Great top notch service. The view alone and that ocean breeze our worth the wait. Food is delicious and portions our perfect. Be sure to reserve just in case and travel hack pay for parking at restaurants to get half off.
Pancakes were nice and fluffy. Bigger than I expected and the coconut syrup was a nice touch. Bacon could have been a little crispier but the taste was very nice. Vanilla latte was way too sweet (personally) but I did add vanilla syrup and cold foam so that's on me. Just didn't taste much of the coffee. Biscuits and gravy were delicious and the pork had amazing flavor. Waffle was a little dried out (we sent it back due to it not being crispy enough and we believe they just reheated the waffle). But the flavor was still good with the macadamia nuts and bananas The Bloody Mary was great, however, they could do with a little more spice and a little more tomato base. As far as bloody Mary's go, this was on the weaker side. Loved the Black Sea salt rim. Shoutout to our server, Terri, who was fabulous the whole time.
We've been coming to Lava Java for years and it's our favorite spot for breakfast. It has a great view of Kona's oceanfront and it's relaxing to drink your mimosa or Mocha (or both as my wife does it) and watch the boats and para-sailors. The service is very good, especially if you are upstairs when Tawny is working. I used to get the Portuguese sausage, eggs, and rice. However, I tried the hollandaise a few visits back and I have been hooked ever since. Now I get the eggs Benedict with home fries and extra sauce for the potatoes. Make sure to visit this spot when you're looking for a tasty, easy going breakfast.
Had the Ube Bliss and Island Style Belgian Waffle. The Ube Bliss was very pretty! I'm not much of a coffee person, but this was relatively light and sweet, so it was enjoyable. A slight hint of ube and the coconut cream. The waffle was good as well! The coconut cream syrup was a nice island twist. It paired well with the mac nuts and banana slices. Great! Not to mention the views of the ocean right next to us. We saw a pod of 10-20 dolphins hanging out! Great staff. Mahalo!
We had breakfast at Island Lava Java and the location alone makes it worth visiting. It's right across from the ocean, the views are beautiful, and we even got to see dolphins while we were eating, which made the experience extra special. I had the island style pancakes and they were delicious. The coconut syrup was the perfect addition, and the Portuguese sausage was also really good. My husband had the luau scramble, which was alright but felt like it was missing a little something. My brother in law ordered the loco moco and really enjoyed it. Overall, we had a nice breakfast and would definitely go back.
Definitely wouldn't recommend. The food was average, not a lot of flavor at all. They sat us a table without an umbrella, we were the only ones without when there were others empty. Worst part about this place was the server eric did something shady with the tip amount. I pressed the total amount on the hand held payment and when I saw the charge it was more.
Wife liked her French toast, the pancakes were middling at best. The gripe I have is I had to sit and listen to two ladies yap in meetings while working remotely at the table beside us. I hear enough corporate double talk and have to sit through enough useless teams meetings every day. I didn't fly all the way to Hawaii to have breakfast in the middle of one. They hadn't even purchased meals and were sitting and drinking water and disturbing the whole space. Never again.
Stopped by for breakfast because it was across the street from our resort. Terri our server was so sweet and helpful. Never kept us waiting. We started with the French press Kona coffee which was complex and delicious. My wife loved her fresh catch Benedict I had the lava java breakfast and it was fantastic. Waffle was a little chewy was the only critique. Will definitely be coming back.
We came here twice. Once for breakfast and once at lunchtime. The restaurant has a beautiful ocean view. If you are able to get a table up front, you will have an unobstructed view of the Pacific ocean. Sometimes you might even be able to see some whales or a school of dolphins if you go during the right season. Our first visit was during lunch. It was around the time they were turning over their menu from breakfast/brunch to lunch and we were told that menu items would be limited or we could wait 10 more minutes while they complete the transition in the kitchen. We decided to share a pizza which was one of the no waiting option and the ahi bites. The Kona combo pizza had pepperoni, Italian sausage, olives and onions. It was large enough for the two of us to get full. The ahi bites were excellent. We had to wait for 10 more minutes to get them but they were worth the wait. The house wasibi aoili and umagi glaze were so flavorful and definitely elevated the taste of the ahi nuggets. Service was quick and friendly. Our server checked on us often enough to make sure we had drinks and that the food were delivered to our table. Our breakfast visit was the following day. Unfortunately, service was slower and our waitress was not very attentive. My husband ordered the island bagel and lox and I had the drag it through the garden croissant breakfast sandwich. While the food was good, the overall visit was like night and day from our previous experience. I'm still glad we came for breakfast though as the place does have a lot of great options as far as food went.
This morning was already a bit stressful because we couldn't decide where to eat, and in the end we chose this place because of the many reviews. Unfortunately, it ended up being disappointing. We ordered a vegetable omelet to share and two drinks, and the total was almost $70, which felt very overpriced for what we got. The portions were small and the food itself was nothing special. It definitely wasn't exquisite or memorable in any way. The view, however, was beautiful. We were seated on the second floor with an ocean view, and that part was truly lovely. But even with the scenery, the experience didn't feel worth the money. My husband's coffee also wasn't good at all. The waitress was polite, but the service was quite slow. Overall, the location and view are the best things about this place. Sadly, the food, drinks, and value didn't live up to the hype, and we left feeling frustrated.
Had a great breakfast experience at the Island Lava Java. We walked up to see what the wait time was like and we got lucky that a group had just cancelled their reservation so they took us right in. The service was excellent. Our waitress took care of us and was very friendly and funny. We sat in the upper balcony so we had good views of the ocean and surroundings. There is plenty of space for big groups upstairs. The food we ordered all looked great and tasted even better. I got the loco moco and it was very filling and delectable. We also ordered the ham and cheese croissant, and the burger with sweet potato fries. All excellent choices.
We have been coming to Island Lava Java for many years now . We had a server Named Eileen who was so so sweet and attentive! Greeted us with a smile , even offered us to sign up on the app for rewards, which we had been 3 x already this visit and nobody else offered sadly ! Bagel & Lox are delicious, nice portions of Salmon , bloody Mary's are so good! Kalua pork, pineapple and eggs good also . We have never had a bad experience here , Tany is another server who is so nice and always smiling. We will miss the ocean waves and sunshine ! See you next year !
This place was recommended to us by locals so we knew we had to check it out. The view was stunning, you could see the ocean and people swimming. It was also fun to people watch as lots of shops are nearby so there are a lot of people walking around. We got the omelette, pancakes, and the eggs Benedict. The food was delicious, would order all of it again. Great ingredients, everything immaculately cooked, and generous portions. My favorite dish was the pancakes. They had a creamy sauce on top that really complimented the macadamia nuts and the bananas. It was sweet, ward, cozy and crunchy. My husband really liked his omelette, it was flavorful and perfectly cooked. The eggs Benedict was amazing because it came on a croissant which was just so extra in the nest way. The service was excellent. Servers were kind, attentive and knowledgable. I would definitely recommend this spot for a solid breakfast with a stunning view.

