Having said this The Paper Rack does have a good selection of snacks and junk food as well as (for some reason) decent quality tinned biscuits. As has already been mentioned they also have a good selection of papers and magazines, a must for all newsagents. The staff serving me were always on the phone but managed to still be perfectly pleasant. They seemed to charge me something different every time for the same item, but it was always cheaper than the other nearby newsagent.

One area that is a bit confusing is the price labelling and it can be fairly confusing in terms of working out how much each item costs and this can be a bit of a challenge. When the shop is busy you hardly want to be asking the shop keeper how much everything costs every twenty seconds. Despite all this, I do come to this shop every time I'm in the area and in need of a quick drink or bite to eat as it is the most accessible outlet in the area. The first thing that strikes you is the window display full of tacky plastic souvenir ornaments of dogs and romantic scenes. I don't know why, but these things have become commonly sold in newsagents and cheap gift shops as of late. I can understand the niche kitsch value but how you can have an entire window display of them I don't know. This isn't a complaint, but an observed oddity. The second thing you notice, once you've stepped inside, is the very large, very impressive magazine selection. Edinburgh doesn't have many shops that sell good magazines beyond the standards. It doesn't even really have a large impressive WH Smith. But Latest News fills its shelves to the brim with specialist magazines from trout fishing to doll house collecting, thus filling a niche market. I first visited when looking for a martial arts magazine I couldn't find anywhere else, and was recommended here by a friend. Sure enough they had it in stock. So if you are stuck in Edinburgh and can't find some magazine in particular, try out Latest News. They also sells sweets and newsagents standards. At the back of the shop they offer sandwiches and snacks. I should also add that the stuff are always incredibly smiley and welcoming, making this place especially endearing.

To become a fan of this place might be a bit over the top. I happened to be going past here earlier today, and popped in to see about getting a drink. In the end, I didn't buy anything, but was fairly impressed with what was offered. Whilst it may not have a massive amount of stock compared to some of the larger newsagents, I liked the feeling of space in here. The shelves are just on the two side walls, meaning that the middle of the shop is free to allow space to wonder. This may just be because the shop itself is not massive, but I often find places like this to be crammed floor to ceiling with stuff, which can be claustrophobic at times. The stock that was there was fairly standard, with a wall of magazines (maybe one of the largest selections I've seen in a shop of this size) and one of sweets, chocolate and drinks. A good little well-designed newsagents all in all!

Returning to my night out, I was pretty peckish on my way home. Obviously everywhere was shut - it was 6.30am. Except everywhere wasn't shut. News plus, just seconds from my flat (hence I'd given up by now) was open! Result! I got a coronation chicken sandwich, which was actually very very tasty. So now I feel a sort of affinity with this place. They helped me out in my time of need so now I feel loyal to them. It's a pretty good newsagents to be loyal to. It doesn't sell more that it should, and it sells all the right things at the right price. It's just a bloody good newsagent

First of all, I'm one of the foreigners that have found their services extremely useful. They happen to sell several brands of calling cards - for those who don't know what these are, they're supposed to lessen the cost of calling relatives abroad, particularly in Africa and Asia. Whilst the claim of 1000 minutes for £5 seems like a steal, you soon realise they're usually worth only 300 minutes, and this is if you're lucky! I felt scammed the first time a quick chat with my mum had amounted to 100 minutes of talking...as if! Aside from calling cards, and the opportunity of the famed Western Union Money Transfer, they sell the usual kiosk staples of magazines, simple groceries, snacks and tobacco. It may be small, but it's extremely useful, and the staff have been really laid back and friendly every time I've been in there.

However, the Scotsman today is still a solid read, with its coverage of local and political stories. With its offices located just around the corner from the Scottish Parliament it has used its prime position to great effect with stealing a lead on other papers when it comes to the events in Holyrood! It also has some great commentators on politics and economics, such as Bill Jamieson and George Kerevan. Furthermore, it consistently provides good coverage of cultural issues in Scotland, however I think the idea that this is a national newspaper might be stretching the truth somewhat, with its emphasis on the East of Scotland. If you want to read a newspaper which has detailed articles, but also has some fun, not so serious articles in it, then the Scotsman is the paper you should pick up at your local newsagents!

I don't understand why WH Smith have to charge so much more when Boots directly across from it charges the exact same price as all it's other stores including the fabulous £2.99 meal deal. Don't be caught out in this rip off WH Smith, if you need something urgently then head to Boots instead. The magazines are papers are just the same retail price but for anything else, do yourself a favour and don't bother as it's a rip off.

There is then a kilt hire and highland wear section at the back of the shop. I saw a grand total of four items of clothing that could be hired, which is a very low range. Unless they had a lot out on hire at that time, which I think is unlikely, then you are best looking elsewhere. I felt like I was the only customer to have been in in a while. When he found that this plastic/polyester cape was no less than £35, my fiance said it seemed quite pricey for the fabric it was and asked if he might find something similar anywhere at a lower rate. The manager told him literally to Get out and (apologies for the language) Piss off. My fiance asked to talk to the manager at which the man replied You can talk to my ass. I stood outside hearing my fiance's livid account and decided it was only right to complain to them in a reasonable way and see what they said: I went in and calmly asked who he thought he was, talking to his customers like that and that my friend had been kicked out for only asking a question. ...Well, THIS is what the manager said: Shut your bum and piss off. THREEEE times he said these exact words by the way, after I asked Excuse me, dumbfounded. I neither did nor said anything nasty, loud or half as rude as what he did, but he threatened to call the cops just because I was making a complaint! How he has ever kept his business going with such an unreasonably hostile attitude, I do not know. I am going to make an official complaint to the necessary bodies because this is completely unnacceptable. I am still in shock over this experience. I have given this review online because I think it only fair to other consumers in Edinburgh.

This place, although pretty standard in what it offers, is great and one that I use often when out and about in Bruntsfield. The staff are friendly without being overbearing, and actually chat with you whilst you're at the checkout - something that I don;t often experience with newsagents pretty much anywhere. Everything you'd expect to be there is there, and whilst it's not the range of products that draws me back each time, the knowledge that there's a friendly face at the till will keep me using this place. A location opposite the bus stop into town is also really useful. The previous review is right, but I think I may have stumbled across what it is that makes this place so likeable.

This newsagents sells everything you would expect a place like this to sells such as newspapers, groceries, sweets and drinks which are very well priced considering the store is in Bruntsfield which tends to have a bit of a reputation of being overly pricey. The staff in Bruntsfield News are inviting and warm, but without being obtrusive - the best combination. I came into this store for the first time several years ago when I was new to Edinburgh to ask for directions to New Town as I was lost, and the woman I asked at the checkout was so lovely and she drew me a wee map telling me precisely where to go. It is rare that you find somewhere where the staff go out of their way to help you. Since then I have always made a point of going to Bruntsfield News to buy my supplies. There are fewer and fewer independent newsagents these days which is a crying shame, especially if they are all as amazing as Bruntsfield News.
