Been coming to Kona now every month for about 2 years. Each morning starts with a swim with the pier swimmers followed by breakfast at the Java Lava. So far, I have yet to have any sort of negative experience whatsoever. The food is always good, the coffee is tasty, and the staff is always super friendly! Nothing beats an early morning swim and then a wonderful breakfast as you look out to the ocean and listen to the waves crash just across the street. It's one of my favorite parts of my business travel, and so far it's been great!
Great location and view of the ocean while dining. Plenty of options for breaks, lunch, and dinner. Expect a wait on the weekends if you're not there early. Overall worth checking out for a quick bite and drink along the ocean.
Pancakes were nice and fluffy. Bigger than I expected and the coconut syrup was a nice touch. Bacon could have been a little crispier but the taste was very nice. Vanilla latte was way too sweet (personally) but I did add vanilla syrup and cold foam so that's on me. Just didn't taste much of the coffee. Biscuits and gravy were delicious and the pork had amazing flavor. Waffle was a little dried out (we sent it back due to it not being crispy enough and we believe they just reheated the waffle). But the flavor was still good with the macadamia nuts and bananas The Bloody Mary was great, however, they could do with a little more spice and a little more tomato base. As far as bloody Mary's go, this was on the weaker side. Loved the Black Sea salt rim. Shoutout to our server, Terri, who was fabulous the whole time.
Had the Ube Bliss and Island Style Belgian Waffle. The Ube Bliss was very pretty! I'm not much of a coffee person, but this was relatively light and sweet, so it was enjoyable. A slight hint of ube and the coconut cream. The waffle was good as well! The coconut cream syrup was a nice island twist. It paired well with the mac nuts and banana slices. Great! Not to mention the views of the ocean right next to us. We saw a pod of 10-20 dolphins hanging out! Great staff. Mahalo!
Two years later so we figured we'd give it a try again, this time for lunch We had the fish sandwich and the smashburger The burger was fine. We ordered green salad as the sides and they were really good . Mixed greens, no iceberg, served with a tasty balsamic vinaigrette. The fish sandwich wasn't great. We' chose the seared ahi. It was cooked completely through, which was probably a good thing because it was FAR from fresh--extremely "fishy." We've had a lot of ahi that past two weeks and this was the worst. Service was friendly and prompt, although it was clear we arrived at the end of our server's shift. We' were handed the check when we were nowhere near finished with our sandwiches. This wasn't a huge issue for us, but some people might feel put off by that. Cleanliness was still an issue--the tables really be a good deep cleaning. You can't beat the view! There was construction right out front this time (not the restaurant's fault)) but at least it was interesting
We've been coming to Lava Java for years and it's our favorite spot for breakfast. It has a great view of Kona's oceanfront and it's relaxing to drink your mimosa or Mocha (or both as my wife does it) and watch the boats and para-sailors. The service is very good, especially if you are upstairs when Tawny is working. I used to get the Portuguese sausage, eggs, and rice. However, I tried the hollandaise a few visits back and I have been hooked ever since. Now I get the eggs Benedict with home fries and extra sauce for the potatoes. Make sure to visit this spot when you're looking for a tasty, easy going breakfast.
Very good service and a quality breakfast. The fresh fish Benedict and the island style waffles were very good and there is a great view. Coffees were decent but the highlight was definitely the food.
We had breakfast at Island Lava Java and the location alone makes it worth visiting. It's right across from the ocean, the views are beautiful, and we even got to see dolphins while we were eating, which made the experience extra special. I had the island style pancakes and they were delicious. The coconut syrup was the perfect addition, and the Portuguese sausage was also really good. My husband had the luau scramble, which was alright but felt like it was missing a little something. My brother in law ordered the loco moco and really enjoyed it. Overall, we had a nice breakfast and would definitely go back.
Stopped by for breakfast because it was across the street from our resort. Terri our server was so sweet and helpful. Never kept us waiting. We started with the French press Kona coffee which was complex and delicious. My wife loved her fresh catch Benedict I had the lava java breakfast and it was fantastic. Waffle was a little chewy was the only critique. Will definitely be coming back.
