UPDATE REVIEW: The owner of Mr. Transmission called me the next morning after I posted the original…read morereview below. He asked me to consider giving him and his business the opportunity to make it right **HE DID NOT ASK ME TO CHANGE OR DELETE MY REVIEW ** The owner promised his shop would do whatever repairs were necessary to my satisfaction at NO ADDITIONAL COST to me. I took my truck back to Mr. Transmission and they replaced the transmission valve body. After the work was done I test drove my truck with a mechanic. The mechanic noted that the spark plugs were misfiring and should be replaced. Although spark plugs have nothing to do with the transmission warranty, the owner said he would replace all the spark plugs at no cost to me per his promise. Now my truck is shifting without issue and acceleration is more responsive. **I have voluntarily updated this review because the owner has integrity. He made a promise that the work his shop performed would be done to my satisfaction and stood by that promise.** My F150 had gear shifting issues and I went to Mr. Transmission for a diagnostic in May. The results: I needed a new tran. The cost: $5k rebuild, $6,500 new. I went with the rebuild. 10 days later I picked up my truck and a bill for $6,600. I asked why the rebuild cost as much as the new tran and was told "because we used new parts so basically it's new." I'D BEEN SCAMMED. My truck drove better...until it didn't. 1k miles later it made a terrible noise, shuttering and no acceleration after that it had the same gear slippage issues that it had before the "new" transmission. Although the tran has a 12mo/12k warranty, after reading the other reviews from people who have had an unfortunately similar experience with shoddy repairs and price gouging, I won't go back to Mr. Transmission to be SCAMMED again.

In the fall of 2024, I took my vintage 1969 '427 Corvette Stingray to Mr. Transmission on Gallatin…read morePike in Madison, TN. I told them the symptoms of what the whole rear-end assembly was doing and how it sounded. They told me it was probably the clutches in the rear-end assembly. They had the vehicle a few weeks. When I picked it up, I noticed they had fixed the problem -- no more clunk clunk clunk as I made right-hand turns. I paid them over $3,000 for this service. But now, I noticed when going down the road, there was this NEW whining sound. I had a friend of mine drive it. He had loads of experience in working on rear-end assemblies with his own drag-race Corvette. He told me unequivocally, "They did not get the rear-end shims aligned properly -- that's why you're getting this whine. Take it back to them and have them fix it. It's clearly their fault. It never ever made this noise before and now, coming out of their shop, it whines. It's their issue. They need to make it right." I took the vehicle back to them, explained the whole situation and they told me, "We're going to have to tear it apart and see." I informed them that I should not have to pay for this since it was their problem. They informed me that they were going to do no such thing ... that I would be paying AGAIN for them to correct THEIR mistake. My high-dollar vintage Stingray was not worth having this shop mess it up. So, I took it to a rear-end specialist in Springfield. He took pictures and told me, "Those guys at Mr. Transmission did not do you right. They put the shims in that were not aligned." So, I paid this shop another $1,600 to fix Mr. Transmission's mistake ... and the car has run like a dream since. Businesses make mistakes. I get that. But not "owning up" to your own mistake and being obstinate in making it "right" financially for me was just flat out W R O N G by most people's measure.

I don't leave negative reviews, but my experience with Carl Woods Garage was disappointing enough…read morethat I felt compelled to share it. After my car wouldn't start, I had it evaluated at another shop, where I was told the starter and head gasket were problematic. Because they couldn't perform engine-related repairs, I had my vehicle towed to Carl Woods Garage for further evaluation. When Frank called me Monday morning, his attitude was noticeably dismissive from the beginning. He explained that they would need to perform their own diagnostic rather than rely on another shop's findings, which I completely understood and agreed to. At no point was I informed of the diagnostic fee or that the diagnostic might be unable to proceed without first paying for a significant repair. Later that day, Frank called to tell me the starter needed replacing and that I would have to pay over $500 for the repair before they could continue evaluating the vehicle. Given that another shop had already raised concerns about a potentially serious engine issue, I was understandably hesitant to spend that money without knowing whether the car might need repairs exceeding its value. When I asked whether they had identified any other issues during their initial evaluation, Frank repeatedly dismissed my questions and responded with condescending analogies rather than providing straightforward answers. I completely understand that certain problems cannot be diagnosed without a running engine, but I don't think it's unreasonable to want clarification about what was inspected before committing to an expensive repair. After initially agreeing to the starter replacement, I was then informed that they were short-staffed and would be closed the entire following week for vacation. Since I couldn't risk being without my vehicle for potentially two more weeks, my husband called to explain that we would need to have it towed elsewhere due to time constraints. When my husband arrived to retrieve the vehicle, Frank demanded payment for a full diagnostic fee that had never been disclosed to me beforehand. My husband questioned what the fee covered, considering we had only been told what the previous shop had already identified and had specifically been informed that further diagnostics couldn't be performed without replacing the starter. Rather than explaining the charge professionally, Frank became argumentative and condescending, even asking my husband whether he had a job, apparently insinuating that we didn't understand that people deserve to be paid for their work. Frank refused to release our keys until the fee was paid. My husband ultimately paid, and Frank stormed out of the shop. To be clear, we have absolutely no issue paying technicians for legitimate work performed. What we take issue with is being charged an undisclosed fee for an evaluation that couldn't be completed, receiving no additional clarity about the vehicle's condition, and being treated disrespectfully simply for asking reasonable questions. I understand that diagnosing mechanical issues can be complicated and that repairs sometimes need to happen in stages. However, those limitations and associated costs should be communicated to customers upfront, not after the fact. The most disappointing part of this experience wasn't even the money. It was the complete lack of professionalism, transparency, and basic customer service. I would not recommend Carl Woods Garage based on this experience. Customers deserve to understand what they're paying for and to be treated with respect when they ask questions.
