When we arrived, it felt like my visits to the Islands in Thailand. Golf carts, sand, souvenir shops (barter), bars and restaurants. We rented a golf cart and put putted around the area. I highly recommend. I know we did it like a tourist but will be back to explore the island and stay several nights. You should too.

Lots of businesses on the beach which served drinks and food. There are no public (and free) seating from what we saw...all chairs belong to a business which will charge $40+ USD to use alone. Many will provide free seating if you drink or dine with them....so research and plan accordingly if you plan on staying at the beach.

I highly recommend doing this as there are a lot of walking paths that allow you to access the coast. There is a lot more to see than meets the eye! Make sure to bring 10 peso coins if you would like to use the restroom as they are not free! There were ice cream and pizza stands as well as many instagram worthy moments! Do not go to Isla Mujeres without going to Punta Sur! :)

Keep in mind these are only here in season…read more (Starting around June 1st - September 15th) The downside to coming to Mexico to swim with the Whale Sharks is you have to wear those ridiculous life vests, but in Isla Mujeres it's almost a guaranteed sighting. Due to government regulations no free diving . The life vest makes it seem like more of a tourist trap than pelagic adventures in other countries. Still a great experience to be in the water with such magical creatures.

The boat ride to get to the sharks can be long (approx. 1 - 1.5 hours) but worth it. Our guide Felipe explained what we can do and what we cant do once we get to the whale sharks. Once a whale shark was spotted, the captain dropped us in the water, perfectly positioned to see the whale shark. Once we returned, we stopped at Playa Norte (some the prettiest water I have ever seen in my life) and they made some fresh ceviche for everyone on board. What a great day and I would recommend their services to anyone.

With that said, the actual swimming space on the beach is so narrow that all you can really do is stand in one area with your friends. You're doing no swimming while at this beach. (We were lucky enough to take a boat that anchored right off the beach to allow for swimming there. I'm so grateful for that. But if it's just the sand you're there for you are in luck because it's such a massively deep beach with plenty of space to spread out. There are some umbrellas and beach chairs out, but they're all rentals so be prepared to pay for those, bring your own, or just be out in the sun. There are plenty of vendors roaming the beaches selling ice cream and trinkets. I will leave it up to you if that's a positive or a negative. I think a cold frozen treat on a hot beach day was great. Not so much with the souvenirs that looked like they were made in China. In the end, I'm glad I got to experience Playa Norte. However, if I were to ever return to the island, I think I would spend more time elsewhere on the island than the beach.

The drinks were reasonably priced as well as the food. Our host was attentive and very polite. The beach ambiance was great; clean and free of clutter. One thing to note is you will get peddlers constantly trying to sell you merchandise but this is Mexico so its expected. However if you like cigars like I do, all the "Cubans" are fake so don't buy them. Will definitely come back to this relaxing spot for a day at the beach.
