La Vida Restaurant - Seafood platter for two

La Vida Restaurant

Recently under new owners and decided to try it. One reason to come but definitely a great one,…read morethe seafood platter for two. The platter is huge, with oysters (probably the best item), clams, mussels, Moreton Bay Scallops, calamari with halloumi (probably the best non-fried calamari I've ever had), prawns (huge and very tasty), shoestring potatoes and a few other things that I don't remember but certainly enjoyed. Also, given their Tasmanian roots, some of the seafood is unique to La Vida rather than what you see at the other restaurants. This platter is definitely worth one of your evenings in Noosa.

Bugs. Moreton Bay or Balmain. Shovel Nosed Lobsters. The family Scyllaridae…read more I have loved these critters for ever. Up at Noosa Moreton Bay Bugs are a joy to behold, if you can find somewhere that be holdin' them. Problem is most places want to show off with my little guys and put them in a ravioli or turn them into some kind of foam or do something weird with them so that they aren't bugs any more. Not this place. It used to be called Lindonis I think - thats probably why I am the first to review it. Fact is its been here for twenty years, but for my 200th review I am happy to declare this place serves the best bugs this side of a dirty Chinese kitchen. BBQ'd with garlic and dill butter. Thats all. And eight, yep eight of the little bottom feeders! It takes very good chef to know that the produce is the star and not the cook. I remember an old mate once told me that in French cuisine the chef is the star and in Italian the food is the star. Here the bugs are the stars. We shared a plate of crumbed calarmari and a plate of veggies, which, because this place is classy, was called a 'stack'. The calarmari was sensational, even though it looked like the sort of meal you'd get at a suburban Pizza joint. I asked why they were so good and the owner told me they were fresh caught, marinated in kiwi fruit for just long enough to tenderise them but not so long as to cook them and that the crumb was a special Japanese technique known only to direct descendants of the Samurai Emperor Bugsansei. And I believe her. Left my phone at home 'cos up here you eat in boardies - your good ones for upmarket places and your old faves for the other places. Keeno has some photos which the kids may be able to upload to this review. I shouldn't even try or I will break something.

Exploring, & popping in for lunch drawn to its gorgeous upscale fit-out. Clean lines, Lots of dark wood, incandescent lighting, ceiling fans, retractable ceiling, and prominent surrounding plants and rock face. Ambience is relaxed, a nice way to have lunch. Service is excellent. Friendly, and ever-present, without being overbearing. Lunch Menu is divided into share plates ("Cicchetti"), Mains ("Pranzo"), as well as Salads & Pizza. Cicchetti & Pranzo prices ranged from $8-23, and $18 - $38 respectively. Start with some amazing sweet potato & pumpkin Gnocchi ($8), with buffalo ricotta, rosemary & sage cream. Unique & divine, available only at lunch. Follow it up with prosciutto & sage wrapped scallops with lemon parsley oil ($8). Another top-notch starter. Continue the gourmet experience with a Filetto di pesce. Snapper with Sicilian green olives, crispy kipfler potatoes, artichoke, white wine & saffron brodetto. Round off with some organic Acquerello Carnaroli saffron risotto, Moreton bay bug, & Gympie baby zucchini. Both mains, are "Wow"! But wait, there's more. If you have room for dessert, go straight to the heavens with the Bombolini. A hazelnut chocolate crème patissiere centred Italian doughnut, praline, & vanilla bean gelato. Add some Valrhona Chocolate fondant, cherry coulis heart, with Saffron gelato, & you have just completed one extraordinary lunch, both in taste & experience. Locale is a must-try if you want to treat yourself, to modern & upscale Italian cuisine. Definitely one of Noosa's gems on Hastings St. Open daily from 12pm.

However, no self respecting NYC establishment would ever put out a pizza like this. Between the crust, sauce, cheese, onions, and arugula, this was a remarkably tasteless pizza. None of it shone through at all. Tasteless, thin white crusts are emblematic of Australian pizza, but sometimes the toppings bail it out. Not this time. I could hardly even tell there was tomato sauce there, and the onions were soggy and lifeless. The bar isn't high for pizza around here, but even in Noosa, I've found better pizza. I simply couldn't in good conscience rate this place higher.

We had a variety of dishes ranging from chicken to calamari however I personally ordered the anti-pasto platter from the 'to share' menu and was surprised at the size of the platter (bigger than I thought) and the quality and flavour of the ingredients. A very tasty meal and enjoyable experience and most notable was that it represented great value for a light meal at a very reasonable price ($25 / head not including my wife's wine) Lovely people, lovely food and a great view of the river. Would not hesitate to return.

So I'm pretty sure I had takeaway from here a few years ago so this was my first dining experience…read more I went with my girlfriend and her parents. The waitress that seated us was semi friendly and one of the tables was wobbly. While we perused the menu, a lady that must have been the owner came to take our order. She had a bit of a passive aggressive attitude (in my opinion... Maybe I'm just too sensitive haha) while we were trying to decide (my gf's parents are vegetarians so we were trying to figure out what they could eat). We ordered 2 large pizzas (a pumpkin pizza, a "paradise" pizza - smoked chicken, sundried tomato, onion, capsicum) and 2 pasta dishes. My gf and I went to buy some wine as they're byo and by the time we got back meals had started coming out... Very quick as it was about 10-15 minutes! So this made me even more weary, because food that comes out that quickly surely has something up with it. My pizza was nice and hot from what I could see. But the chicken was a bit sparse. As a lover of pizza I believe the first slice tells it all. The smell was a bit strange to me. Couldn't put my finger on what it was. The chicken was a bit bland and I think it was a bit over cooked. The base was thin but gave me a feeling that it may have been reheated. The hero of the pizza was the sundried tomatoes and the right amount of cheese. If it wasn't for that I wouldn't have finished it. Everyone else was pretty happy with their meals so I must be a real pizza connoisseur haha (more likely really picky lol) For a first experience I was satisfied but I would definitely look at other options over 100% going back. Not cheap either!

All the meals are prepared fresh to the extent that the pizza bases and all the pasta are also made fresh daily. As such; not all pasta types are available every day but hey, that's part of the experience! The serving sizes are appropriate and well priced for Noosa. We ordered a Regular Mexican Pizza and a Small Sweet Chilli Crab Pizza (see photos). Both were excellent. The restaurant is B.Y.O and the is a BWS over the road should you forget to bring a bottle with you. The owners were more than happy to point out how to get to the bottle shop before you settle in. Free cake (a family secret recipe) was served after dinner (see photos) which was a nice touch. All-in-all a very pleasant experience that I would recommend to friends and family.

It's not unexpectedly fairly costly in this premium location, with an extra charge on holidays (common practice around these parts, but notable as that's when people go to the beach). Nonetheless, I managed to avoid this as for some reason didn't put the sign up until after I'd paid. The place was busy, and it's a nicer dining area than average. The pizza itself was notable for the quantity of toppings. The pizza I ordered had pumpkin, artichokes, and sundried tomatoes. I'm not wild about pumpkin, but it was a palatable pizza, and I was full enough to walk all the way around the nearby national park and start my trip back without so much as a hint of hunger. Seeing as how the Sunshine Coast region has yet to catch the vegetarian fever that has spread through Gold Coast and Brisbane, this place is an acceptable option for me.
