Do not come to this hospital if you are experiencing an emergency. My insulin pump broke late at night and I couldn't reach my doctor after-hours. Since there's no 24-hour pharmacy in Ogden to pick up syringes and a longer-acting insulin alternative, it was the ER or bust, so I went to McKay-Dee. The ER was gross. It was unorganized. I explained my situation and was left to wait for three hours, behind people who apparently had headcolds. Now, a diabetic without insulin may not *look* sick, but after three hours I was approaching Danger Zone, so I let the nurse know (again). Still, I waited. Then I'm taken into a back room where they try to give me an IV and think I'm a newly-diagnosed diabetic. They refuse to listen to me explain otherwise and threaten to call security because I'm not cooperating. (WTF?) I demand to see a supervisor, explain that I'm really only there to get a new prescription, and I'm finally given a doctor. The ER doc outright tells me that he has no idea how to help me, but he's sure he can find someone to call. I try to explain that I already know exactly what I need - a bottle of longer-acting insulin and some syringes and some guidance on how to convert my normal dosage into this new insulin. Google on my Blackberry was far more helpful. Once I got insulin back in my system, I was (unsurprisingly) eventually hypoglycemic, and the nurse refused to let me get juice. Now, I don't expect any hospital staff to be fully in-the-know about every disease in existence. However, if I hadn't advocated strongly for myself, I would have been in a coma. Twice. No joke. Diabetes is not a rare disease, and it scares me that so many medical professionals had no idea how to handle the situation. read more

In December of 2019 I visited the Intermountain Healthcare emergency room. While in the care of the staff, doctors and nurses I spent over two hours in a private room with very few visits. When I was visited by the attending physician, Dr. Nelson, his demeanor was very unprofessional, confrontational, and distrustful. I was diagnosed bipolar 2 disorder in 2018 and was between residences for several months before I moved in with family in Provo, Utah. With no established medical care in a new, unfamiliar area, I felt I had no choice but to visit the ER due to extreme depression and to make sure I was able to stay on stabilizing medications. I visited the emergency room to get an emergency refill on a non-narcotic prescription I have taken for years that I have been told not to stop taking because of its life threatening side-effects. I recently acquired my medical records from my visit at Intermountain Healthcare. After careful review of the documents, I have found that Dr. Nelson lied about me on my medical records and his unprofessional behavior in the emergency room was discriminatory and based on a diagnosis that I do not have. I asked to have my Lamictal prescription refilled as it is necessary to maintaining my mental health. He put in my medical records that I hadn't been taking it and he "advised against restarting it". I had not stopped taking it. I needed a refill because I was almost out and having a very difficult time. He told me to stop taking a life saving medication cold turkey. If I had stopped taking it cold turkey as he suggested, I would have been even more depressed, psychotic, and would possibly have seizures as well. If anything, he should have referred me to a physician who could help or sent me to an emergency mental health hospital for acute care. Dr. Nelson is not a psychiatrist. In my chart, he wrote in an diagnosis for borderline personality disorder and claimed my behavior (being upset about not being able to have my life saving medication) was due to this disorder. He also claimed that I changed and fabricated my stories while I was there, implying in my chart that it was due to this disorder (one I do not have). I was not visited by a staff psychologist, social worker or other doctor who could have advised him on such a diagnosis. I have since received follow up care and I am feeling better. I don't have BPD. I have never been diagnosed with BPD. I have bipolar 2 disorder and OCD. His uninformed diagnosis reduced the quality of my care by other attending physicians and nurses. The treatment I received at the hands of Dr. Nelson left me feeling even worse than I had felt when I came in to the emergency room. He stated that I have BPD in these records and to my nurses to invalidate my feelings and reactions to what happened. This is blatant discrimination and disgusting behavior from a doctor. I am concerned about the other patients that Dr. Nelson is seeing. If he treated me with such unprofessionalism based on a diagnosis that had no basis, he most likely treats other patients the same way or even worse. *Copy of the complaint email I sent to Intermountain Healthcare I DO NOT recommend visiting this hospital. Average treatment, better room, but billing is atrocious, it seems like they want to extort money by sending paid bills to collections ( also a terrible agency ) without notice to the patient. Avoid if you have a choice. read more

