My 9 year old son just started his 3rd year at this wonderful school, and it has been amazing for…read moreus! They really understand him, and his social-emotional issues. The small class size allows for very individualized attention. He is (like many of the students) an uneven learner. He reads and does math way above grade level, but needs help with writing and expressive language (but some children have more typical learning difficulties). Each family is assigned a social worker to meet with on a regular basis, and the social workers also go into the classrooms to work on social skills through "friendship" and "games" groups. There is a "black & white" notebook that goes back and forth every day, providing a means of valuable communication between the teachers and parents. He has met some great friends here, and there is a warm parent community. We can speak freely with each other about our children's "issues" - we're all in this together! So happy we found this little gem of a school! P.S. The Parents' Association hosts a wonderful lecture series on a variety of topics, mostly concerning special needs children.

We offer a social and emotional perspective to learning while maintaining a challenging mainstream curriculum. Our teachers work hand-in-hand with social workers and other specialists to respond as a team to all aspects of a child's development. Children flourish here. Our school is a place where our youngsters can form successful bonds that perhaps did not develop in other school settings. Every day, they are given the tools and techniques they need to feel safe, to succeed, and to feel a sense of achievement. And they have fun learning and forming positive relationships, often for the first time.

Our father died and they wrote a letter at the request of our uncle to the Florida Medical Examiner's Office that stated she lacked the ability to sign for our father's body. The letter made no mention of me and our uncle then intentionally omitted my name as the legal next of kin and signed for our father's body and had him cremated, which my father did absolutely not want. He still has the remains and will not return them to my sister. I even checked with their corporate headquarters and they lack any actual procedures for notifying next of kin. My number was on a speed dial button on my sister's phone in her room and they just communicate with any relative that appears before them and they refuse to even try to rectify some semblance of the situation saying "it is a family matter."

About 3 years ago, i sat in a yoga class at The Dorm. The instructor mentioned something about chronic fatigue syndrome, so i asked about it because i had been feeling weirdly tired. I was dismissed because i apparently was not too tired to leave my bed. I was taking prescribed medication so that I could make it to make it to The Dorm on time, every day and to pay attention (as if i would not be penalized if i was late). Maybe if this instructor had actually listened to me I would be a bit more fond on looking back at my experience there. Well, years later - now im finding out i have chronic fatigue, amongst various other chronic health issues. Considering i was in The Dorm group for chronic illnesses, you would think comments like i had made to an instructor, would have been taken seriously or at least not have been immediately dismissed. That was a cry for help. Also receiving a message asking for a positive review when the owner of this place can't even have a 5 min conversation with you when you're actually going there and need help is absolutely wild to me.
