If you have a child that has special learning needs, we found that this business does not appear to…read morehave the desire or ability to help children learn at their own pace. There is no orientation for parents to teach them the different levels, no group communication with parents that keep you updated on the curriculum. Our son was promoted in belts and no feedback was given until finally he was put on the spot and was unable to perform the maneuvers. When I reached out to the instructors, they did not provide any constructive means of helping our son succeed, they did not seem to want to keep our business. He was the first of four children as well. I was simply told he does not focus in class after numerous belt promotions. The curriculum seems sporadic and if you miss some classes your child will most likely not be able to perform when the time comes they put them on the spot. There are a lot of reviews on here about being welcome, but it felt as though my son was not really treated as such being a unique little boy. He seemed to be a nuisance towards the instructors. It is unfortunate as we are truly involved in supporting other families and small businesses. At the last class for my son, despite being promoted in belt, he was told to go in front of the class and perform multiple maneuvers, most of which I know he had not been shown. My son froze at the front of the class as the instructor repeated the name of the maneuver he was supposed to do. No help was offered to him until he finally was overwhelmed and embarrassed and began to cry. At which point he was simply told to go sit with me. When I contacted the owner, I was informed he had trouble focusing in class (which is true as he is on the spectrum). However, no compromises were offered, it did not seem they cared about keeping our business. Despite there reportedly being extra training offered on Fridays, this was not offered to us. It all seemed quite awkward and not family-like at all. The onus was put on me to tell them how they can help, despite me not being an expert in karate instruction. Sometimes their family members come in to help instruct, but it can be awkward. My son likes to talk about his faith (its fine if others don't have a faith), but despite my son mentioning God, one of their relatives shouted from the front desk to my 8 yr old, "how about you keep that at church". What is interesting is you apparently must do pushups if you say the Lord's name in vain at this dojo. My son on multiple occasions would come up to the instructor and tell her something he thought was interesting (though in reality it was irrelevant), rather than redirect my son she would just look at him in a deadpan snarky way and say "OK" which clearly showed to an adult she did not care. I am uncertain if my son noticed this mannerism as he is a child. Those are a couple of strange experiences that my child also had to experience. It is unfair of me to not point out some good, my son was encouraged on one occasion when he excelled at one maneuver, and he was sent a postcard for his birthday. The young instructors, one of which is the daughter of the owners, were always kind and courteous to my son. For these reasons I am giving 2 stars. I would advise researching a few places before you put your time, effort, and money into this establishment.

She also didn't have much confidence and wouldn't stand up for herself which left her susceptible to being bullied at times. Needless to say, it was hard to watch as a father because I felt helpless. Less than a year into training with Proffessor Anthony, her personality had gone through the roof with confidence. By that time she had a solid Jiu-Jitsu foundation, and had even begun to compete and win in tournaments! And it all started to show big in her personal life, personal relationships, and just overall happiness. Today my daughter continues to thrive, battle, and win Jiu-Jitsu tournaments! She is still that sweet girl that she always was, but in addition is now very proud and confident. She no longer has problem making friends and now quickly and easily stands up for herself and others. The discipline and confidence of learning Jiu-Jitsu has also spilled over into school as she's a straight A student. I can't stress how much I recommend having a child join Motive. Just recently we signed up our 6 year old son and I look forward to proudly watch him grow into this journey as well. Professor Anthony is awesome with the kids! He has a great balance of fun, and learning a real effective martial art that you will keep with you for life. For the competitive minded, Proffesor Anthony encourages optional tournaments for his students where he prepares and coaches them for succes. Team Motive has often finished tournaments in the top 5 out of 45 plus schools. Words can't describe how proud I am to watch my daughter compete and perform complex submissions that I've watched pro fighters in the UFC do! 4 years ago I never would have even imagined her doing the things she does now!!!

I love Motive Jiujitsu and now hope to be a jiujitsu world champion! If I could put more stars then I would do 100000/10.

I did tons and tons of research into authentic martial arts schools in northern Colorado (north of Denver, specifically). LWK is a small-ish dojo that will actually teach your child respect, discipline, work ethic, and confidence. It's not a place to send your kids for half a year only to quit when getting promoted to their third belt level is too hard. The instructors pay so much attention to detail and are even handed in having both junior and senior students polish their forms. They're also very approachable, offering up direct assessments upon request in class based on student concerns. There is an opportunity at the end of every class to get instructor feedback so you/your student will know what to work on. They are transparent about the costs, with no huge jump from the introductory period to the first official month. You can find both the tuition rates and class schedule on the website and see if it will work for you before joining. There are family discounts and a weapons class was recently added to the roster. Another area where LWK is awesomely transparent is that they have pamphlets on how belt promotions work: what forms/moves are the students expected to master. That way you have a clear idea of how to move forward. This is because LWK has been around for thirty years, which says a lot. This is an environment where the students do traditional Japanese martial arts warm ups, learn the Japanese names of their forms (nothing overwhelming), bow to each other when entering the mat/sparring/leaving class/demonstrating their forms at the end of class, where senior classmates voluntarily help junior classmates, where they recite a code of honor at the beginning and end of every class, where expectations are clear, and hard work is the norm. If you/your student are looking for a place with learned teachers, a decades long tradition of quality instruction, old school values of dedication/respect, and a welcoming-and-self-challenging environment in which to train, this is it. As with everything, you will only ever get what you put into it. 15 minutes per day of at-home practice never hurt anyone. I hope that this is giving the reader a sense of what the school is like and that it's set up for students to succeed. Everything is transparent, the tuition is reasonable (and many forms of payment are accepted), to eliminate obstacles to joining so the student and their family can just focus on their work and progress. Progress is enriched here because LWK is highly involved in the authentic Karate community in northern Colorado. They're among the handful that host a tournament every year, judging certification clinics are held here, and the recent inclusion of the kobudo (weapons) class shows a commitment to exposing students to Karate as a whole. Signing up to LWK is to join a Karate ecosystem with peers to challenge you/your student towards betterment. My only complaint is that the complimentary uniforms are affordable due to being cotton/polyester blends, and plastic-based synthetic fabrics are highly environmentally damaging in the wash because they shed lots of microplastics that wreck oceans and inevitably come back to harm the human biosphere as well. If you're a person who is committed to slowing climate change and believe that human behavior has been immoral on this topic, then I'd recommend looking into 100% cotton uniforms and belts before signing up for LWK.

I have mixed feelings about this place…read more On the one hand, the instructors are excellent. The young guys (who both attend and teach here) are especially good with the kiddos and they seem like have really learned how to carry themselves, beyond just leaning karate. But the business side of Scornavacco is tricky. After a trial period, you have to commit to a year agreement. And it is virtually impossible to get out of. Which is tough because kids change. They can lose interest. Our kid had some schedule changes that made coming here almost impossible. But we couldn't get out of the commitment, even though these appointments were medically related. When you push, they refer you to the payment company that you sign the contract with and then autobills you. That company will tell you that you actually signed a promissory note which legally obligates you for the full length of time and amount. I checked my documentation and didn't realize that's what we were getting into. I thought that, like a health club, if circumstances changed you could get out of it. But no. You're locked and bound. The kicker is that the finance company told me that Scornavacco picked this payment deal. they offer multiple types of billing services, not just ones that are bound by a promissory note, but that's what they chose to go with. So if you want quality karate instruction for your kid, this place is really good. But make damn sure you and your kid can commit to the full year, because there's no escape.
