So many dolphins!
Jessica H.

I purchased an Aquarium + Grey Whale Watching package online for ~$60. Went to the Aquarium in the morning and hopped on the 3pm whale watch tour. The boat was a lot nicer than expected since there were a few smaller, older looking boats on the dock. I had to line up before getting on and got there ~10 mins before the tour started and found myself already at the back of a very long line. You need to have a physical ticket with you in order to board the boat so if you purchased your ticket online like me and "forgot" to print it before getting there, you'll need to go to the onsite ticket booth and ask them to print it for you - so factor in that time. Tip: go to the bathroom inside the aquarium before the tour because the bathrooms by the docks are pretty dirty and do not have soap (the soap didn't run out - there literally are no soap dispensers). They will take a photo of you in front of the boat before you get on the boat and you can purchase the photo after the tour. Since I boarded the boat quite late, many of the "good" spots (outdoors on the dock) were already taken. But don't worry! It gets pretty (VERY) cold on the tour and many people head inside so you will definitely get a seat outside on the deck! You will need a jacket if you go on the tour. If you don't bring one, you will have a bad time. The boat gets super bumpy at times and if you like that kind of thing you will have a great time sitting outside on the front deck. They have a guide on board who will talk about the different wildlife and alert you if there are any animal sightings. Luckily, my tour was not short of dolphin sightings and it felt magical when the dolphins swam alongside the boat (I think they like the waves the boat creates?) I was SO COLD (even with a jacket) throughout the tour and had to head inside to warm up a few times. They have a no frills snack bar with chips, candy, drinks, and hot dogs for very reasonable prices. I think the bag of Doritos I purchased was only $1. The hot dog isn't fancy though - just a regular supermarket hot dog on a bun. All in all a very positive experience - loved seeing the dolphins swimming free in the wild

Wonderful experience! Loved it and saw so many dolphins and a couple of whales! Such a sweet crew too!

Soaring buddies during the ride.

Lovely ride. Seagulls float with the boat and keep you company. Keep an eye on them in case one goes on a bombing run. I saw a few dolphins from several hundred feet back. Nature can't be relied upon to make appointments so consider yourself lucky to see a whale/dolphin/marine life up close. The staff are super friendly, snacks on boat are affordable, and bathrooms are clean. Boat was plenty comfy. Fellow passengers polite and well-behaved. We're already planning our next trip during the week, hope to get lucky and see a big whale splashing. Bring a jacket and scarf. As I said, the ladies in the ticket booth were sweet and accommodating and the crew... Awesome! Thanks for a nice Sunday ride.

Saw whales and lots of dolphins. Took the 3pm slot and we saw the sun set too. It was a really great experience for the price, the staffs are friendly, and there are bathrooms on the boat. It gets windy once we got to the open ocean, so remember to dress appropriately.

First, the staff was consistently professional, friendly, helpful, knowledgeable. They work hard t o make this a good experience. The Aquarium of the Pacific interns who are part of the tour share useful, interesting information about what we were and hoped to see in ocean life and the surrounding area. Plenty of places to sit with great views. Snacks available. This was a great experience.

Hey if you look online you can find great deals for whale watching trips in long beach. I believe they are about 35 dollars a person when you buy at the box office but online you can get them as low as 15 dollars a person. Is not a bad deal especially because the trip is well worth it, when I went last week we saw dolphins, whales, turtles, and sea lions. This was more than I had expected, I honestly thought id be a waste of money and we would see nothing but I was wrong. Searching is done by the people on board they ask everyone to keep an eye out for them and if you spot one call it out and the boat will race towards it is actually pretty cool. Inside the ship they serves snacks like hot dogs, chips, colas, candy's and even beer, yes beer. Not recommended to drink in the ship tho the boat is not exactly a slow smooth ride to the destination. Also it takes about 30 minutes to get to the destination and the trip itself is about 3 hours. invest in it, you wont regret it.

