This is a non profit organization and primarily a yoga studio but also has about 6 art shows a year, some 200 workshops and events annually in the fields of dance, music, theater, clowning, comedy, film, and other performing and visual arts. They also partners with local grassroots organizations to raise funds and foster dialogue for communities in need. Our largest recurring arts events are the Fun-A-Day Community Art Show every February, the Philadelphia Fringe Festival every September, and Philly Clown Slam one Thursday a month throughout the year. On that particular day, I attended the West African dancing with live drumming. I believe the class is offered every Sunday. Its about 6.00 - 12.00 to attend. The class was great. It was a good workout and I enjoyed learning about the West African culture and possibly how my ancestors danced hundreds of years ago. The drumming and teacher was awesome and the enviorment was positive and friendly. So I attended a class at Studio 34 many moons ago and I was looking for a space to host a launch party for my business 12th Glow. Stephanie the studio assistant made the whole process of viewing the space and booking super easy. She left me detailed instructions and was super helpful if I had any questions. The space itself is soooo beautiful and inviting. When I think of a safe space this is the place that comes to mind. It's very clean and well taken care of. There's an awesome community space with bulletin boards and comfy couches. There are studio spaces where classes are regularly held and therapy rooms. I tried the African Dance Class this past Sunday afternoon at 3pm and it was exceptional ! I have never taken an African Dance class and I attended this class with some ladies of Mahogany Philly. Literally, as soon as I walked in I felt welcomed. The parking situation outside was not difficult by any means which I also appreciate. The instructor was talented and funny and I gave us a wonderful class. It was almost 2 hours and was such a workout ! The cost was $12 and you have the option to tip the drummers at the end of the class which is nice. I would definitely attend again and bring a friend. read more

Visited Philly a few weeks ago and Studio 34 was located within 15 minutes walk of my Airbnb apartment. I regularly practice at home, and was elated to see a Yin class on their schedule - and I was even more pleasantly surprised at the conclusion of the class! The studio is located in the upstairs flat of a building. The space encompasses charming elements of the original space, with a modern, chill twist. There's a lounge area, though I didn't have an opportunity to personally check it out. All tools and props are available for class, including complimentary mats, if you should need one. Classes are well priced and should be financially accessible to most, at $12 for most classes (some are less). I took a Sunday evening Yin class with Amanda. She was very welcoming at the desk upon my entry. She is knowledgeable about Yin and was a great instructor. If I lived in the area, I would certainly frequent this studio on a regular! I've been wanting to take an African dance class since college but loathed the idea of hopping around with mostly white, mostly classically trained dancers at my liberal arts institution. Then I moved back to Philly and thought about taking a class at the UPenn gym where I am already a member. However, the whopping class fee - uh, hello, I already pay a yearly fee! - and thought of suffering the annoyances of the UPenn female undergrad population - why are you plastered to your Blackberry while working out?! - was equally unappealing. A friend of mine raved about Studio 34 and the work exchange program she had done there. Lo and behold, they have a weekly, drop-in African dance class for...wait for it, wait for it....$10! Yes, $10! Luckily, that price does not include snarky undergrads. I went to my first class on a rainy Sunday and had a great time. There were only three other people present, but I felt immediately comfortable and supported despite my complete lack of dance ability or training. By the end of the class, I was moving along just as well as the other folks. The teacher, Assumane, is wonderful and enthusiastic and you can't help but want to give it your best shot even if your left foot won't listen to your brain. This class is a great workout, especially for someone like me who isn't very in tune with her body but hates toiling away on a machine. You use all parts of your body in these dances from Guinea-Bissau and therefore, you kind of just make peace with whatever wobbly bits you've got. I also LOVE, LOVE, LOVE that this is a weekly ongoing class. I don't have to worry about schedule interferences because I know I can always go the next week. You can't beat $10 to try something out. I look forward to trying some of their yoga classes as my body confidence improves. I adore Studio 34. The owners - Stephen, Angie, and James - are super friendly and really committed to the community. The classes I've taken have ranged from average (a one-time occurrence with a new substitute teacher) to absolutely exceptional (especially Julia H's Vinyasa class on Friday mornings... It's the highlight of my week). I've always been particularly impressed by the level of individual attention students receive from the teachers. If you have the time, sign up for the work-exchange program. After a short training class, sit at their desk for two hours and sign in students for class, and you earn yourself a free yoga class. Offer to do the closing shift (6-8 p.m. on weekdays; earlier on weekends), and you earn an extra class credit. In 1.5 years of frequenting Studio 34, I've only paid for one class (which honestly makes me feel slightly guilty, since I want to support them, but there are limited funds in this grad student's budget). read more

