Our group included my husband and myself as well as our 2 teenage children and 2 of their friends. From the moment we stepped aboard the boat, we were greeted warmly by the very experienced and able captain; Captain Rags. The accomodations were ample for our crew of 6 passengers and all slept comfortably aboard. The kitchen provided adequate supplies for preparing our daily "Happy Hour" of appetizers and wine and later provided plenty of room for preparing dinner. The "extras", being the skiff, the kayacks, the paddle boards and the snorkeling gear, really kept us and the kids busy exploring the harbor of Avalon as well as a quiet bay we sailed to on the second day. We even managed to catch enough sand dabs one night for dinner to go with our Steak - "Surf and Turf" aboard a vintage sail boat. It really doesn't get any better than that. We loved the amount of deck space, that seemed very large for a sailboat, and all the wood details really gave the boat an authentic feel. About $22 for all day parking. Ferry's Ambiance: The ferry's are relatively clean, has a decent amount of seats inside and outside, and a couple of working unisex restrooms. The boat ride is about an hour long. So make sure you take your Scopolamine or any other sea sick pills. If you schedule a evening ride back, please do yourself a favor and seek shelter inside or wear a lot of layers of clothes when sitting out. It's get a bit chilly and slightly wet. Sightseeing: You'll be able to see the famous vincent thomas bridge and a lighthouse nearby. When you get closer to Catalina Island, you'll be able to see the Casino. Food and Drink Of Choice: Haven't had any food or drinks, but they do sell them. Note: You're able to bring food and non-alcoholic drinks onboard. I always buy a round-trip ticket, as sometimes, especially on holidays, the ferries can be fully booked; sold out! Also, if you need to change the time on your booking, it's $5! Parking | Plentiful! $22 per day! Free for the 1st hour! $2 afterwards! Refreshments | Cafe | Upon arrival, inside of the building and on board! I usually go to the café inside of the building and get a freshly made egg and cheese burrito to go...so delicious, especially with the side of salsa! We got lucky and saw pods of dolphins playing right alongside the boat, and the mid-channel ocean plunge and Blue Caverns cave snorkel stop were out of this world. Having about four hours to explore the island on top of an epic on-the-water experience made it the ultimate day trip. It was a truly great experience, and I will definitely be doing it again!

There is a ton of (paid) parking in the lot so no concerns there. You can do the self-guided tour or they offer several guided tours for an additional fee. My guess is those guided tours are very good. We spoke with several of the volunteers onsite and generally, they were extremely knowledgeable about the ship. If you have mobility issues, the Iowa is not for you. Period. You will be climbing numerous ladders going both up and down. There is a hot dog stand on the ship that looked pretty good. It is named after the Iowa's canine mascot, Vicky. Overall, touring the ship was very interesting. Seeing the unbelievably massive guns in person is mind blowing. You do not realize their size until you see them in person. My only knock on the ship is the signage could be a little better. Sometimes you peek into various areas or rooms and you have no idea what you are looking at. This is well worth a visit, particularly if you enjoy military history. The Iowa (and its class of Iowa battlsehips) was a very important ship at one time. FYI, I am generally a fan of Groupon and the Battleship Iowa deal shows up often. At the time of our visit, the Groupon price was exactly the same as the price offered at the battleship entrance itself. (I think buying online on the Iowa website might have saved us a few dollars overall, if we had done that.)