We've had breakfast and dinner here on our vacation. I only got a good picture of the French toast but we also had pancakes. For dinner fish and chips and burger were delicious. Friendly service and great location. Oh and had the Kona tini. Also delish. read more

Hands down best eggs Benedict I have ever eaten. The view is killer the beer is ice cold. Service is just how I like it not all up in my face. Cool island vibe on this review. Every time I visit Kona, Island Lava Java is a must!!! We stopped in for brunch with my friend and my daughter and it did not disappoint. The hostess was awesome as always and hooked us up with a great second-floor table with views of the water... and the power lines too, which honestly made us laugh. My daughter enjoyed a couple of mimosas and loved them, while the rest of us skipped alcohol but fell hard for their tea. It has a subtle hint of something magical and is absolutely divine. Our waitress was quick, efficient and somewhat friendly, which still got the job done just fine. I treated myself to the pineapple upside-down waffles and they were 110% delicious. Everyone loved their food, the vibe was great, and it was the perfect brunch. Only negative was the parking sign said restaurants validate but once we got inside, they only covered 50% of the parking which ended up being $20. Completely outrageous!!! If you're in the area, stop by. You won't be disappointed. read more

Lava Java this place takes "island vibes" to a whole new level. The Big Island Beet Salad was a tropical dream, with tender beets, creamy goat cheese, and avocado that'll make you believe salads can actually be exciting. The Fiery Calamari? A spicy, crispy explosion of flavor with blistered peppers and ginger aioli that'll have you hooked. And the Toscana Pizza? A true island indulgence grilled chicken, smoky bacon, and creamy garlic sauce all piled on a crispy crust. And shoutout to the waiter for making group dining a breeze. No drama, no "we can only take 3 cards," no hassle...just a simple scan of your receipt and bam, you're paid up. It was the easiest bill split Lava Java, you've got me hooked! read more