My main complaint is that I wish they wouldn't blast music the entire time, esp as it sort of ruins the experience. I took a tour a year back and there was no music. But because of -2) below I did not because that had my unused $40 ticket fee already that was not refundable. I felt that was my tip instead. See below. NEGATIVES -1) The access to the boat IS NOT handicap accessible. I did not see this warning on their webpage when we ordered a ticket for our 75 year old mother. If I missed the warning I apologize. -2) Tickets are non refundable once you order. This was noted on their website. We ended up loosing (1) $40 ticket cost because our mother was not able to go. It would have been nice to have been offered a voucher to come back at a later date considering, A) you had our money already, B) 1 return voucher would have obviously turned into other purchased tickets and not just the one person and they would have gained more fees. -3) Because tickets are non refundable I do not recommend buying them in advance. Although you save $5 by buying early you may end up loosing out if your whole party doesn't end up going like we did. Just get there at least 30-45 minutes early and get in line. You'll be fine.

And all though we still made the best of it it really did not live up to what was promised and the amount of money we paid. So let's start with m: 1. The address did not match what was listed on their Yelp page and created a lot of confusion and frustration especially since we had kids with us. I had to text the owner, Mario, and he gave us another location to charter form which was not at all what was listed on their page. 2. Not sure if the captain of the day,Noah, was having a bad day or what but he was definitely not in the mood to greet us properly. He was very short, not so friendly and barely spoke to us during our ride. 3. The boat was not like the photos they presented or posted on Yelp. I even texted the owner and asked him to send me a few photos of what the boat will look like. It was definitely dirty, the coaches were so damaged and dirty they had black clothes over them. One of inside couches was wet, my uncle sat on it unknowingly making his pants wet and him uncomfortable for the rest of the ride. 4. The table surfaces were all damaged & chipped. We had to be careful for the kids not to get splinters when they would approach the table to grab something to eat. 5. Worst of it all was that we only watched cargo shipments for 2 hours!! On our phone call with Mario mentioned we can go through the canals and even get a far glimpse of the Queen Mary but we didn't. We even asked Noah to take us the other way around into the open water and he said no he needs to this way first (meaning by the cargo shipments). It was very disappointing since it was my dads actual birthday and the experience was completely robbed from us. It's very sad that we wasted over a thousand dollars and didn't receive what we had paid for. And I even texted Mario afterwards telling him our concerns but didn't get a reply back. Poor customer service.

The first time, I went with Harbor Breeze on their big boat, the second was with SoCal Whale Watching on a much smaller rigid inflatable boat. The pluses are that you covered more ground and therefore have a chance to see more animals. I think Captain Steve covered about x5 the distance on his boat in comparison to the much slower big boat. You are also down low and next to the water, which means you can see the animals up close. The main downside is that it is not as comfortable as the bigger boat and you have to remember to bundle up really warm. Don't worry about getting sea sick though. Big boats tend to roll a lot, whereas this little boat was surprisingly smooth. You have less of a chance of getting sea sick on this little boat. We had some chop and a fair swell, and it didn't affect me at all. It is not uncomfortable or bumpy, but there is no cabin or restroom like on a big boat. Captain Steve was friendly and knew his marine biology really well. He answered questions and explained things as we went. On our trip, we got to see a giant pod of common dolphins, a big fin whale, and the two gray whales. We started out due west and made it about halfway to Catalina, and then went northeast and ended up off of Palos Verde. We covered a lot of square miles. Unfortunately, no orcas, but I was very pleased with the trip.

Went on a 2 hour tour with Captain Erica and Molly, down in Newport Beach. They were absolutely the best. Captain Erica was knowledgeable and friendly that we were able to enjoy the whole ride. We saw a momma grey whale and baby and hundreds and hundreds of bottle nose dolphins. As Captain Erica said, we must have had lucky people on board to experience both on the same tour. Molly got some awesome and amazing shots that she was able to share with us. We thoroughly enjoyed the surfing dolphins that were created by the wake from our boat. The conditions were perfect, and the experience was worth every penny. We're already planning our next tour for the upcoming season and can't wait to book an Oxnard adventure with them. Hopefully we can get this dynamic duo again. Can't speak highly of Captain Erica and Molly. Total worth it. See you guys soon.