This morning was already a bit stressful because we couldn't decide where to eat, and in the end we chose this place because of the many reviews. Unfortunately, it ended up being disappointing. We ordered a vegetable omelet to share and two drinks, and the total was almost $70, which felt very overpriced for what we got. The portions were small and the food itself was nothing special. It definitely wasn't exquisite or memorable in any way. The view, however, was beautiful. We were seated on the second floor with an ocean view, and that part was truly lovely. But even with the scenery, the experience didn't feel worth the money. My husband's coffee also wasn't good at all. The waitress was polite, but the service was quite slow. Overall, the location and view are the best things about this place. Sadly, the food, drinks, and value didn't live up to the hype, and we left feeling frustrated.
We came here twice. Once for breakfast and once at lunchtime. The restaurant has a beautiful ocean view. If you are able to get a table up front, you will have an unobstructed view of the Pacific ocean. Sometimes you might even be able to see some whales or a school of dolphins if you go during the right season. Our first visit was during lunch. It was around the time they were turning over their menu from breakfast/brunch to lunch and we were told that menu items would be limited or we could wait 10 more minutes while they complete the transition in the kitchen. We decided to share a pizza which was one of the no waiting option and the ahi bites. The Kona combo pizza had pepperoni, Italian sausage, olives and onions. It was large enough for the two of us to get full. The ahi bites were excellent. We had to wait for 10 more minutes to get them but they were worth the wait. The house wasibi aoili and umagi glaze were so flavorful and definitely elevated the taste of the ahi nuggets. Service was quick and friendly. Our server checked on us often enough to make sure we had drinks and that the food were delivered to our table. Our breakfast visit was the following day. Unfortunately, service was slower and our waitress was not very attentive. My husband ordered the island bagel and lox and I had the drag it through the garden croissant breakfast sandwich. While the food was good, the overall visit was like night and day from our previous experience. I'm still glad we came for breakfast though as the place does have a lot of great options as far as food went.
Definitely wouldn't recommend. The food was average, not a lot of flavor at all. They sat us a table without an umbrella, we were the only ones without when there were others empty. Worst part about this place was the server eric did something shady with the tip amount. I pressed the total amount on the hand held payment and when I saw the charge it was more.
Wife liked her French toast, the pancakes were middling at best. The gripe I have is I had to sit and listen to two ladies yap in meetings while working remotely at the table beside us. I hear enough corporate double talk and have to sit through enough useless teams meetings every day. I didn't fly all the way to Hawaii to have breakfast in the middle of one. They hadn't even purchased meals and were sitting and drinking water and disturbing the whole space. Never again.
Made a reservation for brunch less than an hour before actually going. Wasn't as busy as I thought it'd be. Went alone and loved that they put me upstairs in a quiet corner to enjoy my alone time with a great view. Unfortunately wasn't able to try their cinnamon roll, but was ensured their pull apart was simply quite alike. Loved the sugar, the size was so big, and the insides were warm to the touch. A good sweet to start! The ice tea did not taste like lillikoi, but was a good subtle simple tea. Comes unsweetened so glad they brought me sugars. Lox bagel was good, great equality of cream cheese to salmon to onions. Ordered without capers on mine. Nice views, nice workers, and nice bathroom... enjoyed my brunch! Wanted to eat at another place nearby but they were closed so we ended up at Island Lava Java. The view along the waterfront is nice and it's a great location but the food was Americanized and pricey. Everything was cooked well but the food was simple and not authentic local "Hawaii" food which I was hoping to eat. I got the fish tacos which were cooked ok but it left me desiring something more. A couple friends got the poke which didn't have much flavor either. Another friend got calamari and a burger which he liked but there was nothing special about it. Service was ok but was impersonal when they have you order and pay online. With so many other great places to eat, I would choose somewhere else rather than return here again. read more

