As a local business owner I like to support other local businesses and used this shop daily to post my mail order parcels and buy stamps as well as buy whatever I needed when passing. It's not a particularly well stocked place and It's very pricey and the stock is often out of date but it's my closest independent newsagent. I stopped taking in parcels as the woman who owns the shop seemed so pained to have to be there, and one day I was handed 2nd class stamps when I had paid for 1st and then had to really quibble to get this rectified. If my kids came with me and bought sweets they were hounded not to touch things - so I stopped going in. This morning I went in for a newspaper - really because CostCutter across the road has closed, when the owner rather curtly asked me to move my dog who I had left sitting outside but had poked his nose in the door - I went to move the dog, laying my newspaper on the counter first to come back and pay for it after I'd seen to the dog, but the owner of the shop told me to "have a nice day and get lost!" on my way to the door. Needless to say I just picked up a paper at Sainsbury's instead. This shop is in a fantastic location well served by many passers by, it would be nice to see it run by people who actually look like they want to be there. Bruntsfield is full of excellent independent shops who provide everything that Bruntsfield News does far better and often cheaper, their only advantage is they are a Post Office Counter too, but I won't be going back under it's current ownership. News Plus - another independent newsagent on the other side of the road a hundred yards up are far nicer people. read more
