Came here after stopping downtown for shopping, and it's a hidden gem. The sushi here was amazing! It was some of the best I've had in Connecticut and the United States. As seen in the photos, they present it to you with garnish and high quality visuals. The miso soup was just right, not too watery as when I make it at home with packets. The taste for the sushi was also very smooth and clean, not fishy or smelly. The only issue I had was there was a hair in one of my rolls, although it was very small and didn't impact my meal. You're definitely getting high quality sushi for the price you pay, which is very reasonable compared to supermarkets. Another issue I had was that I wanted to eat a lunch special, but was informed there was no lunch on Sundays; would've been nice to know beforehand with a sign but again didn't deter my ability to dine here. The service was very nice. It did take them about 5 minutes to notice me waiting at the front in an empty restaurant, but they were polite about it and apologized. The waitstaff is very friendly, to me and another customer who came in afterwords. Overall positive experience with the staff here. The ambiance of the restaurant was also very traditional, with wood floors and tables, a sushi bar and overall rustic atmosphere. Very clean and well maintained! Place has gone downhill. Sorry to say. Bland, mediocre to average quality sushi & maki rolls. Rather ordinary & blasé presentation. Used to be plate decorations made from carrots& cucumbers slices. Not that this is necessary for a good quality meal but it did make for a more enjoyable experience. Seaweed salad oily and icy. Overpriced for the not-great fare. Will not return. This new restaurant in downtown Madison is really a gem. It opened a few weeks ago, and as a Sushi lover I have been there twice. The Sushi is fresh and delicious and beautifully prepared. They offer a wide variety of sushi, sashimi and specialty sushi rolls. They also have a complete Japanese menu for those who prefer cooked Japanese food. I stuck with sushi and also tried the dragon roll, which was fabulous. My wife had the shrimp tempura, which was also delicious. A very light batter, fresh and not greasy. The owner, Michael Chen, was very present, meeting customers, clearing tables and making sure everything was going smoothly. Only a couple pieces were beyond my palate but I wanted to step out of my comfort zone and try something new. Glad I did. Michael was very polite and accommodating. He is a very nice guy and I wish him well with this new endeavor. The restaurant is still new and working through their processes, so if you happen to go, I would recommend bringing patience and understanding regarding the wait time. This was the second time I've been to this establishment, both times sitting outside on a beautiful day. I was happy to give iron chef a second try after my first time months ago, where I thought the rice was really dry on their maki rolls. This time around I was pleasantly surprised that the four rolls, one of which was a specialty roll, was absolutely fantastic, very flavorful and fresh. I judge my sushi by never using soy sauce, as I feel it takes away the enjoyment of the actual fish, always assuming it's not bad, but then again, you have to vet the places you visit. I love love sushi and I have been diving into the cuisine for over two decades, which makes me feel old but perhaps a seasoned veteran of this tasty treasure. As far as drinks ago, I had the house sake (always get it hot, my pref) and my husband got water (to each his own), service was great (was literally noon so not packed) and the bill + tip for three rolls + one specialty (+ sm sake) was between $50-$75. I don't think too terrible for two people dining on the shoreline on a beautiful day at the end of September, given the financial intricacies of fourth quarter 2023 :) read more

I have gone to Iron chef at least twice a week since i found out that it exists. I loved the sushi there and the atmosphere is very pretty and never had a problem. I even recommend this place to others. But why i gave the review is because of the service. They almost always force a tip and today was too much. I paid my bill in cash and before i could get out the door my waitress stops me saying "was my service not good" I was very confused my bill was $56 and i gave her $63. I thought my tip was fair and reasonable the service was averaging but nothing extra. She continued until i gave her more money. I feel like this is very unprofessional. read more
