We were greeted so warmly by the gentleman at the reception desk and he was helpful and informative. He really made an impression on us. Give that man a raise! The lobby area had seating as well as room to gather and/or meet and greet. The theater itself is very intimate but not tiny. The seats were comfortable and the sight lines seem to be good from anywhere in the house. The film Surviving Bokator was fantastic, and there was room on the stage for a live demonstration of the Cambodian martial art of Bokator.

We sat in the 4th row, and it was perfect! The set design, props, and concepts were excellent, and the actors' execution was outstanding, resulting in spectacular fun! Even though there were only 6 actors, it felt like a full cast ensemble, and they worked tremendously hard to pull it off. The musical follows the 1st book and A Tale of 2 Kitties puuuurrrrrrrrrrfectly, word-for-word! After the show, the actors did an impromptu meet and greet on their way out. Despite being tired and sweaty, they stopped and chatted with the children who were still around, asking how they enjoyed the play. The actors were incredibly gracious, taking lots of photos and signing autographs for the kids. It was a wonderful close to the show. We've been to many shows for our children, and none have been able to capture their hearts and attention the way this show did from beginning to end. It was fun for adults too, very funny and extremely creatively done! Thanks so much! Also, I was hoping they would continue the dance party as we left the theater, and they didn't disappoint us. My kids are wanting to squeeze in one more visit to the show. This theater also supports Art-Reach Cards! There are no seat restrictions for this show. The play I saw was very interesting (the kind of play that I need to sit with and maybe read to process), and the facilities are great: not a bad seat in the theater, cafe in the lobby, plenty of bathrooms... As a friend of mine and I agreed, Pig Iron is Philly's answer to experimental theatre. However, it is probably some of the most accessible experimental theatre that you'll see around. They produce and perform all original works (I guess by the transitive property of the word 'experimental' the statement I just made is redundant...). They don't have a fixed address because depending on the show, they will use a different venue to accommodate their needs. (UPDATE 4/25/07: I just found out that their dedicated rehearsal space is the Latvian Society.) For example, their production of "Chekhov Lizard Brain" was put up in the Latvian Society of Philadelphia! (Yeah, that's what I said, "We have one of those in Philly?" The place actually has a stadium seating theater that hold about 100 people!) Needless to say, they transformed the space and gave a stellar performance. From what I've heard (seeing as how this was my first production of their's) the company excels at the physical aspects of theatre and they are masters of using words. Ticket prices are completely reasonable and there are also deals available for students. You will definitely see me at future shows!

Pig Iron... brings back memories. Philadelphia is a fantastic breeding ground for experimental theater, from the Mark Lord/Hiroshi Iwasaki team at Bryn Mawr/Haverford College Theater or through their Big House productions to the Pig Iron to 1812 to Mum Puppet to Spiral Q. Since their inception at Swarthmore College, Pig Iron has staged all original productions, which are the result of their dance, theater, and clown ensemble. Their works are continually being restaged, evolving through each restaging as a result of a different physical venue, different ensemble, or different script. If you haven't caught one of their performances, do so before they become too big and unaffordable as they are well on the way already. For example, they are now commanding $20-30 per ticket whereas the ticket prices ranged $5-15 in my day.

That in itself makes it a very festive place, no? It seats about 230 people, is colorful, large and clean, and honestly, there's not a bad seat in the house. It goes on for a few days maybe even a week each summer. Get there early. Find a good spot and pack something to eat. It's a really great event to have dinner and a movie with friends and family.
