic surgery at HARBOR-UCLA medical center, and holds memberships in more than a dozen societies in the USA, Canada, and England. After reading his biography and viewing his published textbook, I knew at that point I wanted him to perform the neck lift. The procedure took place in a surgical center in the South Bay, not far from my home. The surgery went well and without complications, and I was released by noon the same day. Of course, the initial healing took about ten days, but I was quite surprised at the small amount of bruising. He saw me on multiple occasions after the surgery to make sure the healing was progressing normally, and I received excellent post-operative care. It has now been about two months since the surgery, and I can hardly find the scars. I am very happy with my profile and jawline. My entire lower face looks soft and natural--without looking "pulled" or stretched. I am thrilled with my new neck, and I would highly recommend Dr. J. Brian Boyd. read more

I was referred in late November, 2016 to Dr. J. Brian Boyd by my dermatologist, Dr. Salar Hazany in Naples, (Long Beach) California for a medical surgical procedure where "time was of the essence" and involved surgery of a very precise and delicate nature to my upper cheek/lower eyelid. From the start, Dr. Boyd's staff called me almost immediately to get me booked in for my initial assessment. Doing my research (I work as a television journalist, my wife is a registered nurse...so we checked him out thoroughly) I discovered that Dr. Boyd came HIGHLY regarded. Two surgeries took place over the holidays of 2016, with strict follow-ups and therapy to carefully observe the healing process. A consummate professional and perfectionist (not to mention - a very, very pleasant man), Dr. Boyd takes the time - every time...to properly diagnose issues through detailed assessment and surgery options. Every question gets answered, concerns thoroughly addressed and the surgery with post-op follow-up therapy is met with a gentle and personal 'bedside manner.' Ten years ago Dr Boyd performed an SGap procedure for breast cancer on my left breast. He is a perfectionist and saw that I had superb care. An implant was put under the muscle of my right breast to match the fat transfer. Dr. Boyd made me whole again! What a wonderful caring human being, but one must take note to his extraordinary ability to reconstruct. I sought out Dr. Boyd after seeing a couple surgeons which my insurance company had recommended. I knew right away that Dr. Boyd was the surgeon who would be performing my procedure as he made me feel that I was his only patient. He answered all my questions explained the procedure that was needed in order to solve my problem and made me feel at ease. Dr. Boyd performed a Bilateral explantation of silicone implants with capsulectomy and bilateral mastopexy. This procedure was necessary after my implants ruptured during my yearly mammogram. I had decided that I was not going to replace the implants and asked Dr. Boyd his professional opinion as to how I would look after the procedure as complete; he assured me that I would be "fine". I was kept informed on all aspects with Dr. Boyd, but also with his surgical coordinator Kristine Nickel, who also was so caring.