We came here on a weekday morning for some brunch and we were able to get seated fairly quickly. The restaurant wasn't busy, so it was a nice quiet breakfast. Also, can't forget the nice view of the water, it was such a beautiful treat while eating breakfast! Parking: There is a parking lot behind the restaurant, but it can be a bit confusing to navigate to. I imagine the lot would get filled, if you get there later in the day. Food: - hoku croissant sandwich: can't really mess up a cheese and egg croissant. The croissant comes warm and toasted, so if you like warm breakfast sandwiches, this is the way to go! - big kahuna fish breakfast: We loved the mahi mahi, which wasn't too salty. The potatoes were so crisp and warm, it was the best! Aileen was the best! She was so kind in helping with the confusing parking situation and how to pay. She always checked in on how everything was and if we needed anything. If you ever get her as a waitress, consider yourself lucky! I'd definitely come back to try more dishes. read more

Visited this place based on some Yelp reviews and so glad we did! The plates were good, big portions and simply delicious! The customer service was outstanding and the both times we went for breakfast were very helpful, welcoming and friendly. The ambiance was great as well! It s a restaurant right across the street from the water fantastic views of the water! The coffee was great as well! We had the French press and it was strong and bold and what we needed to get us going early on in the morning! I would highlight recommend this place for breakfast or dinner. I know for sure the breakfast is amazing! read more

I got the lava java breakfast with scrambled eggs. It was your basic breakfast. Nothing special, but still good. I secured a reservation with open table and since it was midweek, I was able to get the time slot I wanted. We sat on the second floor with a view! The breeze was nice, too. My girls enjoyed the keiki chocolate chip pancake breakfast! Delicious. Our waitress was sweet. We have a tree nut allergy in the family and I always make sure the waitress is aware. She put it in the notes and I love that places are very cautious! read more

My friend and I stopped here for our first breakfast in town not knowing what to expect but it has a great ocean view. I ordered the scrambled egg dish with mushrooms and veggies with a macadamia pesto sauce. It was amazing! Updated my side to a half papaya which was also outstanding! Had it with a delicious tropical iced tea. My friend had the 2eggs with bacon and brown rice (they were out of potatoes due to a late delivery) and a mimosa with lilikoi. It was so filling and delicious! We are planning to be back tonight to try dinner and cocktails !!!! Can't wait!!! Mahalo read more

Made reservations for 6pm. We arrived and were seated (outdoors, ocean front table) right away. We started with cocktails, followed with calamari appetizer, We watched the sunset from our table. Our main dishes were yellow Thai curry mahi mahi (flavorful but fish was over cooked for my liking); and poke bowl (nicely seasoned) with cabbage and brown rice. We finished dinner with coffee latte and decadent chocolate cake. Beautiful evening! read more
Came here on Thanksgiving Day with my family of 4 since it was one of the few places open with full service and conveniently located in Downtown Kona. I didn't have the highest expectations for the food here since it definitely seems like one of the more overrated touristy spots but it was a solid place for a family meal and I'm thankful that it wasn't too tough to get a relatively last minute reservation for a holiday dinner. My family really enjoyed the coconut shrimp (probably the best plate here tbh). We also ordered the crab cakes, lemongrass curry fresh catch, guava BBQ ribs and Thanksgiving plate which were all decent (though overall everything was a bit on the drier side and slightly lacking in flavor) but no real standouts. My biggest gripe here was the subpar service -- probably the first time I've experienced less than very friendly service out of the seven times I've visited Hawaii. We were seated at a table with barely any adjacent lighting and were struggling to see the menu. I asked our server if they had candles or portable lights available to which he tersely responded "nope". When I explained that we couldn't see the menu very well, he shrugged unapologetically and said "idk, use your phones?" I get that it sucks to work on a holiday but to be served by someone who could barely pretend to care about our dining experience and didn't even offer to reseat us at a better lit table (when there were multiple empty tables next to us) was a little disheartening on Thanksgiving Day. I probably wouldn't recommend this to anyone unless you're looking for an easy-to-reserve and reasonably priced spot with safe (albeit mid) option right to please a bigger group. Biggest pro is probably location since it's ideally situated in the heart of downtown with plenty of surrounding shoppes to browse and the front seating area which has a nice view of the ocean waves on Kailua Bay. read more

The host had a rather indifferent attitude and didn't seem interested. On top of that, the service was quite poor--it took around 20 minutes just to toast. The garden bowl was also missing key items like avocados. Overall, I was far from impressed. read more

