Had a great breakfast experience at the Island Lava Java. We walked up to see what the wait time was like and we got lucky that a group had just cancelled their reservation so they took us right in. The service was excellent. Our waitress took care of us and was very friendly and funny. We sat in the upper balcony so we had good views of the ocean and surroundings. There is plenty of space for big groups upstairs. The food we ordered all looked great and tasted even better. I got the loco moco and it was very filling and delectable. We also ordered the ham and cheese croissant, and the burger with sweet potato fries. All excellent choices.
We had breakfast at Island Lava Java and the location alone makes it worth visiting. It's right across from the ocean, the views are beautiful, and we even got to see dolphins while we were eating, which made the experience extra special. I had the island style pancakes and they were delicious. The coconut syrup was the perfect addition, and the Portuguese sausage was also really good. My husband had the luau scramble, which was alright but felt like it was missing a little something. My brother in law ordered the loco moco and really enjoyed it. Overall, we had a nice breakfast and would definitely go back.
We came here twice. Once for breakfast and once at lunchtime. The restaurant has a beautiful ocean view. If you are able to get a table up front, you will have an unobstructed view of the Pacific ocean. Sometimes you might even be able to see some whales or a school of dolphins if you go during the right season. Our first visit was during lunch. It was around the time they were turning over their menu from breakfast/brunch to lunch and we were told that menu items would be limited or we could wait 10 more minutes while they complete the transition in the kitchen. We decided to share a pizza which was one of the no waiting option and the ahi bites. The Kona combo pizza had pepperoni, Italian sausage, olives and onions. It was large enough for the two of us to get full. The ahi bites were excellent. We had to wait for 10 more minutes to get them but they were worth the wait. The house wasibi aoili and umagi glaze were so flavorful and definitely elevated the taste of the ahi nuggets. Service was quick and friendly. Our server checked on us often enough to make sure we had drinks and that the food were delivered to our table. Our breakfast visit was the following day. Unfortunately, service was slower and our waitress was not very attentive. My husband ordered the island bagel and lox and I had the drag it through the garden croissant breakfast sandwich. While the food was good, the overall visit was like night and day from our previous experience. I'm still glad we came for breakfast though as the place does have a lot of great options as far as food went.
Stopped by for breakfast because it was across the street from our resort. Terri our server was so sweet and helpful. Never kept us waiting. We started with the French press Kona coffee which was complex and delicious. My wife loved her fresh catch Benedict I had the lava java breakfast and it was fantastic. Waffle was a little chewy was the only critique. Will definitely be coming back.
This morning was already a bit stressful because we couldn't decide where to eat, and in the end we chose this place because of the many reviews. Unfortunately, it ended up being disappointing. We ordered a vegetable omelet to share and two drinks, and the total was almost $70, which felt very overpriced for what we got. The portions were small and the food itself was nothing special. It definitely wasn't exquisite or memorable in any way. The view, however, was beautiful. We were seated on the second floor with an ocean view, and that part was truly lovely. But even with the scenery, the experience didn't feel worth the money. My husband's coffee also wasn't good at all. The waitress was polite, but the service was quite slow. Overall, the location and view are the best things about this place. Sadly, the food, drinks, and value didn't live up to the hype, and we left feeling frustrated.
We have been coming to Island Lava Java for many years now . We had a server Named Eileen who was so so sweet and attentive! Greeted us with a smile , even offered us to sign up on the app for rewards, which we had been 3 x already this visit and nobody else offered sadly ! Bagel & Lox are delicious, nice portions of Salmon , bloody Mary's are so good! Kalua pork, pineapple and eggs good also . We have never had a bad experience here , Tany is another server who is so nice and always smiling. We will miss the ocean waves and sunshine ! See you next year !
This place was recommended to us by locals so we knew we had to check it out. The view was stunning, you could see the ocean and people swimming. It was also fun to people watch as lots of shops are nearby so there are a lot of people walking around. We got the omelette, pancakes, and the eggs Benedict. The food was delicious, would order all of it again. Great ingredients, everything immaculately cooked, and generous portions. My favorite dish was the pancakes. They had a creamy sauce on top that really complimented the macadamia nuts and the bananas. It was sweet, ward, cozy and crunchy. My husband really liked his omelette, it was flavorful and perfectly cooked. The eggs Benedict was amazing because it came on a croissant which was just so extra in the nest way. The service was excellent. Servers were kind, attentive and knowledgable. I would definitely recommend this spot for a solid breakfast with a stunning view.
We had an amazing time Makamae was such a character and made our dinner so memorable. She really did a great balance of lightly offering things that helped me make a decision throughout the evening to keep the experience progressing without coming off as pushy. I felt like I could take as much time as I needed, but that she had good insight into the menu. So much fun so much good food highly highly recommend the poki and beet salad and the pono mai tais!!!
Love the outdoor porch vibe by the shore. Had a relaxing time enjoying an amazing meal with the views and sea breeze. Got to try the luau scramble and the pineapple upside down French toast. Both were unique fusion dishes that made for a fun brunch. The luau scramble uses a fried, crispy pork belly instead of bacon for protein. It's a nice thick cut with good flavor to it paired with rice and scrambled eggs. Worth trying! The pineapple upside down french toast was decadent! It really fuses the pineapple flavors into the french toast really well for a good excuse to do dessert for brunch!
So we got to Kona and I have been trying to eat healthy. That meant I needed my coffee fix. Luckily, Island Lava Java was right down the street from the condo. After working out at Planet Fitness, stopped in for a Cafe Mocha (organic espresso, chocolate syrup, steamed milk & house whipped cream). Definitely worth the visit and can't beat the views.
Huge portions! Tasted great! Tried a pancake island style which meant macadamia nuts, banana, and their unique coconut syrup. I loved it, it was so filling and delicious. Also tried their garden omelette which was fresh and packed with veggies. The potatoes were a hit, perfectly seasoned and crispy!

