I went to Costcutters today, and I received the best haircut and advice I have ever been given by Caryn. My hair was a complete mess, super dry and frizzy, looked very dead. I have very curly hair, and I've been trying to grow it out, but since everything has been so busy I haven't gotten the chance to properly care for it. I went to Caryn, and she immediately proved she knew what she was doing. She made my hair look and feel alive, and the cut and shaping was amazing! Having curly hair like mine can make finding a hairstylist who knows how to work with it nearly impossible, but she did the impossible. On top of all that, she was very nice and made the whole process feel so warm and light. Great conversation, great vibe all around. I have been getting my haircuts here my entire time at UIUC. these guys are fairly priced (especially on Tuesdays), give good cuts. Follow, to a T, exactly what they tell you to do with your hair. I usually get Vivian as my barber, so definitely ask for her (if she still works there, have no been since the Pandemic began), but I definitely have not had a bad experience with the barbers there as well, so anyone you get is usually good. I got a haircut here a couple weeks ago and I definitely liked it for sure! Prices were good and the barbers were definitely attentive when I was explaining to them how I wanted my hair to be cut. Not worth $17. The person cutting my hair spent 3 mins cutting it. The person turned the electronic trimmers on and took off way too much hair immediately. I wanted the employee to cut it with scissors but I didn't have a chance to tell them. Overall, the side to top fade is uneven and they missed hairs around both of my ears. Like the other reviewer, I'm a ~30 y/o male who just wanted a pretty simple haircut w/ no styling. There was a little bit of a wait but no more than 10-15 minutes. The stylist understood just what I was looking for and I was all done in about 15 minutes. The rate has gone up slightly from the 2007 review -- the price is now $11 on Tuesdays -- but this price also applies on Wed which is pretty great. A fine haircut in the C-U area for cheap means I'll be back in about 45 days for another one. read more

I came in on a Tuesday after booking an appointment earlier in the day. Thanks to another person's review, I heard about the special which offers $12 haircuts on Tuesdays. When I called Cost Cutters, they also mentioned the lower price. Hannah was my stylist and she did an excellent job! She seated me in a timely manner, made sure she knew exactly what I wanted, and was super friendly and easy-going. I ended up getting a pixie cut, and it turned out looking pretty close to what I expected. It took less than 30 minutes with great results. I first went to cost cutters a year ago with a stylist I haven't seen in a while and was very happy with my cut so I decided to return when I was in town again next summer. I got two inches taken off and within two weeks, I had split ends. I went with a different stylist a few months later and got four inches taken off and not even a week later, I have split ends again! Their scissors must be terribly dull and I would not recommend this place at all! read more

My son just have a very ugly hair cut there... that young girl with blonde hair does it. I called them and asked them what style of that only left center top hair and surrounding cut off. They told me they did follow my son's order and if he doesn't like it because he didn't tell them well. When I pick up my boy and I told them it doesn't looks right. whatever they blame my 13 years old boy didn't say it and my boy just want to get out the store.... We won't go there any more. Oh... my boy said: he asked side shorter and front longer ... don't they need the communication while cutting a customer's hair and just told me a lot of people like this style. The staff always seem to enjoy their job. They are very friendly and hospitable the moment you walk in the door. $11 Tuesdays is the best deal I have been able to find in the Champaign area. The stylists are great at asking questions and making sure they cut your hair exactly the way you want it. Deserves lower than 1 star rating. Absolutely HORRIBLE service. The worst I've ever experienced. I've been there a couple times, and the cut was fine once, just plain bad the second time (uneven). But the service and attitude when calling was absolutely horrific, every time, and not even worth any of the savings. I asked if I should make an appointment, and the woman (I believe she said her name is Melonie) said with a really bad attitude "appointment?! (as if she were disgusted by the thought)... Um... hold on..." She put me on hold randomly, and when she came back, she asked for the time of the appointment. When I told her/asked about certain days I heard no response and went on to say "hello?... hello?" a couple times. Then I realized she was talking in the background and had left the phone completely and randomly. She came back to it, and asked again "when do you want to make the appointment?" I told her I had been telling her after the last time she asked me, but that I'd just rather take my business elsewhere at this point since she walked away from the phone after asking me when I wanted to make an appointment. read more

This location is absolutely the worst place I have ever gotten a cut. I sat down expecting a simple trim, but ended up leaving basically with a completely shaved head. The service was absolutely horrible, I felt as though the staff did not care at all about the outcome of my cut. When I first sat down, I asked the lady who was servicing me to cut my hair to make it shorter on the sides and a little longer on the top. I think she messed up at one point and ended up cutting everything way more than we anticipated. I decided that I didn't care too much about the length and was going to overlook it, but I noticed that the fade in the back ended up giving my head a boxy-look that I asked her to fade less noticeably into the top. She was surprisingly unwilling to understand where I was coming from and ended up wanting to hand me off to another lady. I told her that it was fine if there was nothing she could do about the box-look, and stood up to leave, but she insisted that the other lady take a look at my hair and told me to switch chairs. I sat down in the other lady's chair and apologized for the trouble. She looked at me annoyed and asked what I was talking about in the most vexed tone. I began to politely explain that I wanted the back and sides faded more evenly into the top, but added that if it was too much of a hassle or if it was impossible then I was fine with it. She ended up grabbing my head and just completely shaving my head starting from the neck, except for the very top of my head and the front. The whole time, her tone was annoyed as if I was wasting her time. After she was done, I looked at my hair and was very shocked at how she had managed to screw up my hair even more. I know if she had cared even in the slightest amount, she could have done a better job, but she was incredibly unwilling to understand what I was saying and did not see my preferences as significant at all. I saw that she was getting frustrated (although I have no idea why, my request was so minor and I was so polite the entire time), so I said it was fine and got up and left. Her condescending tone never changed, and she actually exclaimed, "Golly...God... help us all..."As if my request was somehow preposterous to her. I wanted a trim, but ended up paying $15 for someone to blindly shave my head. I would suggest no one ever go here, take your money somewhere else, where the staff actually cares about doing a good job. read more
