Our server Phil was rude and racist. Treated us very poorly and the service was terrible. He said that even if his service was better, our tip wouldn't have changed. After many referrals to Island Lava Java via people we met, island guides, blogs, etc. we had to check it out. The spot is incredible and we came just in time for sunset and grabbed two seats at the bar. From the start we were greeted with indifference from Corinna M. We asked a few questions about the daily catch and she explained that happy hour was happening and we would receive 25% off of our food. We ordered, received the dishes but continued to get a really nasty vibe from her. I also saw her attitude with other people walking into the establishment and there was a clear line on how tourists vs locals were received at her bar. Whatever, the food was decent and we were having a good time until we received our bill and did not see the happy hour discount, so we politely inquired and were answered with - "oh, I didn't punch your order in until 5:33 so, you missed the happy hour pricing". I tried to ask about what happened and could she adjust the bill because we clearly ordered well before 5:30 but was met with the most rude, condescending attitude I have ever experienced in my 40+years of dining out. It clearly brought her so much joy to have a little bit of control and let us know we were most unwelcome. So, in conclusion, I would not recommend this establishment and would try some of their neighbors who will give you a fun, welcoming dining experience. read more

This was the last place I stopped for breakfast before leaving, and I'm sad that it took me as long as it did to try it. For breakfast I had bread pudding French toast. I don't know who thought of turning bread pudding into French toast, but they deserve a medal! The cucumber-ginger juice would have been good, but it wasn't cold enough. Something as crisp and refreshing as that needed to be chilled a bit more. When I go back to the big island, I'll be going back here for breakfast. read more

