I was pretty reluctant to give a new salon a try because I'm pretty set in my ways of going to my hometown, St. Louis, to get my hair cut. When you have curly hair, going to a new or different salon can bring up traumatic experiences. Thanks to the other yelpers, I booked an appointment with Jake and I couldn't be happier! Big city style and experience for a small town price! My cut plus tip was cheaper than my base hair cut price in St. Louis! Next time I can't make the trip to St. Louis, I won't hesitate to book an appointment! I made an appointment about 3 weeks in advance. Got a call a couple days before my appointment that I missed. They left me a voicemail saying the hairdresser scheduled a dr appointment for the time during my appointment. I called back and they said I could come in a couple hours later but I had work so I asked when the next opening was. The next opening was a whole month later! I don't mean to sound racist, but because of my ethnic background, I've had trouble finding hairstylists who know how to work with the texture and thickness of my hair. For a long time, I trekked up to Chicago every time I wanted a haircut because I was afraid to test the local talent in Champaign-Urbana. During a particularly busy month, my hair desperately needed a trim and I finally decided to try Ippatsu because I had read positive comments on it in The Daily Illini. For my first cut, I was introduced to Jake, and I've stuck with him since then. I admit that the $40 haircut sounds a little steep, but I've found it worth the cost every time. Unlike other hairstylists I've had in the past, Jake invests extra attention on a lot of detail work for my hairstyle; he even works out any necessary faults that appear only after my hair has been dried and styled. Any alterations can be made for free within 1 week of a haircut, and he regularly trims my bangs for free. I appreciate all of the effort and time he puts towards cutting my hair during visits, so I would give him my highest recommendation. Many people complain that the environment and staff in Ippatsu seem pretentious. I admit many of the hairstylists might seem a bit intimidating with their unconventional hairstyles and tattoos, but this doesn't necessarily mean that they are rude. I am not sure if these reviewers just visited the salon on a bad day, but I have never had trouble with the customer service, and I've always observed friendly interactions with other patrons while I've been there. read more

I cannot say enough about how great my experience was here. I have very curly, very thick hair that has been massacred many a time in the past. I had a guy in Chicago who had cut my hair for the last ten years and the only stylist I had ever come to trust with it. Commuting to Chicago for a haircut was becoming silly, so I began asking around: friends recommended Ippatsu, my mom recommended anyone certified with DevaCurl. Jake was these two things combined. Jake is great for a number of reasons. Not only did he know exactly what he was doing with my hair (understood how curl shape and size changes when drying, did a dry cut, understood product combinations, etc.), but he listened to what is wanted to get out of my hair. He was conservative with the length and took encouragement to go shorter, and gave me perhaps the best overall shape and texture I have ever had with a style (no Cleopatra bobs here!). In response to some of the other reviews I must say that the ambiance and professionalism of the new location is excellent: efficiently indie. Also, tis place is absolutely not at all whatsoever overpriced. I was charged $40 and tipped an extra $10 for an excellent first attempt with difficult hair. In Chicago I was paying nearly $90 for that kind of consistency (which in the city can run you upwards of $150 a cut). I was in and out in less than an hour with a style that I didn't want to wash out as soon as I got home. It's your hair, you live in it every day, so it should cost more than a date lunch. I have really curly hair and was looking for a place that did the DevaCurl cut and I found it. Jake was the person that cut my hair and he was awesome. First and foremost he was very knowledgeable about curly hair, how to cut it, and how to style it. He wasn't trying to sell me any product in there just to sell it he actually recommended some super cheap sally's products that he said would do the same thing as some of the expensive stuff. He took the time to talk to me about my hair and who I can maintan my curls. The salon is very different but I liked!!. It had a very edgy feel to it and the stylists fit in really well with the salon. Everyone was very polite and helpful, and one stylists brings her little dog in. But be prepared because if you don't have treats the dog won't talk to you! LOL!! My hair cut was $40 which to me is not a lot for a good knowledgeable stylist. Alot of people have been complaining about the cost and you really get what you pay for when you try to go with a cheaper stylist. It is funny how people will pay hundreds of dollars for jeans, shoes, and purses which people only see every once in a while, but when they get their hair cut or colored they want to spend the least amount possible even though people see your hair every day. Avoid at all costs!!! I went to the salon to get a simple trim with some basic layering - nothing too difficult. Doug ended up completely butchering my hair. He cut it 4 inches shorter than I asked, with no layering, totally blunt, heavy, and horrible. I'm a 20-some year old girl with the same haircut as my 60 year old mother. It was the first time in my life that a haircut reduced me to tears. Also, the salon was a sauna! They couldn't be bothered to turn on the AC even though it was 85 degrees out. I saw the salon's thermostat at a