I'm a woman of a certain age, and about 10 years ago I promised myself that when I retired I would get a few procedures done on my tired and saggy self in order to live my last twenty years with some form of renewed physical confidence. Well, that time inevitably arrived and I found that it was only my face and neck that bothered me. I began the search to find the right surgeon for the work, and shelled out quite a bit of money in consultation fees with highly rated local surgeons. What ended up mattering was the "vibe" of the office, the time the surgeon spent on the consultation, and the quality of his assessment of my face and neck. My goal was to look like like a less wrinkled version of myself. I did not want to look "done." All my questions were answered and all my concerns addressed by Dr. Newman. I also loved the consistently positive nursing and office staff. I don't remember the day of the surgery with any accuracy, but I will say that the anesthesiologist Dr. Patel was incredibly kind and forthcoming. She made sure that I knew exactly what to expect. I'm very happy that I chose Dr, Michael Newman for this work. I'm nearly two months out from my neck and jawline surgery and I am so pleased. I also had an Erbium laser treatment (since I'd already be under anesthesia), so the recovery was a little tough on my thin skin. During this time, Dr. Newman and his staff basically babied me (because I AM a baby about this stuff) and he answered every anxious question with a zen-like calm. I came to Dr. Newman for a breast augmentation revision, which basically entailed redoing them completely (lift, new implants, mesh support, skin removal, etc). I had a terrible experience with a previous surgeon, being a breast cancer survivor, it was pretty traumatizing. Naturally I was very nervous about getting the result I was looking for (this second go around), however it didn't take long for him and his staff, to have me feeling at ease. Dr. Newmans staff is top notch, so professional and beyond kind, from the ladies that called for appointment reminders, to the front desk staff, to the lady that was in the room with me and Dr. Newman during my consult. Dr. Newman, himself, is very soft spoken, kind and has such a good energy about him. He took his time and listened to exactly what I wanted to achieve. Summer was my nurse and she was absolutely amazing! So sweet, kept me very comfortable and warm while I waited for Dr. Newman. She was so good, I didn't even feel her put the IV in my arm (which is hard to find with my small veins). Dr. Patel was my Anesthesiologist (she's amazing). She called me a few days prior to my surgery and talked to me for about 30 minutes, going over everything she would do, the day of surgery, and really took her time discussing things I could do to ensure a Speedy recovery. On the day of my surgery She made me feel so comfortable and at ease! When I got home from surgery and was able to take my bra off and see my results, I cried happy tears. They look better than I had imagined. He gave me the lift I was looking for, without looking fake. Everything about them is perfect and symmetrical (which can be tricky, since I had a previous lumpectomy). Not only did I look amazing, I had the speediest recovery ever. I had very minimal swelling, no drains, only had to take 1 pain pill the night of the surgery and one the next night. I took Advil for 2 days and that was it. Dr Newman was a GOD send for me!! During my consult he was very kind, empathetic and extremely patience with me as I was very nervous and did not know what to expect. Hi all potential breast reconstruction women - I am an 80 year old woman who has had a lifetime of implants due to breast cancer starting in 1984. That year was my first implants. The second set were replaced in 1991 and I never paid attention to them until one day I had to. I was a very difficult case because my implants were now over 30 years old and in very bad shape. I must have seen several surgeons till I found Dr. Newman. He did an amazing job for me, was very caring and has a very sweet demeanor and is easy to work with. Broke my nose after a fall on a run a little over a month ago and looked pretty rough. I cannot say enough good things about Dr. Newman and his staff! A surgeon friend recommended him, and as soon as I met him I knew he was the surgeon for me. One of my breast implants was encapsulated, and I had a diastasis due to pregnancy. Dr. Newman was honest, gave me options, and recommended I do 2 separate surgeries. He also stressed the importance of recovery, and that i wouldn't be able to lift my kids at all for a few weeks. I had 2 small kids, under the age of 3.5, at the time I did my diastasis repair and he wasn't kidding about "no lifting" or the down time! Diastsis repair: I'd had 2 previous c-sections, my scar was uneven and had keloid. Also, the way I was stitched up made my skin puff out below the scar which was visible in fitted clothes and a bikini. I couldn't be happier with the results! My scar is almost invisible and my stomach is as flat as it it going to be after 2 kids!!! I feel so much stronger yoga, Pilates, and my daily life again! Breast augmentation: By the time I went in for my breast implant replacement my left implant was very high up, hard, the nipple pointed straight to ground, and it was noticeable in clothing. I was very self-conscious, in pain daily, and had changed the types of clothes I wore to try and hide it. It had been so long since my implant looked normal I wasn't sure I would ever look normal again. Dr. Newman was honest and gave me different implant options to consider. I went into surgery trusting Dr. Newman to pick my implant size. All I told him was that I wanted to be smaller in size and to look normal again. I also want to note, he told me I didn't need a lift and I was 100% sure I did. My breasts and nipples are symmetrical, and I definitely didn't need a lift! Receiving a breast cancer diagnosis was devastating. I wasn't even 40 yet, was in a new relationship, and had no immediate family that lived in the same state for support. I spent the first few days frantically searching for doctors. Despite the alcohol and crying fits, this was a very thorough search. I read through testimonials, called offices, and visited potential doctors. What I didn't know before the diagnosis is that good doctors tag team. This means, if you find a Surgical Oncologist you trust, that Surgical Oncologist has a go-to Plastic Surgeon that they trust as well. The first surgery (double mastectomy), if you decide to go with expanders and later implants, is done in two parts. The first half, the Surgical Oncologists removes your breast tissue, tumor(s), and nipples if you had to have them removed. The second half belongs to the Plastic Surgeon who inserts the expanders. The next few months, you're under his or her care, and depending on what you choose for your body, the Plastic Surgeon will help you get results with good aesthetics. Who you find to do this part of the job is very important. At first, I was hard on myself for being vain. "This isn't about how you look. You have cancer." But, since your body will be going through a lot, your relationship with your body can greatly affect your mental health and overall wellbeing. How you relate to yourself physically after your breasts are gone can help you heal. Most people find an Oncologist first, then a Surgical Oncologist, then the Plastic Surgeon. I went through the process backwards. I met with a Surgical Oncologist that was good, but I wasn't comfortable with the Plastic Surgeon she recommended. The images he had in his portfolio didn't look natural to me. I called Southbay Plastic Surgeons on a whim based on reviews. The woman who answered the phone (Angie) was helpful right from the start. She said that all their doctors are amazing, but when I asked her if there is someone she would choose to work on her if she were in the same situation, she said Dr. Newman. "He's our youngest doctor. Everybody loves him." To reassure me, she asked me to pick out images of other cancer patients whose results I liked. I emailed her a list with links and it turned out that the image I was most impressed with was Dr. Newman's work. I can't recommend him enough. I had some concerns about shape and size, but he really works with you to find change you're comfortable with while maintaining natural results. Dr. Newman was not only kind and attentive, he was also a perfectionist. He even recommended an amazing Surgical Oncologist from City of Hope. I ended up having a double mastectomy (avoiding radiation), expanders, then reconstruction. It was the most painful process I've had to go through physically and mentally, but it was made better knowing I had the best care possible.
