Had a great breakfast experience at the Island Lava Java. We walked up to see what the wait time was like and we got lucky that a group had just cancelled their reservation so they took us right in. The service was excellent. Our waitress took care of us and was very friendly and funny. We sat in the upper balcony so we had good views of the ocean and surroundings. There is plenty of space for big groups upstairs. The food we ordered all looked great and tasted even better. I got the loco moco and it was very filling and delectable. We also ordered the ham and cheese croissant, and the burger with sweet potato fries. All excellent choices.
We had breakfast at Island Lava Java and the location alone makes it worth visiting. It's right across from the ocean, the views are beautiful, and we even got to see dolphins while we were eating, which made the experience extra special. I had the island style pancakes and they were delicious. The coconut syrup was the perfect addition, and the Portuguese sausage was also really good. My husband had the luau scramble, which was alright but felt like it was missing a little something. My brother in law ordered the loco moco and really enjoyed it. Overall, we had a nice breakfast and would definitely go back.
We came here twice. Once for breakfast and once at lunchtime. The restaurant has a beautiful ocean view. If you are able to get a table up front, you will have an unobstructed view of the Pacific ocean. Sometimes you might even be able to see some whales or a school of dolphins if you go during the right season. Our first visit was during lunch. It was around the time they were turning over their menu from breakfast/brunch to lunch and we were told that menu items would be limited or we could wait 10 more minutes while they complete the transition in the kitchen. We decided to share a pizza which was one of the no waiting option and the ahi bites. The Kona combo pizza had pepperoni, Italian sausage, olives and onions. It was large enough for the two of us to get full. The ahi bites were excellent. We had to wait for 10 more minutes to get them but they were worth the wait. The house wasibi aoili and umagi glaze were so flavorful and definitely elevated the taste of the ahi nuggets. Service was quick and friendly. Our server checked on us often enough to make sure we had drinks and that the food were delivered to our table. Our breakfast visit was the following day. Unfortunately, service was slower and our waitress was not very attentive. My husband ordered the island bagel and lox and I had the drag it through the garden croissant breakfast sandwich. While the food was good, the overall visit was like night and day from our previous experience. I'm still glad we came for breakfast though as the place does have a lot of great options as far as food went.
Stopped by for breakfast because it was across the street from our resort. Terri our server was so sweet and helpful. Never kept us waiting. We started with the French press Kona coffee which was complex and delicious. My wife loved her fresh catch Benedict I had the lava java breakfast and it was fantastic. Waffle was a little chewy was the only critique. Will definitely be coming back.
This morning was already a bit stressful because we couldn't decide where to eat, and in the end we chose this place because of the many reviews. Unfortunately, it ended up being disappointing. We ordered a vegetable omelet to share and two drinks, and the total was almost $70, which felt very overpriced for what we got. The portions were small and the food itself was nothing special. It definitely wasn't exquisite or memorable in any way. The view, however, was beautiful. We were seated on the second floor with an ocean view, and that part was truly lovely. But even with the scenery, the experience didn't feel worth the money. My husband's coffee also wasn't good at all. The waitress was polite, but the service was quite slow. Overall, the location and view are the best things about this place. Sadly, the food, drinks, and value didn't live up to the hype, and we left feeling frustrated.
We have been coming to Island Lava Java for many years now . We had a server Named Eileen who was so so sweet and attentive! Greeted us with a smile , even offered us to sign up on the app for rewards, which we had been 3 x already this visit and nobody else offered sadly ! Bagel & Lox are delicious, nice portions of Salmon , bloody Mary's are so good! Kalua pork, pineapple and eggs good also . We have never had a bad experience here , Tany is another server who is so nice and always smiling. We will miss the ocean waves and sunshine ! See you next year !
This place was recommended to us by locals so we knew we had to check it out. The view was stunning, you could see the ocean and people swimming. It was also fun to people watch as lots of shops are nearby so there are a lot of people walking around. We got the omelette, pancakes, and the eggs Benedict. The food was delicious, would order all of it again. Great ingredients, everything immaculately cooked, and generous portions. My favorite dish was the pancakes. They had a creamy sauce on top that really complimented the macadamia nuts and the bananas. It was sweet, ward, cozy and crunchy. My husband really liked his omelette, it was flavorful and perfectly cooked. The eggs Benedict was amazing because it came on a croissant which was just so extra in the nest way. The service was excellent. Servers were kind, attentive and knowledgable. I would definitely recommend this spot for a solid breakfast with a stunning view.
We had an amazing time Makamae was such a character and made our dinner so memorable. She really did a great balance of lightly offering things that helped me make a decision throughout the evening to keep the experience progressing without coming off as pushy. I felt like I could take as much time as I needed, but that she had good insight into the menu. So much fun so much good food highly highly recommend the poki and beet salad and the pono mai tais!!!
Love the outdoor porch vibe by the shore. Had a relaxing time enjoying an amazing meal with the views and sea breeze. Got to try the luau scramble and the pineapple upside down French toast. Both were unique fusion dishes that made for a fun brunch. The luau scramble uses a fried, crispy pork belly instead of bacon for protein. It's a nice thick cut with good flavor to it paired with rice and scrambled eggs. Worth trying! The pineapple upside down french toast was decadent! It really fuses the pineapple flavors into the french toast really well for a good excuse to do dessert for brunch!
So we got to Kona and I have been trying to eat healthy. That meant I needed my coffee fix. Luckily, Island Lava Java was right down the street from the condo. After working out at Planet Fitness, stopped in for a Cafe Mocha (organic espresso, chocolate syrup, steamed milk & house whipped cream). Definitely worth the visit and can't beat the views.
Huge portions! Tasted great! Tried a pancake island style which meant macadamia nuts, banana, and their unique coconut syrup. I loved it, it was so filling and delicious. Also tried their garden omelette which was fresh and packed with veggies. The potatoes were a hit, perfectly seasoned and crispy!
We came here on a weekday morning for some brunch and we were able to get seated fairly quickly. The restaurant wasn't busy, so it was a nice quiet breakfast. Also, can't forget the nice view of the water, it was such a beautiful treat while eating breakfast! Parking: There is a parking lot behind the restaurant, but it can be a bit confusing to navigate to. I imagine the lot would get filled, if you get there later in the day. Food: - hoku croissant sandwich: can't really mess up a cheese and egg croissant. The croissant comes warm and toasted, so if you like warm breakfast sandwiches, this is the way to go! - big kahuna fish breakfast: We loved the mahi mahi, which wasn't too salty. The potatoes were so crisp and warm, it was the best! Aileen was the best! She was so kind in helping with the confusing parking situation and how to pay. She always checked in on how everything was and if we needed anything. If you ever get her as a waitress, consider yourself lucky! I'd definitely come back to try more dishes. read more