I went to IHC because I felt like I had something stuck in my throat. After extensive research, I figured I had Gerd. I told the Doctor this and he did his examinations. He told me that he DID think it was Gerd, but wanted me to get a scope done. He referred me to another doctor who did the scope. Come to find out, I was right Gerd. Treatment is an antacid. Now, instead of a $300 medical bill, it's a $2600 medical bill. Not only that, but my insurance is crap so they payed very little toward the procedure. I called to see if we could negotiate the price a little due to me being pretty strapped for cash and they will not negotiate price. Plus, not only do they not negotiate price, when you do a payment plan, they charge interest. What a horrible experience. I will never use an IHC affiliate again. They're in the business of making money, not of helping people. read more

In July of this year, I paid off a $12,000 bill in full. After my account had a zero balance, a health share group sent them an additional $6,000 payment, resulting in an overpayment of $6,000 on my account. After months of back and forth, IHC refuses to refund the over payment. First they claimed not to have received it. When I presented them with the check number, they confirmed receipt but then claimed I had not paid off my bill in full. When presented with account statements proving payment in full, they had no explanation but claimed nobody with authority to handle the situation was available to talk. When I asked for the voicemail of someone with authority, they transferred me to a line that automatically hung up on me. IHC is attempting to steal my money. read more

Nurses are great here.... but oh my goodness the billing is so dreadful. I think I have an ulcer from all the stress the billing department has created. I receive on average ~3 bills per month; all of them are for exorbitant amounts of money. I call in and they tell me to ignore the bill while they fix their system. I do this, only to be surprised for another incorrect bill at my doorstep. It's a fun game I get to play each month; "what fictional hospital bill do I get today?" I feel truly terribly for folks who just give in to paying these incorrect bills. Certainly makes me question, if a hospital can't get billing right, what other things are they not getting right? Anyhow, I would rather live with my stress-induced ulcer than go back to the hospital and go the rounds with billing again. read more

I would actually give this hospital and its billing services zero stars if possible!! They have the same account numbers for multiple places in the hospital i.e. labs, medical, financial services. The only difference is the first three numbers. Well if you pay with bill pay, you do not see the first three numbers and just submit the payment to the general account number that encompasses all of them. You would think that the billing department would be able to see that when a check comes in and you don't have a balance owing for that particular department they could send or deposit it in the correct account (they are all linked). Nope, they just take the money and keep it as a credit. Meanwhile I continue to get a bill for an amount I had already paid twice!!! Now to be fair and technical I did not pay it to the "exact" account number but when I make a phone call to the number on the bottom of the invoice they say they have no idea where the money went. They tell me to call Financial services who in turn tell me they don't see the payment either. They tell me to call Medical, who does not see the payment. This all happens in one month so I get frustrated with them and pay the amount AGAIN!! Even though the amount clearly shows it has come out of my bank account and gone to IHC and disappeared. I should be covered now correct? Nope, the next month the EXACT same thing happens again! This time I talk to someone with some customer service experience in the Lab part of IHC (which is where the money is really owed) and she says, and I repeat, "you probably sent it to another one of our accounts like financial services or medical. You need to call them and see if they have it." At this time I inform her of what I have gone through the month before and she nicely suggests she could call the other departments and see if they received the money by mistake (I told you they are connected). She comes back to me and says that Financial Serives and Medical Services do not show any record of receiving this payment. So what are my choices? I now have proof of the payment being paid twice from my bill pay with confirmation numbers but I STILL owe the amount? I decided to call financial services myself one more time, wait on hold for 20 minutes, and finally speak with a customer service person that can actually see my most recent payment!! OMG its a miracle. Now they will TRY to transfer over the credit they show over to THEIR lab department. I say it again TRY. This is not rocket science. It is simple bookkeeping. I can only hope that my payment will somehow magically make its way to the right department and pray that I never need to use the services at this Hospital again for fear of the nightmare of the billing department. read more