This is a great place for brunch. Ocean view, delicious bloody Mary's, accommodating staff. The taro tortilla fish tacos are so lovely and filling. Love the chipotle sauce on them. Try to visit during the slower times if you can. read more

I need to have a good talk with the folks giving ILJ one star because this place is a gem and our server, she was amazing having worked there for a very long time! The drinks were sooo good! We got the Big Kahuna Fish Breakfast, Straight-Up Pancake Breakfast, and "Island-Style" pancakes with sliced bananas & macadamia nuts house made coconut syrup & fresh fruit! So delicious and best pancakes ever! We had a nice table to watch the early joggers and the waves. Wonderful experience and I highly recommend! When in Kona, this is your first stop! read more

Honestly the food is good depending on what you order, ambience is good, service was great our waitress was nice and courteous, what killed the place was the hostess, this lady should not be welcoming people, she did not only reprimanded my son for being on his tablet as we walked to our table but she also threw the menu at him a five year old, who the f.. does that, than we called over a manager to get a table we had requested and rudely she refused to give us once she saw us sitting there she tried to move us and when we told her the manager had said ok for us to move she said ill talk to her she doesn't know anything, how rude can she be... aside from this rude hostess i think she said her name was kim who knows if she was lying the place has a great view in front of the beach. read more

Booked a last minute reservation for 11:45, arrived early and were seated on the first floor with a nice ocean view. Service wasn't great, waitress was rushed. Only one of us got the chance to order a drink and we had to ask for water glasses to be refilled because they sat empty. Food was delicious. The burger was one of the best I've ever had. Everyone else enjoyed their meals too. Would recommend. The view is lovely. read more

Beautiful restaurant in the heart of Kona on world famous Ali'i Drive. Extensive ocean views from anywhere in restaurant. There's a second floor as well. Enjoy their freshly baked goods like a croissant or muffin. Live Hawaiian music is usually playing as you dine and also hear the waves crash on the small retaining wall that protects roadway. A breakfast craving on vacation brought us to Island Lava Java without a reservation, and it was a solid choice. They had lots of variety and Hawaiian twists on American breakfast staples, so it was exactly what we were looking for! On a Thursday morning at around 9:30am we had about a 30 minute wait for reference. We ordered the Belgium waffle island style (with macadamia nuts, banana, and coconut syrup) and the drag it through the garden sandwich. Both were a great way to start our day! The island style was a really tasty and fun twist on a classic waffle, although we didn't love the coconut milk-esque syrup. The drag it through the garden sandwich wasn't anything super inventive, but it was a light and tasty option I'd order again! The only things I would note from my experience are 1. Parking can be challenging during peak times, and the lot behind the restaurant is not actually for Island Lava Java and 2. There seemed to be a lot of confusion around whether we were expected to mobile order or wait for wait staff (hostess said to wait, table sign said to mobile order, and the wait staff was pretty slow). Finally, their Thursday "happy hour" is pretty amazing! Happy hour is all day on Thursdays, and the drink specials have something for everyone. Many beers and wines are $5, plus they have cocktail specials too! If you plan to order drinks, I think it is worth it to try to time your visit for a Thursday!! read more

If you stay in Kona this is a great place for breakfast. Located directly across from a sea wall in the heart of the tourist area of town makes for some great views as well. My wife got a coffee and an egg/bacon/pancake breakfast while I got a croissant breakfast sandwich. The meal was around 30 bucks which has pretty much been the norm for us but the food and views were worth it. Give it a shot. read more