The host had a rather indifferent attitude and didn't seem interested. On top of that, the service was quite poor--it took around 20 minutes just to toast. The garden bowl was also missing key items like avocados. Overall, I was far from impressed. read more
This restaurant has outdoor seating right on the oceans edge. That alone makes it worth having a meal there. The service was very friendly and the food was excellent. I am recently recovering from head neck cancer treatment so it's very difficult for me to find things I can eat. I chose to get their veggie pizza and it was perfect for me to eat. The crust was soft and the vegetable toppings along with the goat cheese and olive oil were just absolutely delicious and one of the best meals I've had in a restaurant recently. read more
Visited this place based on some Yelp reviews and so glad we did! The plates were good, big portions and simply delicious! The customer service was outstanding and the both times we went for breakfast were very helpful, welcoming and friendly. The ambiance was great as well! It s a restaurant right across the street from the water fantastic views of the water! The coffee was great as well! We had the French press and it was strong and bold and what we needed to get us going early on in the morning! I would highlight recommend this place for breakfast or dinner. Day 2 we ate here. The views were amazing. While waiting for our table we walked towards the water and oh it was pretty. The waiter seated us at the perfect corner and we got to enjoy the food and the view. Each dish was wonderfully made and we were happy. The sauces of our meals were very complementary to the food. I got the lava java breakfast with scrambled eggs. It was your basic breakfast. Nothing special, but still good. I secured a reservation with open table and since it was midweek, I was able to get the time slot I wanted. We sat on the second floor with a view! The breeze was nice, too. My girls enjoyed the keiki chocolate chip pancake breakfast! Delicious. Our waitress was sweet. We have a tree nut allergy in the family and I always make sure the waitress is aware. She put it in the notes and I love that places are very cautious! read more

