My husband and I discovered this wonderful shop, when we needed to trade in our granddaughter's 3/4 size violin for an adult 4/4 size violin within two days. We were referred by our daughter, who had frequented the store. We walked into this Batavia Music store not knowing anything about violins beside the basic stuff, and left with a wealth of knowledge. Tom (owner) is very pleasant; we enjoyed doing business with him. We were quite surprised that he bought an old violin from us, before we settled on anything he had in his inventory. He helped us make the right decision quality and price. It was a joy to be in the presence of so many beautiful instruments and an owner who really cares about his work. A great, locally owned business located in downtown Batavia. There is a wide variety of instruments to be found here, but mostly guitars. They also offer music lessons (guitar, harmonica...). The only thing to beware of is the somewhat odd hours they keep. read more

Got an amazing violin that was perfect for me and it was a fantastic price, got all the essential accessories and he even let me choose which bow, fantastic small business you can play and test all the instruments ask all your questions and they are patient. I used to love this music store. Come in all the time, say hello check out the orchestral instruments. But as soon as i came to the store the other day to check out violas, as i am interested in buying one and seeing their choices, the owner of the store was very rude to me because I did not have a parent present. It seemed as if he didn't think a teenager was responsible enough to look at a viola. He thought I was stealing, and I have never stole in my life. Honestly, the place is messy and unorganized. I was not impressed when I first walked in the store as it is a cluttered, but after meeting the owner and playing some of the guitars I began to change my mind. This is an awesome store if you are a player looking for a diamond in the ruff guitar. I have purchased five guitars, 2 amps and have sold 2 guitars over the past few months. This is really what every guitar shop should be.Forget guitar center and the other chain music stores. Over-commercialized slop if you ask me. The Instrument Exchange is a guitar players Guitar shop. They carry mostly used guitars and lower to mid-end stuff, but their selection is good, prices reasonable (and often negotiable) and advice honest. You can shoot in and ask a few quick questions, or spend an afternoon strumming every 6 string in the place. They also deal in bass guitars, drum sets, cymbals, accessories and the occasional oddball like wind instruments and accordions. Call first on those tho if you are not from the area. Their Saturday Swap is also popular, and you would be surprised what sort of stuff wanders in for sale or trade. I like to visit late on Saturdays to get first pick of what they may have gotten in that day. The owner Tom also drives a delivery route during the day, so the Instrument Exchange typically is not open until after about 4:00 pm on weekdays and all day Saturday. Lessons in guitar, bass, drum, keyboard, and even vocal and harmonica are available at very reasonable rates, and for all skill levels. I scheduled a lesson for my young daughter- who was extremely excited to start the violin. The lesson was scheduled for Sat morning @11am. When I entered the storefront I was barely greeted by a gentleman in the first lesson closet. He did not get up or even acknowledge my presence until I poked my head in to say that we were here for a lesson. He replied with an unenthusiastic "that'd be with D___- she's not here yet but usually teaches in the back room." We waited and I kept my daughter occupied in the very small and cluttered store. Around 11:10a another gentleman entered the store, walked behind the counter. It took him a couple of minutes to notice that I was there and asked if there was anything he could help me with. I explained that we had a lesson scheduled- he checked that teacher's calendar and sure enough- there it was- highlighted! Without an apology he said, 'let me see if I can get her on the phone'- he tried and no answer. He then came over and said that he thought she had some test that morning- but would just schedule me for the following week and let her know. That was it. No apology.... No sign of remorse for the situation- nothing. I then had to explain to my little girl that the lesson (that she was pumped for the entire week) had been cancelled....because the teacher forgot. Traded in an old flute for a banjo - the owner gave me the value straight from the pricing guide (extremely fair for a 10+ yr old flute that needed some adjustments). This is a great place to purchase any string instrument! Also, a great place to sell instruments. I traded in a bass guitar for an electric guitar. If trading in, you get a better price. The estimate that the owner gave me for my instruments was EXTREMELY fair. Honest dealer. There is a HUGE selection of instruments to choose from. Walking into the store I had resigned myself to the fact that I would feel "short changed and taken advantage of" when selling our used instruments. But our experience was completely the opposite. The owner was AWESOME! My son wanted to exchanged his electric guitar from his grade school years for an accustic guitar - I long deserved hobby to take his mind off of the fact that he has recovered for a 16 month medical condition. The owner made our day! He encouraged my son and gave us a fair trade - way more than we thought we would ever do. This place is the best!! read more
