Cheval Residences - Cheval Calico House

Cheval Residences

Cheval Residences, Knightsbridge: 2 bedroom, 2.5 bath…read more My London trip was originally for myself and my partner but when a friend of ours decided to join us, it became a difficult and expensive proposition looking for 2 rooms in the same hotel. We err on the side of luxury so we're considering the Lanesborough, Mandarin Oriental and the like but 2 rooms was going to cost a fortune. Then I discovered Cheval by accident on Trip Advisor. Even after looking at the pictures and viewing the floor plans for each of the apartments, I still wasn't sure what to expect. The Cheval Knightsbridge location is interesting because the main office is essentially a small room off a side street about a 3 minute walk to the apartments themselves. We were greeted by a very polite gentleman who ran through the paperwork. We had arrived about 4 hours early and since I had inquired a month earlier, I was not expecting to be allowed early check in. So I was very pleasantly surprised when he called the housekeeper and we were let in immediately. Just down the road and off another alley, the apartment building is 3 levels and unassuming. I had chosen what I thought was a 2 bedroom, 2 bath apartment and this was located on the basement level down a flight of stairs. Upon entry, we were taken aback at the sheer size and luxury of our home away from home. The apartment features a large living area with booth seating around a dining room table, a comfortable couch, a fully-stocked kitchen with every gadget you'd have at home (if not more), a television and cute decor that really adds to a homey feeling - including even a cuckoo clock! The second bedroom was across the hall from the living area - spacious with a huge bath and two double beds pushed together for one large bed - you can request for the beds to be separated and you sleep an additional person. Our friend would be so happy. At the end of the hall was the master, a large room with enjoined bathroom, queen sized bed, writing desk and enough closet space for the queen. There was more closet space in the hallway and, Lo and behold, a third bathroom in the laundry room which had a washer and dryer. Upon further investigation of our digs, we discovered the housekeeper had provided the trappings of breakfast - butter, eggs, milk, juice - and tea and Nespresso coffee. What a comfort to have such familiariarities. And the gifts continued in various manifestations every day after the housekeeper left - chocolate, coffee, biscuits, a candle for souvenir, even plastic bags for airport security. After a whirlwind four days in London, our stay with Cheval was truly a highlight of our trip. The comfort and conveniences it offered, the friendliness of the staff and the location in Knightsbridge next to restaurants, shopping and all manner of public transport truly made our trip great. Should you decide to stay with Cheval - Knightsbridge or any other location - I have no doubt you will have as great a stay as I did.

The flats are little gems located on Collingham Road, just a few minutes' walk from either the Gloucester Road or Earl's Court tube stations. I hate to give this little place away, in case we ever do move back to London and want to rent here again, I don't want us to not be able to move back in due to lack of space ;-) This is by far the most affordable rent in the area!! The flats are studios - two bedrooms, for what I've seen. Both of those we rented were studios. Do note that some of them are 'shared bathrooms', meaning, as it sounds - you share a bathroom with others in the building. We really wanted to live in this area, as it's super safe and just lovely, so we didn't mind. Our first flat was a typical studio flat - shared bathroom, which was right outside our door, on the top floor of one of the buildings. Quiet building, great neighbours, no problems! Our second flat was a lofted studio with a balcony facing Collingham Road. This was a great little place in that it felt like we had two rooms - due to the lofted area. Had some noisy neighbours for a while, unfortunately, but that didn't hinder our experience. Having the balcony was a dream in the summertime for putting little grills and such out there. Management was located in the building right next door in case anything were to happen (or if you're like me - to lock yourself out!). Received full return of our deposits both times and I would HIGHLY recommend living here. Adored it!!

Almost a year, actually. We needed a specific size, had a lot of preferences on shape and comfort, and couldn't agree on color. We trekked down to their showroom (as well as a few further away) and finally decided to go for it. They required payment in full (around $3400) which should have been my first red flag. I placed an order anyway and was told it would be delivered in 4-6 weeks. Maybe an extra week because we were slightly outside their delivery area. This was on July 30. And then, crickets. 6 weeks later (Sept 10) I get an email "We're closing!! Showroom sale all this week!" I email back: what does this mean for current orders? Technically you should be shipping my couch by now, so even if you're closing in 3 days, the third party trucking company should already have the order. No reply. Two weeks later I write a furious email to the UK division. A few days later someone gets back to me saying they're understaffed and overworked. They say they are canceling my order unless I can get someone in the city to accept the delivery and then take on the task of getting it to me in NH. At this point, I'm furious. They were going to cancel my order without even telling me? I do have unemployed friends in NY but before I started begging for favors, I emailed back confirming the final price with the promised discount and without the NH shipping fees. They responded saying "Oh, great news! We're going to ship your couch after all!" How is this great news? This is your only job. This has been your only job for over 8 weeks. In that email, they said it would take two more weeks. I should have cancelled. I really should have. But I was so invested at this point and really didn't want to put in even more research and then wait another two months for another couch. I wanted the one I ordered. After this email, it was crickets again. I was getting ready to contest the charge with my credit card company. Five weeks later (yesterday) I received the couch. It looks good. It feels ok. It gives me anxiety just to look at it. I can't believe the shit this company has put me through, and after all, there was no discount given, no apologies, and nobody to take responsibility. TL;DR: 4-6 week delivery window actually took 12, and they couldn't have been more rude and condescending about it. The company closed after taking 100% deposits from customers and would have run off with the money if I hadn't chased them down over it. I realize they're only in the UK now, but I would never recommend them to a friend over there and feel that I need to properly warn. Their employee reviews on Glassdoor are equally unfavorable. Beware!

My flat was a one bedroom, with dressing area, bathroom with tub, living/dining area with room at the table for four plus a kitchen. The kitchen included range top, oven, refrigerator, microwave and washer/dryer combination. Beware - even at the quick setting, it takes literally hours to do washing and drying, but it was still nice to have. The nearest tube stops are Earl's Court and Gloucester. It is near several grocery stores (Waitrose and Sainsbury) and of course it's near many pubs and restaurants.
