On our single night in Wellington, we stayed at the Intercontinental in town, largely because it looked like it was centrally located and near the water. Suffice to say, it was more than adequate and sufficiently met our needs. Checking in slightly early was no problem - our room was ready ahead of time - and the staff at the front desk and the concierge were pretty friendly folks. The elevators have a key reader that is not readily apparent to access other floors, but without a label it was a bit difficult to figure out at first how to get to other floors. The room itself is very nicely appointed, with modern finishes, particularly the bathroom. Some of the dressers seemed to be a bit old / a little shaky, but it definitely is not anything to worry about. The view is great from the room; we had chosen a harbor-view room, and you have a great view of the bay, and with an east-facing room, you will have a nice load of sunshine filtering into the room when you wake up. It also feels a bit bigger than your typical room as well, with plenty of space to park multiple suitcases without feeling cramped. One amenity I did find puzzling that was not in the rooms was a safe; as an international traveler, it would have been nice to have somewhere to throw our passports and other important documents without needing to keep them on our person.
Overall, this was a very pleasant experience, and given its proximity to the waterfront (which is nice to stroll on) and other parts of downtown, you don't need a car to get around town. Breakfast was included, and on the way out we ate at Chameleon...pretty standard European buffet, nothing to write home about but nice that it was included, particularly because it was a holiday week and many things were not open in the morning. I would recommend staying here for anyone, whether on business or for leisure. read more