I really wanted to enjoy this place since my friend recommended it as a nice breakfast place by the waters, but I was very disappointed by the service that was provided. Food- They offer a variety of breakfast dishes, such as basic breakfast platters, eggs Benedict, omelettes, pancakes/waffles, breakfast sandwiches, bagels, and fresh fruit. We got the luau omelette and the roasted veggie omelette. The luau omelette was pretty brand. I enjoyed the roasted veggie omelette- there was a good variety of veggies and the flavors of the pesto and goat cheese blended well together. Overall, food was okay but the service was very disappointing. read more

Stopped by here before we caught the plane to head back to san Jose. It was great to find a parking lot in the back. The hostess asked if we had reservations. Nope. But she was able to seat us right away. I really wanted macadamia pancakes but the table next to us had a huge plate of two pancakes. I asked the waitress if I could ordered only one. Every visit to Kona we end up at Island Lava Java at multiple times, especially for breakfast/brunch. Such a great menu, welcoming staff and gorgeous setting. The food is consistently good, well played, fresh ingredients and the mimosas hit the spot! I like the option for a reservation as most places in that area don't offer that. read more

Loved the ambiance, and although it took a while to receive our food at the bar, the server was friendly. My husband and I ordered the pancakes, and I opted to have mine island style. I wish the add on cost for Island style was actually listed on the menu as the original pancakes were $12. The island style just added banana, macnut, and coconut cream for an additional $6, bringing it to $17.95. While you do pay a premium here in HI, I expected more for that price. The pancakes were tough and overcooked, as were the sausages. You can definitely find better options in the area for that price range. There also didn't appear to be any non alcoholic iced tea or drink options besides soda and juice, and there were no prices listed on the cocktails. read more

Island Lava Java was my favorite breakfast for my two week trip to hawaii. Located in the heart of Kona with a beautiful ocean view. Went for breakfast around 10am and we were seated right away despite not having reservations. The hostess was thoughtful and sat us where we get a perfect view of the ocean without us having to ask. Our server was sweet and attentive. I ordered the luau scramble which had kalua pork and pineapple - very unique dish and tasty. My friend ordered the egg benedict. For dessert we tried the cinnamon pull apart. Yum! Island Lava Java will definitely be the go-to breakfast spot when Im in kona! read more

Great breakfast spot on the Kona strip! Seating is gorgeous with the beach front views. Staff is extremely welcoming and warm! You have ample parking at the backside of the complex. Food is delicious and the proportions are gracious. You can substitute the meat for fruit. Loved the skillet potatoes, they were perfectly charred and cooked. Waffle was delicious too. The Kona coffee press was quite satisfying as well. Only downside here is that they don't have any gluten free bread options. Also this is a typical American breakfast kinda place. Other than tropical fruit options don't expect any Hawaii an breakfast options as such. This one of the best breakfast places in the Kona area! They have a decent coffee selection here too. Alyzabeth waited on us today from the bar, she's cool. Ordered the cinnamon roll, island lava Java salad, full order, island eggs Benedict with fresh cooked fish and a roasted veggie bowl with blackened Ono fish and a fresh OJ. The cinnamon roll is big, fills the entire plate. It was baked this morning, but rather dense and not as billowy as I like. Our bartender nuked it some to soften it up some. Even heated the outside of the roll doesn't do it for me, it's too crusty. The inside of the roll isn't bad though, flavorful too. Enjoying the live island music at the restaurants along the water. Helps to get you into the island feel for sure. The lava Java salad isn't bad, light dressing and leafy green is quite refreshing. The goat cheese is super fluffy. The chopped macadamia are a nice and what I would expect here instead of Marconi almonds or almonds. Love seeing bib lettuce in my salads, they are so soft and buttery. The ono fish eggs Benedict was good. Eggs were cooked over hard. The OJ is ok, not super sweet. The ones being squeezed for the bottle has a richer orange color for sure. The veggie bowl is okay, the veggies are rather sweet. The ono fish isn't my favorite so much, it's not a light fish and not flaky, it's more dense and heavy like a swordfish. The rice is at the bottom. It's a nice spot for a meal during the day or at night too. read more

Good things come from unexpected places. I thought this would be a typical touristy place down by the waters edge with great views but so-so food. What a nice surprise to find great views, food and service all in the same location! A total trifecta of happiness! The French toast and eggs were some of the best I have had in awhile, with applewood smoked bacon to boot! There must have been a half dozen eggs in my scramble, or at least he very healthy ostrich egg. I couldn't finish it all, but in my defense I started with the cinnamon roll which was so sticky sweet that I almost needed a side of insulin. The wife had the eggs Benedict on a croissant which she said was she enjoyed but the eggs were a bit over poached. Overall we had a nice brunch here and will definitely bookmark it as a place worthy of going to again on our next visit. read more