Made reservations for 6pm. We arrived and were seated (outdoors, ocean front table) right away. We started with cocktails, followed with calamari appetizer, We watched the sunset from our table. Our main dishes were yellow Thai curry mahi mahi (flavorful but fish was over cooked for my liking); and poke bowl (nicely seasoned) with cabbage and brown rice. Came here on Thanksgiving Day with my family of 4 since it was one of the few places open with full service and conveniently located in Downtown Kona. I didn't have the highest expectations for the food here since it definitely seems like one of the more overrated touristy spots but it was a solid place for a family meal and I'm thankful that it wasn't too tough to get a relatively last minute reservation for a holiday dinner. My family really enjoyed the coconut shrimp (probably the best plate here tbh). We also ordered the crab cakes, lemongrass curry fresh catch, guava BBQ ribs and Thanksgiving plate which were all decent (though overall everything was a bit on the drier side and slightly lacking in flavor) but no real standouts. My biggest gripe here was the subpar service -- probably the first time I've experienced less than very friendly service out of the seven times I've visited Hawaii. We were seated at a table with barely any adjacent lighting and were struggling to see the menu. I asked our server if they had candles or portable lights available to which he tersely responded "nope". When I explained that we couldn't see the menu very well, he shrugged unapologetically and said "idk, use your phones?" I get that it sucks to work on a holiday but to be served by someone who could barely pretend to care about our dining experience and didn't even offer to reseat us at a better lit table (when there were multiple empty tables next to us) was a little disheartening on Thanksgiving Day. I probably wouldn't recommend this to anyone unless you're looking for an easy-to-reserve and reasonably priced spot with safe (albeit mid) option right to please a bigger group. Biggest pro is probably location since it's ideally situated in the heart of downtown with plenty of surrounding shoppes to browse and the front seating area which has a nice view of the ocean waves on Kailua Bay. read more

Amazing location right across the street from the water giving most tables an incredible view. The breakfast was pretty good and the restaurant itself was nice. We did have a bit of a slow service which is not usually a bother when we can see it's busy but it was noticeable as we never got refills and we waited a lot after asking for our bill. Overall I would return and try again as we did highly enjoy the location and the breakfast. read more

Went here twice in one day! Sat at the bar for brunch and then came back to sit at the bar for dinner. We like bar seats even when having Diet Coke's because you can get seated immediately and the views are pretty spectacular too! Brunch: iced coffee and grilled chicken salad for her, ahi salad niçois and Diet Coke for me. Everything was great! Dinner: personal pizzas with a cold mixed drink for each of us. Really good all around. Never felt rushed. Watched an epic sunset. Validated parking to boot! Highly recommend this wondering spot! read more

I was so happy to find a vegan option. I have health issues and breakfast is a rough meal. I had the vegan breakfast and the Kona coffee with oat milk. It's rare to find oat milk, super happy. The view of the bay was gorgeous. The covered area kept us dry when it briefly rained. They validated parking, so be sure to ask. This place checks all the boxes. Whether you are dining in for breakfast, lunch, or dinner, you'll be hard pressed to make a bad choice from the menu. We ate here two times during our weeklong trip, once at breakfast and then another time at late lunch/early dinner time. Everything was amazing, both times. Service was especially good at breakfast, where Alyssa knocked it out of the park. During that visit, the restaurant got suddenly slammed, which delayed our food longer than she liked, and without even being prompted, she comped two of the items. She also ensured that we got "to go" coffees on our way out. The menu items we highly recommend include the cinnamon pull-apart (French bakery worthy), the Benedicts, and the smoothie. When we dined at dinner, we suggest the blackened shrimp tacos, the pizzas, or the fish and chips.... Though everything looked delicious. The ambiance was fantastic, showcasing ocean views - an awesome spot to watch the sunset. Definitely don't miss this place when you're in Kona! read more

Atmosphere? Well your literally sitting with the view of the beach, it cannot get any better than that. Service was very good, no complaints. Attentive and were always checking to make sure any refills were needed. The breakfast we ordered was great and the coffee was hot and robust. The eggs benedict were picture perfect and the waffle came out looking like something out of a food network show. Plain and simple, way better than anything at Dennys. read more

We came during a busy time but were sat quickly . Our server was nice and we got food /drinks in a timely manner. The food was awesome some of the best French toast I've had !! My only complaint was that some of the wild life (small birds ) wanted some of our food too read more