You sit outside and enjoy huge portions of some very yummy food, some of it even "healthy" style, but all of it has always been soooooo ono! Their service were pretty much attentive and friendly:) all of my family got omelette and potatoes with Portuguese sausage or Bacon but i got a berry waffle for my self. If you're looking for the best fish egg benedict or kalua pork this is the place for you! Ask to be seated on the top floor, you get a nice view of the ocean and a nice breeze. My daughter's meal came with fresh tropical fruit and I was very surprised to see dragon fruit! It was a very nice surprise. They had a comfortable high chair and crayon for little ones to color and be busy while parents can get their grub on. Our fish (ono) egg benedict and kalua pork omelette was so delicious! The egg benedict sat on a toasted croissant, which was very clever. The kalua pork was perfect (my husband thought it was a little on the saltier side). Overall my experience was great, but I'm only giving 3 stars due to the fact that I expect a much better cup of coffee from a restaurant calling itself Lava Java. That being said, the food was delicious. I ordered the Eggs Benedict and the eggs and hollandaise were cooked perfectly, the view is incredible and the staff was friendly. Would I come back? Parking is a hassle - we were lucky enough to find parking in the lot behind the restaurant. Otherwise, the main street (Ali'i) is choked with traffic and pedestrians. The sandwiches are okay, if overpriced. Avoid the poke wrap. It is legitimately not good - well, if you like poke, that is. It's mixed with a sauce that subtracts all the taste of poke and something that seems like coleslaw. The redeeming factor is probably the view. This was my first time here with a couple of friends and we all enjoyed our lunch. I had the Mauna Kea sandwich with a side salad, on homemade focaccia. It was yummy with lots of fresh veggies. One friend enjoyed the Poke bowl that had many layers of flavors that blended very well. Portions were perfect, I could have ordered half a sandwich, but for a few dollars more, got the whole and took half home for a snack later. This was my first stop this trip and my oh my, was I disappointed in the food. We had: - cinnamon pull apart - fish sandwich - fish tacos The pull apart was DRY. The fish sandwich had an odd tomato dressing on it that wasn't working for me at all. The fish tacos were "ok". Ok, so, maybe lunch is not what I use to love about this place? We came back. For breakfast. We had: - cinnamon pull apart - island pancakes - salmon bagel Again, the pull apart was DRY... We didn't even finish it. The pancakes were "ok" but the sauce (which I had to order an extra of) just was very "meh" not sweet, not much flavor. Ok, I was surprised by the last item, the salmon bagel. It was actually REALLY good! Me thinks with the new digs (and the great big bar there now), that some of the soul has been lost here. Maybe there are new owners? Did some old cooks or chef leave? I'm not sure, but, I can't keep a 5 star review on this, it just doesn't fit. I will say, both times we came, the service was great, so, there's that. Ok, I have become one of those special people who makes a lot of special orders and some find that annoying. But I want what I want and lava Java was just the ticket for me yesterday. They had many more healthy breakfast options than the majority of the breakfast joints in Kona, and when they say veggie it isn't just onion and bell pepper. My egg white omelet with roasted veggies, no cheese. I know this is what I have become, yikes. Was amazing! It had zucchini, green onion, carrot, bell pepper, mushroom and pesto. Soooo good! My husband had a tradition breakfast and it was his favorite of our trip so far as well. We went to Island Lava Java to have a late breakfast because this place is recommended in a travel guidebook. This place is right next to the ocean so the bonus you get for eating there is the ocean view, especially on a sunny day. Waitresses seem pretty laid-back and friendly. Free street parking is difficult to find, so we had to park at a paid lot. When we got there, we didn't know if we should follow the instruction to just grab the menu and sit at any seat we liked (this is very laid-back) or if we should wait for someone to get us a table (this is what I am used to). Originally I wanted to sit at the only table that looked clean and provided a good view of the ocean, but when we were deciding if we should really occupy that table, one waitress came out with utensils and led a group of people that came after us to that only clean table. Because of this, we were even more confused if we should let the waitress know first we were here. After seating that group of people, the waitress saw us and asked if we had been served. We said no, so she just told us to sit anywhere. I told her there was no clean table, so she had to clean one table out for us before we could sit down to order. The beginning experience at this place was a bit confusing, but later everything was good. Soon another waitress came to take our order. Because it was a late breakfast and I was pretty hungry, I ordered Luau Omelette. It was filled with roasted Kalua pork and grilled pineapple, and it came with rustic potatoes and Portuguese sausage. When my food came, I was surprised, because my omelet was huge! (I usually eat a lot, but I couldn't finish this.) The pork and grilled pineapples were very tasty, and I liked it very much. The potatoes and sausages were good, but my sausages were a little burnt. However, it was just a minor thing. I enjoyed my omelet greatly that I didn't care much my sausages were a little burnt. Summing up the environment, ocean view, friendliness of waitresses, and the taste of the food I ordered, this place earned 5 stars from me. I got the Lava Java Breakfast with eggs, Portuguese sausage and one big fluffy waffle Husband got the Wait'I'O Breakfast with a side of Potatoes (he could've skipped that since the portions are big!) The iced coffee was delicious, I like mine super sweet so I got it with macadamia nut syrup but they charged an extra $1.50 on top of the coffee. Overall, the food came super quick, service was good & it kept us full literally all day until dinner time but expect to pay a bit more than most places. If you're planning to go hit up the south side or the volcanoes, stop here and have a big breakfast to last you but if you're price conscious and grabbing breakfast for a bigger party, keep looking around for cheaper options. read more

Lava java has good breakfast but I do feel they are a bit over priced for the portions that they give. This is the only restaurant that we have been to where the prices are just way to high for what they give. Me and my husband both ordered the Lava Java breakfast. Waffles eggs and Portuguese sausage and he ordered pancakes eggs and bacon. Of course they charge extra for the waffle but it's not stated on the menu. They gave me the smallest amount of Portuguese sausage. All the other places were very generous with their meat portions. Besides the price of the meal the food was good. Came here in the morning for breakfast. I ordered the big kahuna fish breakfast. For my egg choice, I chose over hard and rice. My plate came and instead of rice, there were the 'rustic potatoes'. I have no problems with potatoes, so I decided to ignore that as a simple mistake. I look at my fruit, which is a strawberry, two pineapple slices, and a starfruit slice all skewered together, and I see that the strawberry is moldy. Alright... I assume they prepare these skewers maybe a day beforehand, right? Not too much of a big deal. I set that strawberry aside. I cut open my egg, and to my surprise, the yolk oozes out. This was not over hard for sure. I wouldn't eat this, so I asked the waitress to get me what I actually ordered. I had no problems with the fish, it was cooked just right.
