Middle Eastern cuisine is very hard to find in this part of the world, but Istanbul Grill is bringing it! It feels very authentic as well, from the decor, to the menus, to the food itself. The menu is very robust. I just had to have falafel because it is my favorite food. It was very tasty and had a very nice mixture of toppings. It was absolutely worth the trip from Burlington, and it will be worth it from wherever you are too. read more

Came in on a Saturday at lunch time. So grateful the place was open! We ordered gyro salad and pita with hummus. This is probably the best hummus ever ever had. The saladas was also delicious, the flavors extremely fresh. I highly recommend eating here! Now for something else: You have to be pretty miserable and inconsiderate to leave a 1 star review like the person who couldn't eat here because the owners closed at a time that was not ideal for that customer... seriously, the entitlement of some people and the willingness to try to ruin a business just because, is sad. Leave 5 star reviews for small businesses or bring complaints directly with owners, the audacity.... Anyways, foods is awesome, service great. Come eat here! read more

Some real gems here. The Babaganoush was incredible. Out of this world. Worth visiting just for that. The falafel was golden brown and perfectly tasty with the tahini sauce. Also fantastic was the grapevine leaves which are apparently imported from Turkey. Really tasty. The chicken skewer was also fantastic. Not sure about the lamb or shrimp. Not much to celebrate there. The server was knowledgeable and friendly. The place itself was bright and cozy. See pics. One thing is that it is over priced. I would avoid the "feta platter" as its just a tomato cut into pieces and a few olives and some crumbled feta. So watch out for dishes that might be marked up a little too much. read more

I've been coming here since it was the Constantinople Grill! Har! This place is delicious- they have some fantastic cooking going on here. We went for breakfast- their Turkish breakfasts are simply amazing! I got the Sucuk breakfast- which is a type of Turkish spicy sausage, served with olives, eggs, potatoes, some spicy peppers, and tomatoes. It was so exotic, yet down home cookin'. It was smoky, spicy salty and delicious. The eggs were perfectly cooked and the sausage added another dimension to the dish! The owners are straight from Turkey. They beamed with pride when we talked about their homeland. The decor is all authentic, with posters of Turkey and pieces of Turkish art. They even serve up the Turkish coffee! The owners took over the old telephone company headquarters and put in this strange brick building, with interesting architecture. It apparently used to be where the operators would answer the phones and direct you when you dialed by shouting into the receiver, "Klondike 542!" It's not exactly ADA compliant. There's a series of steps you have to climb to enter, and there's no ramp that I'm aware of. It's less than a flight of stairs to get to the dining area or the outdoor area. The food and the service were both fantastic! I highly recommend this place to anyone in Iowa! read more

Yum!!! The lentil soup is amazing. I wish I could replicate it at home. I had the eggplant sandwich along with some delicious crispy fries. (I know the fries weren't healthy, but a girl has to have a little guilty pleasure.) The hostess (I assume proprietor) was charming and very friendly. I love little places like this. Ok, so I'm from out of town. WAY out of town - like California. So I was not expecting a lot in a rural Iowa town But it is the 4th of July and virtually nothing else is open, sooooo... I was floored. I had the falafel combo plate and the falafel was perfect. Crunchy on the outside, tender in the inside with just the right amount of seasoning. The tabuleh was to die for, could have eaten twice as much, the hummus ( so often bland and tasteless) was packed with flavor. The waitress was really helpful, made some recommendations, and brought me extra hot pita when I asked. (Had to get every bit of the baba ganoosh.) The atmosphere is a little lacking, but I would come back again (and again). read more

The other day, exactly what the other reviewer described, happened to me. The owner/server was incredibly rude to me. She impatiently cut me off while asking her a question about the menu. Because of her rudeness, I decided to leave and she said something to the degree of "good that you are leaving. Don't come back in the future. I won't serve you again." This kind of behavior is absolutely unacceptable and it seems to be impacting their business already, since the place always seems to be empty. On another note, their food isn't bad, especially the gyro wrap. I would just recommend that you order to-go until they finally hire someone more capable. read more

The Istanbul Grill was formerly a few blocks west on Burlington but now is in the old telephone building which was once Ten-Ten. The staff here is very nice and the menu choices are something you won't find elsewhere in town. Went here with my husband and 3 kids on a Saturday night. Owner was very friendly and explained the menu items and answered a lot of questions. We ordered falafel as an appetizer, kids had usual kid food, a gyro sandwich, and a chicken skewer. I'm Vegan, so I can pretty much find something to eat anywhere, but I usually have to have the dish built for me. Wether I have to take out a bunch of ingredients or take multiple ingredients and design my own plate. But not here. They have several delicious dishes that all I have to do is say no cheese, or no dressing. I think of my self as a falafel connoisseur. This place has by far, the absolute best falafel that I've ever had. I eat there as much as I can. I spoke with David, the owner, about his falafel. He says that he's been perfecting it over the years with customer suggestions. In my opinion, it doesn't need any more perfecting, with the homemade tahini, fresh crisp lettuce and cucumber, hummus, matched with a side of fries. Try it, you'll leave satisfied. read more

I have friends in town that really like this restaurant but its not my favorite. I've been there twice and didn't find anything compelling about it. Very pedestrian IMHO. Prices are average, service and food were OK. It's a mom and pop place but without the ambiance of an authentic ethnic restaurant. One of our party loved the falafel, but I hought it just standard fare. The veggie combo, which I had on two consecutive days, was average, but wildly overpriced for such small portions. The real problem was the obnoxious server, apparently the owner's wife. For example, one of our group politely asked for a service setting setting & was sharply told by the server that "I know what I'm doing. I've done this for 10 years!" Yes, well, you didn't know enough to bring an extra service setting for one more person. Another time, we stayed right to the 2 PM closing time, but we were finishing up. Here comes the server, telling us to get out so she could close! So, we got up and left. I can't really recommend this place. The Istanbul Grill is one of our favorite places to eat. The very nice lady who waits the tables is efficient , but will take to time to answer any questions you have or share an interesting story. The food is always exemplary and authentic. You can tell that everything is made to order and done with care. The shrimp kabob is my favorite. We also enjoy gyro wrap and lamb kabobs. A really quaint food place! The lighting and the wall decor was really nice. Soft Turkish/Persian music playing in the background. Their soup of the day, a lentil soup, something you couldn't really mess up and they didn't. I had the Veggie Kebab which was alright.
