York Prep has been transformative for our daughter. After a very hard year in a local 5th grade…read morepublic school. While quite smart, she struggled academically and was bullied. This resulted in performance related anxiety and resistance in attending school. She started 6th grade at York and this year has been amazing for her. She has flourish academically with the support of all the teachers, the small classes and the Jump Start Program. She was able to make an amazing group of friends, participated in the school play and several other afterschool programs. The classes have high academic expectations which are fully supported by the amazing staff. The students are given clear multi-step projects that build over the semester. For example, in her history class she crafted a 10-page paper with references and figures. Some of the different classes also work collaboratively. In her science class she, the project incorporated skills learned in her digital arts class. York has high expectations of the students and they strive to meet these expectations knowing that teachers and other supports are always available to help them meet the goals. The small class sizes and staff to student ratio means that kids don't fall through the cracks. Any issues are identified early and addressed. Students are also supported emotionally. There is no tolerance for bullying. There is an understanding of the challenges of the middle school years. There is a mentoring class where students discuss everything from social justice, current events and internet privacy issues. The school counselors are available to meet at lunch and afterschool and work closely with teachers to address any issues that arise in the classroom. Parent support is also fantastic. The school was very responsive to any concerns and questions that arose during the year. Everyone was so professional and responsive. Our daughter is actually missing going to school this summer. For the first time in her life, she is looking forward to going to school this fall. SEND YOUR KIDS HERE.

York Prep may offer decent academics, but they are certainly less-than-decent when it comes to…read moreethics. Let me share our experience. My son is shy, a bit physically awkward, and dealing with diagnosed social anxiety. As you might imagine, he's a prime target for school bullying, which became so intense during his sophomore year of high school, that he couldn't bring himself to return. His confidence and self-esteem were shattered, as were we. At the end of that summer, days before the start of the new school year, we found an opening at York and anxiously paid a $10K retainer fee. Within 36 hours after writing that check, we learned that the chief bully, the ringleader of the harassment, was also transferring to York. An unbelievable and untenable coincidence. My son's therapist warned us that this would be a harmful situation and strongly advised us, in writing, to find another school. When we informed the administrators at York Prep about this last-minute development, and asked for the retainer to be refunded -- I remind you that the ink was barely dry on the check -- they said, "Sorry, we won't do that. You signed a retainer agreement and must forfeit your $10K". This was now just TWO DAYS before classes started! They also implied that we'd need a lawyer if we wanted to fight for a refund. The callousness York exhibited here, with no regard for my son's emotional health, and unfairly keeping our retainer after less-than two days, may be a cautionary tale for parents considering this school. On a positive note, we did find another school in the city that has provided academic excellence within a safe and nurturing community. My son is thriving, he's happy, and he's excelling as a student.

Ah, I can't believe I can wax nostalgic about my high school and it will make an impact on Yelpers!…read moreHopefully there are some future Stuy kids reading this so I'll gear this towards you young whippersnappers! 5stars because although the food isn't all that great, well you didn't come here for the food did you? The school is now located in a top notch state of the art (or at least it was brand new when I was there a decade ago) facility complete with it's own pool, weight room and a dancing studio!! (Yes, all you seniors take ballroom dancing - it is a great opportunity for a nerd to interact with another nerd of the opposite sex!) I made a lot of great friends at Stuy whom I still keep in touch with today. There is a certain sense of pride in Stuy alumni that just sticks with you - this is rare. In comparing it to other public schools, Stuy offers a plethora of learning experiences and chance to meet a diverse student pool of all racial and socioeconomic backgrounds - this is very helpful for youngsters starting out their own network. I promise you these great friends you make in your formative years will pay off. Heck I got a job recently by just thumbing through the Stuy Alumni directory. Stuy pride is strong. I will say that I do regret not taking up more extracurricular activities (of which there are MANY) and not studying as hard as I could have. Before Stuy I coasted by on just natural intelligence but when surrounded by shining nerds with just as much brain power, I lost a bit of my luster. Remember that a good hard work ethic is another amazing talent that can even outshine natural smarts. Now if you're on the fence on whether to go to Stuy, Hunter, Bronx or whatever local HS - I'd say measure the pros and cons in your situation. Hopefully the pros and cons I've listed here will help you on your decision. (and choose STUY!!)

One of my kids went to BHSEC Manhattan, and the other is now at BHSEC Queens. (I apologize in…read moreadvance for any overlap in my reviews.) Both schools will give kids a top-notch education, but the schools are not for everyone. Bard Manhattan was the first of its kind, a public high school with an accelerated program that takes 2 years to complete. The second two years are for college-level work (and, indeed, kids graduate after 4 years total with both a HS diploma and an A.A. degree from Bard College). Those 2 years of college credits can be transferred to some 4-year colleges, giving kids who want it a huge savings in both time and money. So the work is advanced and fast-moving: that's a given. Kids have to take a placement exam (not the SHSAT) to qualify, but even if you do well, it's hard to say whether BHSEC Manhattan is for you. It's a small school, and there aren't as many clubs as you can find elsewhere. Sports are not a huge part of the culture here. It's a long walk/bus ride from the nearest subway line. Writing is very important; you don't have to be a great writer at 14, but you should probably be open to improving in this area. Those are the caveats. The benefits of this school are enormous. The quality of the faculty is amazingly high (lots of PhD's), and they were always accessible for advice/extra help/mentoring. The administration was responsive, in my experience. College counseling was knowledgeable and hands-on. The classes are small and most are seminar-style. Lots of discussion, lots of back-and-forth in the classroom, lots of writing (see above). Expectations are high; you're expected to work hard and be intellectually curious. If you want big lectures, multiple-choice tests, and anonymity--forget it. The BHSEC model has expanded to Newark, Cleveland, and New Orleans. Clearly, there's a demand for accelerated HS education. For the right kid, these schools will be life-changing. As with any educational choice, the key is to know yourself.

This school is literally located 1 block away from Wall Street, and I had to do a double take upon entrance as I thought I was setting foot in an administrative building of the Holy Roman Empire. Also I don't really get this whole joke-of-the-moment about how often guys think of the Roman Empire. Can someone explain that to me? We SHOULD think about the Ancient Roman Empire. It was only the most significant and impactful civilization in all of our species' history. The Roman Empire is only where we derive our language and legal system from. Anyways, I'm getting carried away here, sorry: Okay but how could I mention the Roman Empire without mentioning Marcus Aurelius? One of the coolest, most self aware dudes in all of human history. He stayed grounded and didn't abuse his power as the Roman F**kin Emperor. I will concede that his son SUCKED though. What a d-bag. Sorry I seriously think I have an undiagnosed case of gnarly ADHD. I entered the Roman Pantheon, and asked the guy at the front desk where the gym was. He said "9th floor." I was like "I mean the basketball gym." He repeated unenthusiastically, "9th floor." GYM ON THE 9TH FLOOR IS A CRAZY FLEX! The gym was sick and while I do my best to be humble, my dear reader, I played one of the best games of my LIFE in here. I was CHOPPIN! First play of the game I took 2 HARD pound dribbles to the rack, hard stop snatch-back between my legs to a step back three and dropped this dude so bad he was doing the chicken dance on the way down trying to get his footing. I bricked the 3 though smh. I could never and would never lie to you. You ever just feel like Kyrie somedays,? I always say if I was 6 '10 I would be chasing my 6th ring rn, but God knew better than to bless me with that height. He did bless me with a lot though to be fair. I wake up grateful every day.