I kinda forgot to take pics of the food! I was so busy and in a rush to eat! The restaurant is so cute! It has a beautiful view of the ocean, great vibes! Love love love the view! The mimosas were delicious! We had the lilikoi mimosa yummm. We made a reservation and they seated us early! Win! Off of the breakfast plate I will say the pancakes were HUGE I could not finish, the potatoes were the best part! So seasoned! Highly recommend! read more

Saw this place on DDD and had to check it out. The croissant sandwich was good but small and didn't come with any side potatoes, veg or fruit. The island style pancakes were about average, wish there was macadamia in the actual pancake not just on top. Side of fruit consisted of cut melons, grapes and old strawberries you would expect at any continental breakfast in the continental US - I was hoping for some fresh tropical fruit! Located in a cute shopping center in a busy area of Kona. Make sure u get a reservation so u can sit on the edge with the ocean view. Service was a bit slow, you could tell the one server was dealing with the entire upstairs patio so she was over-extended, but she was very friendly at least. read more

Complete tourist trap. The only thing that was decent was the coconut shrimp. Everything else was subpar. The mahi mahi fish tacos were the driest fish tacos i've ever had. It came out cold, overcooked, and dry. The fries that came with it were also cold (not luke warm, just plain cold). The poke lacked in flavor and fell flat. The burger looked unappetizing, on par with a fast food joint. read more

Back to Lava Java, this time for breakfast. We were able to find parking in the free lot in the back so we didn't have to hassle with the down town paid parking fiasco, $6 cups of coffee but they were really good and endless. The Island Benedict was excellent with perfectly poached eggs, seasoned potatoes and fancy ham on a croissant. Hubs got the Lavender Java breakfast, and he very nearly finished it. Service was prompt and thoughtful. I felt our server was really trying to make sure everything was perfect for us and she did a great job. Ambiance is comfy and we got a table on the waterfront right when they opened at 7am. Really great! read more

We ate here on a Monday morning around 10 and just beat the crowd. I did reservations ahead of time but I think we could've easily walked in. The hostess was wonderful and sat up front for the perfect seaside view. Food: Everything was delicious! They were out of the pineapple upside down French toast, so I ordered the banana and macadamia nut pancakes. What makes them so delicious is the coconut syrup. It was so good I asked for extra to go. The portions are also large. I could've shared my plate. Service: From the hostess to the wait staff, everyone was friendly and thoughtful. Our water glasses were constantly refilled and were frequently checked on even as the restaurant got busier. Parking is also validated. I recommend doing it right after being seated. The wait staff can tell you how. read more

My hubby and I came here for our first breakfast on the Island. Delicious! I had the veggie scramble and he had luau scramble whilst sharing local Kona French press coffee . Lovely open air place with views of the ocean and sweet, wild little birds checking you out. We were fantastically taken care of by Duke- many mahalos! read more

Pleasant open air bistro by the downtown Kona waterfront. Service was good and food was a decent range of choices for departure day breakfast.. complimentary public parking validation in back makes this and other restaurants on this stretch easy good choices.. read more
I was here for breakfast before and it was pretty good, so decided to stop here for dinner. Great island ambiance, downstairs with live music and upstairs, beautiful sunset view. Very friendly server too! Kanaka fries was interesting. Mount of fries with sweet savory and wasabi sauce with sesame seeds...Mmmm... Wasabi lover will really like this dish. Ono fish & chips - soft and fresh Ono was sweet and tender. My chicken sandwich was okay, I wish I ordered fish & chips though. Also ask for today's special drink! Quick and friendly service on a bomb beach front restaurant. The blackened shrimp tacos with house chipotle sauce and fresh fries were amazing! And very popular. The luau scramble with pork and pineapple was unique and also bomb, just wish there was more pork! Drinks were yummy and not strong at all- the hibiscus lemonade came w a candied hibiscus... I could eat a whole bbq stick of just that hahaha read more

What's good for lunch?
Fish and chips if you're on vacation. If you are leaning healthy, the Lava Java salad with the grilled shrimp. The goat cheese on that salad is fantastic!
Can you get lunch all day? For example, we would like to come for breakfast, but also pick up sandwiches to have at the beach later that day.
The entire lunch menu is NOT available all day. However, they do offer a brunch menu that includes some lunch items.

No. Breakfast is served until 11:00 and then they switch to their lunch menu.