This review is based solely on their art exhibits and the reception that they have for them. But hot damn does Studio 34 know how to showcase some awesome exhibits! I stopped in for their Fun-A-Day showing and it was easily the coolest exhibit concept that I've ever seen. For the 31days of January 2009 artists created one piece for each day. Some of the creations were standard art concepts (pastels on paper plates, bead works, acrylic on canvas). Other pieces like a homage to giraffes, a showcase of different couches and the people/items on them, And Yelp's own Emily A.'s homage to her departed dog, took the theme idea to a whole new level. While some were so down right bizarre that they were ingenious. One person flossed for 31 one days and used the floss for an embroidery piece (seriously!). Another applied to the craziest sounding jobs he could find on Craiglist during January and made a booklet out of the results. Throw in the great spread of food and wine provided, and great entertainment like trapeze artists, And 34 delivered one amazing event. But the main reason to go to Studio 34 are the classes (and they have several that I have to look into). After all it might just be the only place where you can study Pilates, Reiki, Hoop Dancing, and Tai Chi under one roof. And they are definitely going to continue on with the incredible arts events. Studio 34 is one of Philly's true treasures. Tucked away in a quaint but hip section of West Philly, it offers a wide variety of affordable wellness services and cultural arts. The space is funky and inviting and everyone who walks in is made to feel welcome. The studios are spacious and immaculately clean. The Pilates classes and individual lessons provided by Julia are, from my experience, not only the best in the city but the most affordable (because she practices on the principle that wellness should be accessible to everyone). She is a patient, knowledgeable, and fun teacher who loves what she does and shares that passion with her students. I'm not into yoga, but I still love this place. It's a central gathering spot for events and gatherings of all sorts. The space has high ceilings, wood floors, and expansive windows. I feel centered and open every time I walk in. My imagination and sense of wonder is unleashed when I come in. The energy of 100s of yoga aficionados are dwell in this space and I can feel it. LOVE. love love love. For about a year, I was in Philly almost every week for work. I took a few yoga classes at Studio 34. The instructors (especially Brittany) are very helpful and try to get to know you and your yoga strengths and weaknesses. I was given a lot of feedback about my alignment. The strong sense of community, even among total strangers, in each class was very evident. I love the laid back, no frills, somewhat granola vibe of the studio. The space is huge. The tea is yummy. Classes are $10 a pop. What a great way to expose yoga to the general masses. I wish there were studios like this in NY. read more

Not just a yoga studio. Studio 34 features art exhibits, pilates, massage, reiki and a host of other offerings. And it's just a really cool space. I take 1-2 pilates classes a week here. I think the instructor, Julia, is really great. She's careful to make sure students are performing poses correctly, which is important b/c doing poses incorrectly can lead to injury. She's very knowledgeable about different muscle groups and the body. She's taught me some great stretches to help offset the soreness i often get after running. Strengthening my core by doing pilates has improved my balance, which has aided my running and my yoga practice. Julia's classes can be hard (depending on the level of the students in the class), but you really do feel great after. And free water and tea! read more

With prompting from co-workers I finally decided to try out some yoga classes at Studio 34. I had always been discouraged by the high prices ($10 per class-I'm not sure how that compares to other studios but it seems to me like a lot of money for people who have to live on a tight budget like myself) but I decided that I would at least give it a try. I was immediately impressed by the expansiveness of the layout of the actual studio. Everything feels so open and welcoming. I find it very peaceful to just be in the physical space of the studio and I enjoy watching the light stream in through the trees in the window during class. I've tried both Hatha and Kundalini yoga but much preferred the Hatha. The Kundalini class is more of a meditative experience whereas Hatha does more to stretch out my body. I have a lot of back and joint pain and I find that Hatha yoga loosens me up and allows me to be more present in my body. I also really love the instructor, Nicole. She makes sure to come around and help you individually with positions so that you can get the maximum benefit. I love her calm, nonjudgmental demeanor. The Kundalini class was a lot of sitting in the same position and I found that it actually hurt my back more than helped. They also offer Forrest yoga but I have yet to check it out. In general the studio is a wonderfully open place where you can go to let go of your baggage and just be yourself. I find that everyone I interact with there is extremely friendly and open-minded. The only reason that I didn't give it a 5 stars is because of the high prices. Otherwise I've been totally satisfied! read more

I am a total beginner to yoga but decided to try Studio 34 because it is very convenient to where I live. In short, reasonable prices, great beginner classes, and super friendly staff and patrons. I use yoga as a way to relax, so I can not speak to it as a physical workout, but Studio 34 has so many options I'm sure you could find something you like. My favorite class is the Restorative class, super relaxing and I always leave feeling great. The Kundalini and the Hatha 101 were more based in yogic principles. Chakras and the like, which isn't necessarily my thing, but nice that it is available. If you are looking for a studio definitely check this out. read more