This review is for the logistics of the cruise port itself, and in that respect, it was OK. My wife and I came on a Monday mid-morning, with the Lyft from downtown Long Beach to San Pedro taking 15 minutes and costing about $30. Our scheduled check-in time was 12:30 at Berth 92, but through experience knew that we could arrive earlier. Unlike the nearby Long Beach cruise port, there is no green space here...it's a very utilitarian set-up, basically a cruise terminal using a large maritime warehouse. Arriving at 10:00, we bypassed the luggage check-in area since we had only carry-on luggage. All guests were allowed to get in the security check line inside. It's a similar set-up to an airport, with us needing to lift our bags to go through conveyor x-ray (except sealed liquids are allowed). One thing they will confiscate is hard liquor, beer, and a second bottle of wine per person. They also will question power strips, unless it's needed for medical equipment like a CPAP machine. Once through, you are directed to a series of smaller queues, each with a port worker with tablet, checking people in. One of us needed to bring up the boarding pass on our phone, and then provide both of our passports. It didn't take long, and we were reminded that we wouldn't need our passports again during our trip (which ended up being true). Unlike other cruise lines, RC does not give you your sea pass/room card at this time. Thus, your boarding pass on your phone is important, even after check-in. Each cruise port does the next part slightly differently. Here, we were directed to a large sitting area with makeshift folding chairs, where we sat down to wait. It didn't take long: at about 10:30, people were allowed to board the ship. We needed to get our boarding pass scanned again at the port one last time. We boarded the ship by 10:45. On disembarkation day, we got off on Berth 92. Berth 93 had the RC Navigator of the Seas. There were two gangways on Deck 5, one on each end of the ship. The Royal Theater and Two70 were good places to hang out. Vacating our room was mandatory by 8, but we left by 7, hoping to leave with our hand carried luggage early. The lines were well organized, with attendants clearly directing people how to use their luggage to maintain their place in line. At exactly 7:30, the ship was cleared by the port and we started moving. We scanned our ship card for the last time, and then walked a long portable winding gangway. From there was a narrow escalator to ground level. We were in the group that was self-assist, meaning we had all of our luggage with us and didn't need to pick up any additional luggage (though it looks like the workers had already made good progress from the look of things). From there we went through passport control, with one line for folks with birth certificates only, and the two for folks with passports. All it took was one picture and we were done. The area for rideshare (and private pickup) is right in front of Berth 91. It was crowded when we got there, but it was very difficult to get a rideshare. We later learned that it was because the port authority had blocked much of the roads into port in preparation for the Memorial weekend facilities. So many rideshare drivers just didn't want to deal with it. After cancellations, I upgraded to a Black Lyft (about 2.5 times the normal price) and got someone pretty quickly (we got lucky..he had dropped somebody off earlier and was just looking for a ride worth his while). Ended up costing us about $70, but we got home before 9 am. Extras: -- Has 3 Berths: Berth B92 is the main terminal, with B93 being used when B92 is used. On very rare occasions, there could be a third ship docked, and that would use B46 (about 2 miles south on the outer harbor). There is also a B50, which is also located on the outer harbor (only used once in 2026). There's been talk about converting the outer berths into a real-time cruise terminal, rivaling those in Galveston or Florida. Nothing concrete though. -- Like LAX, the designers didn't really think about how cars can effectively get in/get out when very busy (i.e. two ships in port together). -- During the summer months, only RC uses this port: two ships, one doing weekly cruises (Fridays) and one doing 4 day/3 day (Mondays and Fridays). Thus Fridays are the days when most busy.