Island Lava Java was so good that my family and I had to come back, and we usually don't eat twice at the same spot during a trip. We came in for brunch the first time then returned for dinner a few days later. The restaurant has the best vibes, it's on the beach and the staff were kind and helpful. The wait wasn't too long to get seated on a Saturday morning, similarly to when we came back for dinner. The quality of the food is excellent! We had some waffles and croissant sandwiches with drinks and everything went well together. For dinner I had the mahi mahi tacos and they were so flavorful and fresh; best fish tacos I've ever had. Both times it was just an explosion of paradise in my mouth. Every time I think of Hawaii, this spot is one of the top places that come into mind. I wish we had one in Houston, I'd be there everyday. We came here for breakfast. I had made a reservation online, so we were seated right way. We were seated upstairs and the view was fantastic. Our waitress greeted us right away. She had a fun personality, which made our dining experience really enjoyable. The food and drinks of course were very good. Visited this restaurant with my husband on a Friday afternoon and were seated immediately. Our server was very friendly and helpful. Our food came out super fast and was sooo good! I got the Lemongrass Curry with Mahi Mahi and my husband got the veggie bowl and added chicken with a side of sweet potato fries. The only thing that I could "complain" about is that the portion size of the entrees was a little on the small side so if you're a big eater you may need appetizers to fill you up. The restaurant is very close to the water and has a pretty view though it's somewhat blocked by power lines. There's a free parking lot directly behind the restaurant, Google maps just took us right past the front and we had to look around for the lot. read more

This place was perfection 2 years ago. The food is still really good, but the service quality went way down. Our original plan was to dine in twice this week like we did last time we visited, but we ended up getting our food to-go the second time to avoid the bad service. Which is sad because the location/ambiance is fun. The busboy was super nice though. Breakfast was so delicious here that we came twice during our 1 week stay on the Big Island and ordered the exact same dishes! It's a beautiful space, open air with live music and friendly service. Some tables can get more sun than others but the second floor usually stays pretty shaded. I highly recommend the drag it through the garden croissant sandwich! The croissant is flaky and buttery and all the included ingredients are really great quality and delicious!! The island style pancakes are great as well - big portions, fair pricing and the added bananas, Mac nuts and syrup are amazing. Coffee is good and if there's a wait (there usually is), you can get coffee and bakery items to go (try the giant cinnamon bun!). read more

We went for Valentine's Day dinner (did make a reservation)! We were seated on the top level which had a beautiful ocean view, but the power lines are unfortunately right in front of your eyes. Service was a little slow, but there appeared to be only one server, and she was dealing with a fair amount of people. It was fine to wait a little and relax! Food was excellent. We started with the Guava Ribs which were featured on Triple D, and I had the Veggie Bowl with chicken which was delicious!! If you're looking for a solid breakfast spot in the area, this is probably the place to go! There's parking in the back which makes it pretty convenient. The portions here are massive so they'll definitely fill you up! I ordered the Lava Java Breakfast - Island Style and my husband ordered the Luau Scramble. The Portuguese sausage was delicious and the Island-Style pancakes were sooo good. I loved their coconut syrup and it was loaded with bananas and macadamia nuts. Their Luau Scramble was really good too with roasted kalua pork and grilled pineapple. A bonus is the nice view of the beach since it's right next to the water! read more

Walking down one of the main drags in Kona, we walked past the sandwich sign and decided to detour here. We lucked out, there was no wait for our party of 3. We settled for high top seating and were handed menus. This is one of many places featured on Diners, Drive-Ins, and Dives. My family and I all ordered a round of drinks and placed our entree order. I settled on the guava bbq ribs, recommended by Guy Fieri. My sister ordered the roasted veggie pizza and my niece ordered tacos. Our food arrived within 20min. Upon first glance, it all looked amazing and mouth watering. Overall, my ribs were flavorful but the meat not as tender as I would like. The pizza was okay, lacked flavor and crunch. I heard the ribs were phenomenal and that Guy Fieri showed them on DDD. Luckily I only ordered the appetizer size, because they were awful. The sauce was nothing special and there was barely any meat on the ribs. For the meat that there was, it was so hard to get off the bone and it seemed so dry. The meat is supposed to fall off the bone since it was supposed to be cooked sous-vide for 18 hours. Luckily I got a side salad too because that was all I ate, and it was decent. read more

