Ted Stevens Anchorage International Airport - 08.30.23 Alaska Yukon Moose

We flew SFO to ANC on a Monday nonstop on United…read more Once we landed we proceeded to baggage claim. On the down escalator we were greeted by a huge moose. We picked up our check in luggage and proceeded to the taxis outside of arrivals. It was less expensive than a ride share with dynamic pricing in place. Also it would have meant pulling our luggage to another level which was inconvenient. Our taxi ride to our Marriott Anchorage downtown hotel was less than 15 minutes from ANC.

You'll never forget where you are with the taxidermy Alaskan animals, the signs, and the shops all reminding visitors where you are. The layout is extremely easy to navigate with clear way-finding signage. Check-in is easy and painless, luggage is easy to find. Every time I've been here everything is on time. TSA lines can grow significantly long during the summer and the airport can become quickly crowded during that time, so don't press your luck during tourist high season. It has plenty of restaurants and quick convenience shops. Last minute tourist shops are here as well, but nothing you can't live without. Airports are always tricky to review because often you don't get a choice. But I truly like this airport because it is so easy to navigate.

Alaska Railroad - Waiting for Train - Standing Room Only

A relaxing, spectacular train trip through Alaskan untouched beauty...cliffs, inlets, mountains,…read moreglaciers, forest land...with moose, mountain goats, eagles, trumpeter swans...nowhere on earth can compare. Train is comfortable, quiet with a smooth 4 hour ride each direction. Excellent observation cars and smart, informative and funny tour guides. Alex and Hillary were fabulous! Food is yummy too! Vern the Conductor was absolutely The Best! We really enjoyed getting to know him...and to see how he inspires his young crew mates to be future train conductors/professionals too. Highly recommend Viator...tickets less expensive due to group rate but same service as buying from AK Railroad directly. Don't miss this experience from Anchorage to Seward.

(Review Cross-Posted to Trip Advisor)…read more We booked with Alaska Railroad specifically because they advertised a military discount. Unfortunately, they don't extend that discount to 100% disabled veterans. When we arrived, we were unexpectedly charged an additional $50. The depot was overcrowded with far too few seats, and passengers were expected to tag their own luggage outside before boarding. For the price they charge, the experience felt disorganized and underwhelming. Paying $240 for two one-way tickets was already excessive, especially after learning from our Uber driver that the same trip would have cost about $150. To top it off, the staff was neither understanding nor accommodating. We won't be using Alaska Railroad again, and I can't recommend it to others.

(We don't have any water to navigate from, so there you go.) The novelty and necessity of the floatplane in Alaska though, that's legendary stuff. This lake has the largest and busiest collection of floatplanes in the world and is certainly something you want to check out while in Anchorage. You'll hear them take off all day long, so go over and see what all the noise is about! The lake itself is charming and reminds me of the lakes in Vermont. Surrounded by colorful trees in the fall, the colorful planes and their little sheds just make a great photo op. I'm a pro photographer and really did like seeing the planes all ready to go on that glassy lake...good stuff. I also like that the planes aren't just for fun, although you can certainly take a flightseeing tour from here. The planes deliver all sorts of things and people to remote areas of Alaska and are likely the link in a really necessary chain for living out here. It's fun to stay while in the parking area and see them come and go. The pilots are really skilled and navigate the transition from sea to sky effortlessly!

We sat a The Deck restaurant and watched while we ate dinner and the next day parked on the road across the lake near the Anchorage airport to photograph the planes.

Delta Air Lines - This is what Alaska is known for! Bears and elk

Delta Air Lines

Delta: please keep copying Alaska Airlines…read more On a scale of United to 10, Delta gets a 5.5. Delta is OK. It's usually a bit cheaper than Alaska Airlines. It's not quite as good though. I'm frugal grandpa and even I think it's worth paying a little extra to fly on Alaska Airlines. Why? Delta has craft beer and food like Alaska, except they're always out of everything good. No fancy brews for you, Bud/Miller/Coors or water! The seats are cramped compared to Alaska. The free media player in every seat is nice, but the video constantly skips every 20-30 seconds. I found myself just waiting for the next skip to happen, rather than being engaged in the content. Gogo inflight WiFi is worse than Chinese water torture (OK, this is a problem on all flights, I admit) The flight attendants are a bit absent-minded and/or loopy. The best part about Delta is that you can use your Alaska Airlines' frequent flier mileage number INSTEAD of Delta's, which you should do.

Alaska, I love you and in the case of Delta I have to say the same…read more.. Its all good here. Great gate agents, now in B concourse and generally always on time. I get a kick out of the mass of humanity that accumulates in preparation for red-eye flights in and out of ANC. Most of the year, Delta's flights out of ANC depart around 1am immediately following a flight arrival...the terminals are like half way houses for travelers, tourists and other wandering sorts who find themselves out of their hotel or home at a time when they are normally expecting to be asleep. Delta does a good job of keeping the chaos to a minimum, getting the planes loaded and in and out on time. However, there was that one time that a complete drunk made it on board and passed out in an emergency exit row...that was almost comical to watch the flight crew coerse him out of his seat so that a competant individual could man the emergency exit in the event of an emergency. I wanted to beat the idiot sensless but he was already there so why waste the energy, right? These are Delta jets here too so no small planes and generally great on-board service. The flight attendants keep liquored up in the front and sufficiently satisfied in the back to make it through the typically 5 hour flight from ANC to the lower 48. I have flown other airlines in and out of Alaska and find that Delta gives me the best service, best opportunity to upgrade and reliable departures. Oh yah, during the peak travel season they throw in some extra day time departures too...but be prepared to pay for the atypical travel times to Alaska.
