The view is great so I wasn't expecting much from the food...boy was I wrong! The fresh fish eggs bennedict was out of this world! My server, Tawni, was soooo sweet and quick! Thank you for a great breakfast:) read more

Sad, just so sad... 3 people walked by before we were greeted by the hostess. We got sat at a table that was so lopsided that my coffee spilled. My daughter had to put her slipper under it just to even things out. Then, coffee came in a dirty cup...drink/mouth stains on both sides of cup. It was quickly replaced with a pristine white cup. Then I saw the neighboring table served with the same nasty stained cups. Server quickly brought out a sample of the milkshake to ease what probably looked like our discomfort and overall disappointment. We were given water right away in disposable cups where everyone else around us had house cups. Ordered the Benedict and was surprised about the eggs being so under cooked. Nothing like trying to slurp the coagulant of your eggs up just to get a taste of your food. I don't mean malcontent but as I love Benedict and eat them everywhere I go, this was the worst tasting hollandaise I think I've had. It came on a croissant but alas, even to cut it with a knife was tough. Great attempt, just off the mark. My daughter's scrambled eggs had egg shells in them. Luckily, my son's breakfast was cooked appropriately. The kicker in all of this was that we were the only locals...or what appeared to be so, among a sea of touri (plural for tourist). For a $50 breakfast, Island Lava Java, please challenge yourselves to better. read more

Adequate restaurant by the water. We came here late on a Friday night with no reservation so were willing to take whatever table we could get. The furikake crusted fish I got was dry, and the salad on the side they gave me was just fine. It was mixed greens and a vinaigrette. The fish sandwich my brother got was also decent - a little dry, but flavorful. The li hing mui margarita I got was fantastic! I thought it was a little odd that it came in a champagne coupe glass, with no garnishes, but it was tasty. The large entree salad my mother got was what docked off a star for me. It was literally mixed greens, barely dressed, with very small amounts of cheese and walnuts. It was maybe 20-30% larger than my side salad. Totally not worth it. Service was nice and the ambiance was great. read more

Came for brunch on several days while visiting the island. The food was very good. I recommend the Down in the Garden croissant sandwich. The bacon here is amazing, especially the candied version in the Bloody Mary. If you like a good bloody that's not too thick and a touch spicy then this is your spot. Comes with a black salt rim, slice of jalapeño and a piece of brown candied bacon. I went with the house vodka but I would splurge for Tito's next time. The only reason I didn't give 5 stars is that I came to get a to go order and sat down to have a Bloody Mary while waiting and it came out without bacon a jalapeño or salt. When I asked I was told they didn't have it? Then I find out the bartender isn't the regular person and she admitted she didn't know where it all was. Okay, but why didn't she ask someone? I didn't even drink it because it had too much well vodka and it was too strong. Other than that, service was great and the location is perfect with free parking in back. read more

My favorite place to have breakfast on the Big Island! I had the most delicious french toast on my most recent visit. Do not miss if you are staying in Kona! read more

A tourist trap, see how much money they can get. Nice getting you seated, then charge you anything they can to get money. Cheap asses charged $2.50 for a refill on my Tea/lemonade. And took 30 minutes to even get it to me. Very mediocre food. My steak had so much fat I could barely stomach it. You're solely paying for view and location, the rest is crap. Grab some tacos or other food nearby and sit next door at the volleyball courts or on the wall and get the same view without being overcharged. read more

My Grandson and I love to go to Lava Java and we've been going for years. It's a trip to town and a beautiful view. Naturally since I'm turning 69 it was our first choice for my birthday breakfast. We arrived on time for our reservation. I had booked ahead online requesting a view table stating it was my birthday. We were seated upstairs towards the back. No mentioning our view table. The restaurant was packed. We ordered our food. (I must say our waitress Tawney was fabulous as always.) and the buster was a JOY! I mentioned to the hostess that I had requested a view table. Apparently it didn't appear. A view table opened up and I requested to move. When the food arrived, I ordered the basic breakfast with crisp bacon, toasted croissant and eggs over easy, the croissant had been grilled and was greasy, the potatoes were the bottom of the pan, charred and the eggs were over cooked. The decaf mocha americano was delicious. My orange juice arrived ten minutes after the food. Fresh squeezed? Yes, but froth w/ice and overpriced. We love this restaurant, but it's quite a drive to get there. No mention of my birthday. Darn I'm disappointed. read more

Perfect Sunday brunch destination in Kona. We ended up nearby and popped in. Very short wait - text notification when it was our turn. We got cocktails and all enjoyed - particularly their version of a coconut monitor. The burgers were giant and tasty - fluffy buns and creamy aioli. The fish tacos were grilled perfectly! The kiddie pancakes came with a fun surprise, chocolate chips. The eggs Benedict had a nice touch with a croissant. Everyone left happy and full. Service was great on top of all the other fabulosity! read more

Great location and excellent breakfast. Never disappoints. Only dings are lack of decaf coffee and birds eating off of unbused tables.

The mahi mahi special/fresh fish of the day was very fishy. It couldnt have been fresh. The service and rest of the entres were excellent.

Ugh! This was so delicious. I had the island eggs benedict and that egg! it was perfectly poached. I sliced through it and it was thick and oozed the right amount . We had been eating around the island and nothing had really wowed until this breakfast. It is delicious and worth it. Not to mention that view! Beautiful! read more

Location: 5 stars Service: 3 stars Food: 2 stars Price: 3 stars Had quite a few friends recommend this place but unfortunately it did not live up to the hype. Food was a bit bland. I ordered the Hawaiian style pancakes and my wife ordered their fish platter. Fish came out a little cold and lacked flavor. The portion size is decent hence the 3 stars on price. If you want more flavorful food, try more local favorites. read more

Back to one of our favorites in Kona, Island Lava Java. Our server this time was Mark, sweet young guy. Very friendly and talked story with us . Suggested his favorite, the pork chop but we had already ordered the combo pizza on happy hour. Next splurge will surely be that pork chop. We love Lava Java for breakfast , lunch or dinner, quality fresh food and friendly sweet servers. Thank you Mark, thank you Lava Java. The Phillips read more

This is an excellent restaurant with healthy and delicious food, good service and very professional.