Amazing location right across the street from the water giving most tables an incredible view. The breakfast was pretty good and the restaurant itself was nice. We did have a bit of a slow service which is not usually a bother when we can see it's busy but it was noticeable as we never got refills and we waited a lot after asking for our bill. Overall I would return and try again as we did highly enjoy the location and the breakfast. read more
This restaurant has outdoor seating right on the oceans edge. That alone makes it worth having a meal there. The service was very friendly and the food was excellent. I am recently recovering from head neck cancer treatment so it's very difficult for me to find things I can eat. I chose to get their veggie pizza and it was perfect for me to eat. The crust was soft and the vegetable toppings along with the goat cheese and olive oil were just absolutely delicious and one of the best meals I've had in a restaurant recently. read more

So if looking for bfast spot in Kona... this place had good food with lots of selection and a great view with good vibes. I got the lava Java bfast. Pancake, eggs, meat. Yum!! Wife got bene!! Went here twice in one day! Sat at the bar for brunch and then came back to sit at the bar for dinner. We like bar seats even when having Diet Coke's because you can get seated immediately and the views are pretty spectacular too! Brunch: iced coffee and grilled chicken salad for her, ahi salad niçois and Diet Coke for me. Everything was great! Dinner: personal pizzas with a cold mixed drink for each of us. Really good all around. Never felt rushed. Watched an epic sunset. Validated parking to boot! Highly recommend this wondering spot! read more
Wasn't too impressed with their food. I had the vegetarian omelette and it was not very flavorful at all. Seemed like there was no seasoning. I think they rely on the goat cheese and pesto to provide all the flavor, and it's certainly not good enough. I also got it with a fruit cup and the fruit was also subpar. Which is weird for a Hawaiian island right? Y'all can't get some good fruit? read more

I was so happy to find a vegan option. I have health issues and breakfast is a rough meal. I had the vegan breakfast and the Kona coffee with oat milk. It's rare to find oat milk, super happy. The view of the bay was gorgeous. The covered area kept us dry when it briefly rained. They validated parking, so be sure to ask. I don't remember our servers name, but she was prompt, friendly and attentive! read more

Day 2 we ate here. The views were amazing. While waiting for our table we walked towards the water and oh it was pretty. The waiter seated us at the perfect corner and we got to enjoy the food and the view. Each dish was wonderfully made and we were happy. The sauces of our meals were very complementary to the food. This place checks all the boxes. Whether you are dining in for breakfast, lunch, or dinner, you'll be hard pressed to make a bad choice from the menu. We ate here two times during our weeklong trip, once at breakfast and then another time at late lunch/early dinner time. Everything was amazing, both times. Service was especially good at breakfast, where Alyssa knocked it out of the park. During that visit, the restaurant got suddenly slammed, which delayed our food longer than she liked, and without even being prompted, she comped two of the items. She also ensured that we got "to go" coffees on our way out. The menu items we highly recommend include the cinnamon pull-apart (French bakery worthy), the Benedicts, and the smoothie. When we dined at dinner, we suggest the blackened shrimp tacos, the pizzas, or the fish and chips.... Though everything looked delicious. The ambiance was fantastic, showcasing ocean views - an awesome spot to watch the sunset. Definitely don't miss this place when you're in Kona! read more

Atmosphere? Well your literally sitting with the view of the beach, it cannot get any better than that. Service was very good, no complaints. Attentive and were always checking to make sure any refills were needed. The breakfast we ordered was great and the coffee was hot and robust. The eggs benedict were picture perfect and the waffle came out looking like something out of a food network show. Plain and simple, way better than anything at Dennys. read more

We came during a busy time but were sat quickly . Our server was nice and we got food /drinks in a timely manner. The food was awesome some of the best French toast I've had !! My only complaint was that some of the wild life (small birds ) wanted some of our food too read more

What's good for lunch?
Fish and chips if you're on vacation. If you are leaning healthy, the Lava Java salad with the grilled shrimp. The goat cheese on that salad is fantastic!
Can you get lunch all day? For example, we would like to come for breakfast, but also pick up sandwiches to have at the beach later that day.
The entire lunch menu is NOT available all day. However, they do offer a brunch menu that includes some lunch items.
What are the Ube wraps or tortillas you use, please tell me?

No. Breakfast is served until 11:00 and then they switch to their lunch menu.