Took the hoop class here - great stuff! Took a great pilates class there! I also attended a vinyasa class led by a brand new instructor to the studio. She seemed really nervous (being her 1st time teaching a class, I can understand), but she had to keep looking down at a set of poses, which was kind of distracting. Also, she kept giving us backwards directions and sometimes forgetting to do the same pose on the other side, etc. I'm really accustomed to having music present during yoga, which wasn't the case during this class. I don't know if that particular instructor just doesn't use music, or if it's the whole staff? read more

Namaste! I've been doing yoga here for about 2 years. Being somewhat of a newbie, it was a great place to start my practice. I quickly signed up with the monthly unlimited after the $40 intro for new students. At only $90 for students, which is a complete steal if you compare to other yoga studios. I started going every day and formed a little yoga family. What makes this place so very different is the students themselves. You will not find a whole class full of lululemon's here. Take a class with Morgan, Brittany, Angie, or Stephen. Brittany will remind you to be kind to yourself and encourage insight. I found a kid's yoga class online and dropped in with my 10 year old son tonight. The space has a rustic charm but the actual yoga studio is modern. Although it's on the 2nd floor, it feels like it's part of the community (the urban eco friendly community). Initially I was put off by the dimness and the silence but I found useful things to read and then I finally settled down and enveloped myself in the silence as I attempted to be mindful of my breath. My son enjoyed his class and is looking forward to returning. read more

I just started attending this studio last month and am smitten with the intimate vibe and friendly staff. The classes are challenging and adventurous but the instructors are generous with adjustments and explanations. The space is gorgeous and relaxed, overlooking Baltimore Ave from the third story; the waiting area is exceedingly comfortable. As someone coming back to yoga after a few years prodigal, it's the perfect blend of personal challenge and educational development, and I'd recommend it to beginners and veterans alike. i took a forrest yoga class with angie. it was my first yoga class since returning to philly. i have never been here before. I researched the yoga in the city and decided to check it out. the space is unbelievable. lounge area, massage rooms. more then one yoga studio. it is a real community. they have donation classes too. i havent been able to check out all the stuff they offer. but the yoga was great. angie remembered every name in the class. she was informative and hands on. you can tell she loves to teach. its a calling. it's so nice to know that there is a place like this in philadelphia. i also know they have a free open practice in the morning. i think beginners and seasoned yogis alike would love this place. i think you can find peace in there. read more

The space is really cool and its just a great addition to any neighborhood. I only have done Forrest Yoga here -- and Forrest is weird. But the instructor was great and the people were laid back. With their community pricing and some pay what you can classes, its opens it up for everyone. I came to Studio 34 because of its proximity to my home. On a whim, I decided to get the new student monthly pass. Boy do I have mixed feelings about that. I don't want to seem like a yoga snob, but the studio that you practice in does not seem very well kept, and their yoga blankets smell. There are dirty feet marks on the wall from when people did handstands! I went to multiple different classes trying to figure out which one I liked most and always left a little disappointed.... Until I met MORGAN. He is THE one and only reason this studio is worth going to. I always made it a point to attend his classes. I was always too scared to do a tripod headstand and was finally able to do it in his class! Thank you Morgan!! If you are a beginner, this studio is for you. If you want to advance your practice, take Morgans class. read more

I am very disappointed with my experience with Studio 34. I have tried calling and emailing multiple times to several different email addresses without anyone responding for the past week. This summer I expected to be in Philadelphia frequently so I bought a $45 month unlimited class pass. Unfortunately, due to family circumstances I will be in New York for most of my summer. My many attempts at trying to contact someone regarding my situation to hopefully get a refund have gone ignored. It feels as though they just want my money and don't care that I won't even be in the area to take the classes and use the pass. Hopefully others have a better experience in communicating with the people who work here. read more

I've never actually done yoga here, but I do love that you can get a massage for so wonderfully cheap! It is only $30 for an hour somehow! They have free tea, wifi and comfy places to lounge if you just have time to kill, or want to kick back before a yoga class or massage. I live two blocks away from this amazing establishment, and I can't say enough how wonderful an addition it has been to the neighborhood. The classes are great, with a variety of wonderful teachers. I'm particularly a fan of Stephen and Angie's 2hr sunday class, Jess and Julia H's vinyassa classes, Julia N's pilates classes, and Nikki's Hatha class. I'm waiting until my knee strengthens up a bit before tackling Caitlin's breakdancing classes, but really, everything there is pretty fantastic. But beyond the yoga and pilates classes, what really makes this place such a valuable resource is their community-mindedness. I love the front area, its very cozy, there's tons of places to lounge & hang out. The rooms are big & stay nice & hot & the front desk staff is very friendly. I also like that they have towels available for everyone. My 1 complaint is that there's 1 shower & it's in a restroom so I waited a long time to shower. I was there for a workshop/book signing which was fantastic, but I can't comment on their regular classes. read more