staggering 92 degrees and my body was sticking to the chair. The other stylists stared and awkwardly eavesdropped while I was getting my hair cut. I've gone to this salon for a couple of haircuts and a color job. Each time I've found their work to be "okay" but nothing special and too expensive for being in Champaign and their quality of work. I was also appalled that even though I was a known customer they charged $15 for a bang trim that took all of 3 minutes. I got a bad haircut at Lee's Salon, so I looked for someone with the skills to fix my hair. I called and talked to the people at Ippatsu about my problem. They matched me with Tori. I told Tori that I didnt want to shorten my hair further. Rather, I wanted the layers smoothed and blended. She showed me some photos on her phone to let me pick one that I liked. I chose a layered bob and repeated again that I didn't want my hair as short as in the picture. I wanted the layers blended together without shortening. She kept saying that she understood what I wanted. I think maybe that she has inadequate experience with Asian hair, because she spent two hours trimming and trimming. She complained that I have a lot of hair and kept cutting. She didn't pause to show me the progress nor to ask how it looked. And, finally, after two hours, when she showed me what she had done to my hair, I cried. Her idea of not shortening it was to leave one thin layer near my neck and to trim away all the rest of my hair! She asked her co-worker to take a look, and she suggested that it would look nicer without the last few longer hairs, so she cut half of that off, too, which made it look nicer, but far too short and completely different than what I had asked her to do. The most frustrating part was that, when I complained that she had cut too much, rather than apologizing, she pointed out that, "It will grow." I only give two stars because the receptionist came out as I left to apologize, and the owner later refunded my money. But my hair will take a long, long time to recover. read more

I really enjoyed my overall experience at Ippatsu Salon. I called and was able to make an appointment for the next afternoon with Amy. The salon has an overall trendy vibe. I liked the decoration and water was available in the waiting area. It was a comfortable temperature and was a pleasant place to be. I got there a bit early and my appointment started on time. Amy was friendly and seemed very knowledgable. I have medium length hair that is pretty thick and gets frizzy when it's layered too much. She did a great job putting the right amount of layers in so that it made my hair feel lighter and frame my face, but it doesn't get too frizzy. Quality of Work: *I have never dyed my hair here, only had hair cuts. My stylist is Amy, she knows how to engage clients in conversations and knows how to be a good listener. However, it's a bit hard to get her to do exactly what you want. She tries to be helpful by telling you her suggestions, but you have to outline your needs very precisely and sound like you mean it to get her to comply. Also, she can be a bit rough and pull your hair when brushing quickly. I wish she were more gentle with her hands. Price: Costly. My haircuts always run $40.00, and they are usually layering and cutting works, but no major makeovers. As soon as I walked in, the staff took my coat and sat me down for my appointment. They all seemed really young with funky hairstyles and tattoos but they seemed to know what they were doing. My hairstylist really took his time and made sure that I liked my new haircut. He was very very careful and didn't do anything beyond our talk without my consent, which was cool but I wouldn't have minded if he went all out as long as it looked cute. But maybe I'm pretty easy going so that's just my preference. I was a little bit worried because I saw his hands shaking a bit? but I think that's just how he is. I had a great experience at Ippatsu. Even though the haircut I was requesting was super simple, my stylist took the time to make sure she understood exactly what I wanted. She offered her recommendations when asked, and explained her rationale for her preference very clearly. She also struck a really great balance with conversation--we didn't sit in silence, but she also didn't feel the need to fill every second with chatter. She, and the rest of the staff, have gone above and beyond in customer service, including working on a particularly challenging color request for FOUR HOURS, just to be sure it was exactly the right shade of red. Like one of the reviewers, I went to Ippatsu way back in the day when it first opened. But the more I went, the less they seemed to want me there. The staff was less friendly and uninterested if you weren't super hip and funky. I just wanted a good cut, but never really got what I was looking for. After reading the other reviews, I was excited to try the DevaCut with Jake, but I was pretty much afraid to walk through the door of this place. In truth, the experience was great! The salon is full of a number of young "hip" looking people, but no one seemed mean or rude and I am about plain jane as they get. I think "hip-ness" is more a sign of the fact they are continuing to learn their craft and stay up on current trends. Jake is super nice and approachable as other reviews mentioned. He did talk to me as he styled my hair about what I could do to achieve the same style at home. He also talked to me about how curly hair is different than straight hair and needs to be treated differently. He seemed very knowledgable. He said that he and two of his fellow stylists-- Doug and Rebecca actually trained with the author of "Curly Girl" (and co-owner of the Devachan salon). From the cut I walked out of there with, it's apparent that Jake knows his