It's rare for me to write a poor review but hoping this serves as a helpful critique. Service was good. Lots of ample seating. We dined in the evening, so we missed seeing the view but it's right along the water so I'm sure it's pretty. We ordered the grilled fish sandwich, beet salad, smash burger, and the highly recommended Mac crusted catch of the day. Here are pros/cons of each. Fish sandwich: tasty and the top dish of our order, but came with a lot of burnt sweet potato fries. Beet salad advertised oven roasted beets and avocado. Avocado was forgotten and the beets were not oven roasted but rather tasted like regular canned beets. Smash burger advertises two smash patties but the burger we were served came with one regular old, round patty. Mac crusted fish advertises a pineapple sauce and although there was a small amount of something on the rice, it tasted like nothing rice included. No hint of pineapple at all. The plate was also served half cold. You could tell they plated the rice scoop and broccoli then waited for the fish to cook which resulted in a cold plate of food. Unfortunately, this was the worst meal of our trip and I wish it lived up to its overall rating. So much so that aside from walking by, sadly we won't be giving it another try. read more

Reservations can make on OpenTable or their website. Recommended because usually there's some wait but came at 4:30pm on a cruise day and got a table easily. View great View of Kailua Bay from most tables. Prefer 1st floor's view because 2nd floor has view of the the street wires as well. Coffee website says they serves 100% extra fancy Kona coffee (not cheap at all so they charge for refill). Food 1. Locally Sourced Ingredients: beef, lamb, chicken, lettuce, produce, goat cheese, etc 2. Made from Scratch on Premises: dishes, breads, doughs, pastries, muffins, desserts, cocktails, juices Ahi Poke tuna, shoyu, sesame oil, fresh ogo (crispy purple seaweed), scallion, sesame seed, wasabi aioli, micro greens, furitake MP turned out to be $13.50. 3.5* Kono Combo Pizza pepperoni, Italian sausage, black olive, onion, red sauce & moz. Soft bready crust with lots of cheese $23. 3.5* Guava BBQ Ribs very tender ribs with light bbq sauce topped with minced tropical salsa with some pineapple, Island slaw with mainly carrots (as featured on DDD). Chose side of sweet potatoes fries instead of fries & they were crispy and excellent $30. 4.5* Shrimp Carbonara fettuccini tossed with egg & Parmesan cheese. Needed fuel before heading to the beach and was drawn to this place based on reviews. My husband got the island eggs Benedict. This was different than all Benedict's because they use a croissant instead of English muffin! The croissant was flakey and the potatoes were crisp to perfection. I went with the Belgian waffle breakfast which had a good balance of sweet and savory. Overall great service and ambiance! read more

First breakfast on the island! Service is five star, drinks are up there too but my luau omelette was lacking. Eggs folder over the diced and combined listed ingredients, not a lot of flavor despite the combo sounding delicious! I would go again for sure and try something different! Everyone else enjoyed their food. You order through the QR code and it's a seamless process. Individual menus are listed. The view from the upper deck is lovely and it's fun to people watch. We had ordered mai tais off of the normal menu and because it was happy hour Thursday they were a much better price - so the bartender walked upstairs to our table to tell us that and corrected our bill for us! What's good for lunch?
Fish and chips if you're on vacation. If you are leaning healthy, the Lava Java salad with the grilled shrimp. The goat cheese on that salad is fantastic!
Can you get lunch all day? For example, we would like to come for breakfast, but also pick up sandwiches to have at the beach later that day.
The entire lunch menu is NOT available all day. However, they do offer a brunch menu that includes some lunch items.
What are the Ube wraps or tortillas you use, please tell me?

No. Breakfast is served until 11:00 and then they switch to their lunch menu.
