This is a great place to take family and friends to not only venture down into a mine but to hear the history and stories of when the mine was open and running. After taking the train ride into the mine a guide will lead you thru the mine. Im 63 and always take first timers to the UP to the Iron Mine. I probably have been through this mine 30plus times. I feel I could be a guide since I can practically recite what they tell you. LOL Don't miss a chance to tour this mine. P.S. A word of caution don't wear new shoes. Weat an old beat up pair. Really unique experience. It was interesting to go underground and get a glimpse of an old iron ore mine. It gets a bit cold down there but they give you a yellow raincoat and hard hat before you take the ride into the mine so shouldn't be a problem for most. read more

Really enjoyed the history lesson and hearing the stories. The train ride in the mine was cool. My only minor complaint was that the whole experience was too short. I wanted more! Would like to see more exhibits and less gift shops. read more

Very informative tour. All of the employees were kind and knowledgeable about the mine. The mine is 43 degrees year round and wet in some spots, so wear shoes that you don't mind getting a little bit of clay/dirt on. The tour is 45 minutes long, but it seems really fast. Would go again! read more

This place is a great time for the whole family!! I first visited when I was a young kid with my family. I also just visited a yesterday with my own 4 year old son and some other family. The people who run the shop was very nice and super helpful if we had any questions. The actual tour was amazing! Both tour guys did a really great job explaining all the equipment and history of the mine. Both guys were very knowledgeable and quick to answer any questions thrown at them. I would advice to were comfortable shoes that you do not mind getting wet and dirty. I would also advice to wear something warm as inside the mine stays between 40 and 44 degrees inside no matter what temperature it is outside. The tour does provide raincoats and you must wear a hard hat. read more

The tour was really great. No crazy flashing lights or animatronic elves in the cave. Just lots of good information from a very knowledgeable tout guide. He explained everything very well and answered our questions like he really understood what he was talking about. My kids enjoyed the trip in the mine car to get down into the depths of the mine. One thing I'd say is wear shoes that can get wet and dirty. The floor of the cave isn't exactly ADA compliant with rocks and big puddles to dodge. I wore sandals & had wet feet by the end of the tour. The gift shop had all the postcards and various knickknacks you would imagine. Lots and lots of different rock types to buy as well for your future geologist. read more

So fun, SO Michigan! Big John out front is reason enough to make this trip. Kids (and adults, for that matter) can't help but holler the first time they see him. The happy miner, clad in his regulation helmet, rain slicker, and black boots, towering high above the road welcoming passersby. Grab your camera and take a picture with him. Your friends won't believe his height as he easily dwarfs the surrounding pine trees. Then book your tour for the mine itself. Tours are conducted daily from June thru mid-October and trust me when I tell you that they're a highlight to any trip. You're outfitted with safety helmets and jackets (it's cold in the mine--dress accordingly) and loaded onto rail cars. From there, you coil through nearly 2600 feet of underground tunnels until you find yourself 400 feet below the earth. The views are amazing! Stalagmites, stalactites, cavernous pits, etc. In addition to the fun you'll have, you'll also learn about Michigan's mining history and the brave men who made their livings down in those tunnels. It's really quite captivating. When the tour comes to an end, make your way into the Rock Shop for a few inexpensive souvenirs. Me, I picked up about seven different rocks for a little garden I'm starting in the backyard. To this day when I see them I still think about Big John. "Big Johhh-on. Big, bad John." Tons of fun! Recommendations: wear walking shoes that can get a little dirty, it's cold in there so bring a sweater! You are given a manky old raincoat and hard hat, but they're necessary. The seats of the train get a little wet from being in the damp mine. Overall it's a super cool experience and you MUST go if you're in the area! read more

This place was awesome. Our guide, Mike, was very knowledgeable about the history of the mine and took the time to answer any and all questions. We had someone with a cane in our group, and he was very respectful and made sure that the pace of our tour was slow enough that he could keep up without being too slow. My family loved exploring the inside of the mine and wish the tour was longer. The gift shop was equally as enjoyable. Definitely worth the trip! read more