stuff. I actually have a haircut that I can manage on my own without any complex styling routine. My hair looks great, has nice volume and frames my face better. Most importantly, it works with and accentuates my naturally curly hair. If you have curly hair, I absolutely recommend the DevaCut. If you can get it with Jake at Ippatsu even better. It's seriously one of the best hair cuts I have ever had. P.S. I HATE to spend money-- especially on haircuts. Love the new location, love the new interior, and absolutely loved the haircut that I got today! I've been going to and returning to Ippatsu for years now, they're the only hair salon that I go to when I'm out of the Chicago area! My past experiences with Ippastsu have been nothing but nice, but today... WHOA! So I've found this picture of the hairstyle I want, had it on my phone, and showed it to Jamie today. She's easy to work with, knows what you want , and delivers absolutely sweet results! She recognizes the directions of how my hair grows, incorporated that into the hairstyle that I want, and I couldn't be happier with what I see in the mirror right now :) I don't think it's hard for a stylist to style your hair when they have a picture to refer to; only when he/she know that your hair does not work the same as the person in the picture, and tries to put that style to life, is the key to a great look, and happy customer! They never try to sell you products, and every stylist have a personality of his/her own. I love how unique, artsy, and friendly they are. I like Ippatsu a lot, but their prices have gone up ($40 for a cut from Rebecca) and I finally felt like they didn't want my business any more. I had started going there when it was owned by Stephen and his partner (originators of "If we can't make you look good, you're ugly") and kept on when Rebecca took over. She's done a great job with the place, but I got the feeling my 30-somethingness just wasn't what they wanted in their clients. I'm not suburban-bland, but I'm not a hipster either. Good enough cut, but a little pricey... and I'm not a fan of the service. I'm new to the area and decided to give Ippatsu a try. The first time I went to get a cut, I had to wait more than a half hour because my stylist, Amy was behind. Ok, that happens but when she finally was ready for the cut she didn't even acknowledge how long I had been waiting, and none of the staff seemed really apologetic. I wouldn't usually complain for something trivial like that but today I had an appointment for a quick bang trim with Amy, and I walked in maybe 3 minutes late-- only to find out my appointment had been skipped. Ok, I can take partial responsibility for being late, but 3 minutes? Really? They told me someone else could do it, and I was already there so I got the trim from someone else... But Amy ignored me the whole time and didn't even acknowledge the situation, which just made it really awkward considering I was one of her clients... I'm generally an understanding person and wasn't that mad about being skipped (considering it was partially my fault) but I didn't like the vibe I got... I honestly got the feeling they couldn't care less if they had my business or not. That being said, I gave them three stars because the original cut I got with Amy was good enough. The reason I wouldn't give it more than that is because the cut wasn't good enough to warrant the high price tag. And then to have to pay another $15 (plus tip) to get my bangs trimmed is a little ridiculous. I believe Ippatsu could be a good place to go if you find the right stylist, but I did not. After being bored with my hair for a while, I decided it was time for a change. So, I called up Ippatsu (via a recommendation from a coworker) and made an appointment for a hair color with Johnathon. I went from a dark blonde to auburn and I absolutely love it! Johnathon was friendly, enthusiastic, and did a fantastic job! I would highly recommend Johnathon and Ippatsu to anyone who asks! I recommend this Salon. My hair was taken care of by Doug usually but he left this salon about a year ago. He is an awesome hair stylist and I hardly find another stylist who can do a great job like him on my thin and soft hair, until I met JAKE! Jake saved my hair after I had two disappointed hair cuts in another salon in Champaign (don't want to mention who they are). He is fairly easy-going and caring your thoughts and concerns. He spent enough time on your appointment and was quite focused on giving you a great hair style! After I told him my bad experience in previous hair cuts he even told me to let him know if anywhere I feel unsatisfied after maybe a week and he'll do it again for free! It's exaggerating to say that the hair cut was "perfect" but I did feel so great after the hair-cut and I like my new hair style! I've been here a couple times, and gotten really excellent haircuts here (I'm male). Both times, it was Doug. The first time, I was up for a change, so I told him to do whatever struck his fancy. I pictured myself ending up with a mohawk, or a gigantic Japanese-style quiff. Instead, I got a style that worked perfectly, but I wouldn't have thought to ask for. My only quibble is the cost. If I go to a local barbershop, its less fussy, about a third or a fourth of the price, and they give you a straight razor shave afterwards. Granted, I end up looking like a boyscout, or local news anchor, but it does the job. I'll probably go here again next time I feel like splurging though. read more

Like so many other reviewers, I have naturally curly hair that tends to go all Roseanne Roseannadanna if not properly sculpted. Judging solely on other reviews of Ippatsu, I went out on a limb and chose Doug. This gentleman is a very skilled, talented, and pleasant indiviual who knows how to wield the scissors.