Prime spot for breakfast in Kona Town. My second favorite spot ;-). Had the Lava Java breakfast - 2 buttermilk pancakes, two Apple bacon strips and two eggs how you like it. It was delicious!! Very basic breakfast choices - did not disappoint. If they can get the basics right I meannnnn they can do anything right? I ordered one freshly squeezed orange + pineapple juice 12oz for $6.50USD. I know we are in Hawaii and things are pricey but fruit is plentiful on our island home so in my humble opinion I think the fresh juice options should be cheaper than the store bought options. Just my opinion cos I juice at home - it's fun, simple and inexpensive! My bestie ordered the eggs Benedict with potatoes. Their potato side is my favvv. I'm always a rice girl but not when it comes to Lava Java's side potatoes. Servers were great and very friendly, shout out to the new employee that was still learning how to work the non-iPad order taker thingy. If you're in Kona visiting you need to try this place out. I am disappointed. I expected the food to be decent due to the 4 star rating. The only appetizing part of our meal was the huli huli wings. Guava BBQ ribs was only covered in sauce to have flavor. The meat wasn't cooked long and not seasoned enough. The Big Island Pizza had an off smell of the pork and was actually bad. The lemongrass fish curry, can barely get the coconut curry taste. I wish they put more of the coconut sauce rather than the sweet chili sauce. Also the fish was overcooked. Fish and chips was also overcooked that it made the fish fry and not feeling fresh. The burgers were also charred. I can't say the food was bad due to the business of the place. I don't know what to say, it was the worse food I've had in the island so far. read more

Island Lava Java is convenient, consistent, and good! It was right down the street from where we were staying, so after we got off a 10 hour flight, all we wanted was some fish and mai tais! Island Lava Java definitely delivered. We were seated right away and really enjoyed the live music. The atmosphere was chill and everyone seemed to be enjoying their drinks/meals. We also came back another morning for breakfast and that was also a great experience. Try to make reservations, because it gets BUSY. If you don't have any luck, stop in early in the morning/afternoon and put your name down. It's a really convenient location, so you can walk along the main street or by the water while you wait. Ahi Poke -- DELICIOUS! We ended up getting it multiple times on our 4 day stay in Kona. It was flavorful and the fish literally melted in my mouth. Looking back, it was definitely one of the top pokes we had on the island. Fish Tacos -- the catch of the day was ono, which was a little too meaty for my liking but they were decent. They also offered taro tortillas, which was a fun twist. Mai Tai -- SO good! I went with our server's recommendation on this one and it was strong and reaaaally good. Luau Omelette -- this was HUGE. The sausage and potatoes were great but the omelette itself was just okay. The pork was very salty. Island Style Pancakes -- this is a must order! The pancakes were big and fluffy, and the coconut syrup and macadamia nuts are such a great add. This was also a huge portion and very shareable. Each time we went to Island Lava Java, the service was great. Everyone we interacted with was really friendly and helpful. After eating at some of other restaurants that are part of this family, it's safe to say that Island Lava Java is the best on the list. It's easy to feel the island vibe when you're here :) read more

I know most of my meals when I am in Kailua-Kona will be on the expensive side. It is a resort town, I know there is an up-charge from that and being on an island will add a little extra as well since there are shipping costs for some of the items. However, I was disappointed with our meal at Island Lava Java. The food was okay, we had a catch of the day fish and chips and a salad with shrimp as entrees. Appetizer wise we did the baked brie and calamari. The food wasn't anything special. The fish was a little dry and the calamari wasn't really crunchy at all. The salad had a dressing that left a lot to be desired but the brie dish was pretty good. However, we got a seat with a great view of the sunset and then the entrees and appetizers came out at about the exact same time with left our table full of food that was bound to get cold by the time we were going to eat it and it was hard to sit and enjoy the sunset when we felt like we were being rushed. The drinks we got were good and the bartender makes a fine cocktail but that may be the only desire I have to go back to at the restaurant. Sadly, I had my choice between a few different options there and I may have chose wrong for that dinner. Our server that night was struggling not only with the orders for food but also those drinks as he forgot to place the order for them once. In the end, you have a ton of options in Kailua-Kona for meals and while the view is pretty great, there are definitely places to give you a great bang for your buck in the food front. read more

This was our first time here. We chose it since it was close to where our old favorite, Bongo Ben's, closed down. We sat upstairs and we were seated right away. Amazing views, what a great treat to eat here while on the island. We had breakfast. Everything was exceptional, especially the service provided by Tonni (not sure if that's how you spell her name). She was very attentive to making sure we had everything we needed. I ordered Eggs Benedict & 100% Kona Coffee Cold Brew. The Hollandaise was outstanding & they serve it on poached eggs, thick slice of ham & fresh croissant. Never had it this way before, but I would definitely get it again! My hubby had Luau Scramble with Kalua Pork & Portuguese sausage. And our daughter got a cinnamon roll that is to die for-- you will not be disappointed with this place. What's good for lunch?
Fish and chips if you're on vacation. If you are leaning healthy, the Lava Java salad with the grilled shrimp. The goat cheese on that salad is fantastic!
Can you get lunch all day? For example, we would like to come for breakfast, but also pick up sandwiches to have at the beach later that day.
The entire lunch menu is NOT available all day. However, they do offer a brunch menu that includes some lunch items.

No. Breakfast is served until 11:00 and then they switch to their lunch menu.