Amazing view. Awesome staff. Eggs Benedict was big and delicious. Bacon is off the chart here!!! Also the potatoes! Pancakes are delicious but too many nuts. Still worth it read more

We decided to eat here one Erving this week while in Kona. The Server couldn't be bothered. Food was not that good. The view was nice.

The service was good, but the food was really bad. My wife ordered the vegetable scramble, which was inedible because of the over-ripe vegetables. The avocado slices were dark brown. We asked for fresh slices, and our waitress brought out fresh ones. Shame on the management for trying to foist food that is past its use-by date. read more

Great food and service !! Excellent view of the bay!! Always a treat!! Oh and the coffee choices are amazing!!

We have gone to Lava Java many times. The sunsets and food couldn't have been better. Our friends who came along raved about the whole experience. The servers are friendly too. Bloody Mary's & the eggs Benedict were superb. read more

I must have caught it on a bad day. Went here in early August 2019. Service was excruciatingly slow, food was pretty bad. I had a poke bowl and it was seriously the worst poke bowl I've ever had. My kid ordered ribs (she loves ribs) and she quit eatin them after about 4-5 bites. They have a great location and if you just want to sit there and admire the view and hang out, I can see this being a decent spot, but quite honestly, I cant see myself ever going back. This place was a complete fail. read more

Wow. So good!!! View incredible, food so fresh and delicious. The eggs Benedict was on a croissant, beautiful hollandaise, perfectly poached eggs. Potatoes well seasoned. When a place allows me to choose my bacon crispy or soft, you know they understand that breakfast is important! Was great to be able to make a reservation through OpenTable, so that we could sit in our ocean view hearing about the over an hour wait for walk-up customers. In general, I love breakfast places that take reservations as hungry goes quickly to hangry in the morning! The coffee was amazing (hubby and I shared a large french press pot). In our party, we had an eggs benedict, pancakes, waffle and papaya yogurt granola. Everything was the BOMB! Even though all the servers are wearing masks, you can still tell they are smiling - we ordered through the app interface, (let the machines do the work!) which again, is so convenient - all the options available, but the servers bringing the food were super friendly and helpful. read more

Huge tourist trap. Prices on the latest Yelp menu are lower than they actually are on the restaurant's menu. Basic, overpriced, and flavorless food (my husband and I shared the Big Kahuna breakfast). You'll get better value for your money elsewhere. read more

Nice location overlooking the ocean, it's Kona - be happy and content, right? OK, they have to charge a little more for Hawaiian real estate, and a nice view. It's just OK. I could complain that my tuna was cooked well done, but so what? Everything else came out predictably boring as described - nothing exciting to report, it was just some basic sustenance in a beautiful location. Saving the day was our server, who was friendly and smiling and remembered which of us got which sandwich and who got the iced tea, which is always a plus for me. If you need a bathroom, they will give you a key attached to a steel colander, and you will have to walk to the end of the building(s) by the parking lot, use the key to open the common door to both gender rooms, and bring them back the key. I felt a little stupid walking around, lots of businesses between the street and the parking lot, with a huge steel colander. If you're in town for a few days, give it a whirl - if you only have one day in Kona like I did (cruise ship tourist) you'll wish you made a better choice. read more

The food, atmosphere, kind wait staff remain true to all the great reviews. We did have to get there a bit early and wait in line, glad we did. The line remained active the entire time we were there. We opted for the fresh fish eggs Benedict, island style pancakes and a couple rounds of mimosas. The juice for the mimosas were all fresh and so the OJ my kiddos got. This place is busy, but every time I've been here they've handled the morning rush with calm and collectiveness. Which I appreciate. My husband and I recently moved here and we love to pick up their breakfast sandwich "drag it through the garden" on the way home from a walk. It's a great alternative to some of the heavier dishes. Croissant is good and the spinach and avocado add that pop of freshness that you need in the morning. read more

FOOD IS MEDIOCRE and OVERPRICED. I don't understand all the high reviews. Location/Ambiance - 5 stars (oceanfront, touristy area featuring live music) Service - 3.5 stars (ok, above average) Food - 2 stars Came in on a Sunday night during dinner rush for a party of 5. We were seated within minutes. My 2 younger kids have peanut and milk allergies. My son is a picky eater and it's hard finding delicious, dairy free meals. My husband ending up just splitting the steak with him and ordering a side of fries. The fries were soggy and looked like they were cooked ahead of time. The steak, although tender, had a red wine demi glace and was very bland. I ordered the a pizza and it was slightly burnt, especially underneath. The pizza didn't taste good, either. My 18/yo daughter ordered the pork bun sliders which she says were mediocre. I would not recommend this place. read more

This place had a great view for the sunset and the bartender was great. Awesome service & the drinks were fantastic. He was so personable and have us tips on what to do while on the island. Unfortunately, the food leaves much left up to desire. I got a chicken sandwich with sweet potato friess. The chix was dry and the fries were average. My partner got the ribs and they were tender but whatever seasoning was used tasted artificial. We also started with a poke starter & the fish looked and tasted kind of like jello? It surprised us. Anyway, could be what we ordered? The service was great but the food was meeeeh. read more
