What a wonderful person and amazing at the job! bring any shoe over and he's your guy!

The owner is violent. He ripped my shoe boxes out of my hand crushing them and his work both. This was all because I questioned his work and wanted to add something to what he had done. Rather than work with me he belittled me and began yelling ultimately ripping my items from my hands until I paid him. The incomplete work he did is nice, but nothing will make up for how horrible he behaves. Had he kept his cool and discussed with me like a rational person, I would have brought him much more work. But sadly, he's unsafe and impossible to work with. read more

I have never been so rattled and intimidated by a business proprietor as I was today. I had been a customer for several years and was always pleased with his craftsmanship Approximately 6 months ago or so, I went to Instant Shoe to discuss repairing the inside of a valuable pocketbook. At that time, he quoted me $40.00. I told him I would think about it. I returned today with the pocketbook and was told he wouldn't touch it for less than $125.00-$150.00. That's a huge increase. He does not have a price list available to the public. I believe he makes up the prices and he goes. I reminded him that he quoted me $40.00 months ago and he called me a liar, saying it was longer that a couple months. We all know how times flies, so maybe it was more than several months. Irregardless, it was the same pocketbook in the same condition when he quoted me $40.00 Then he went on a rant of how expensive his products have increased. I brought an item in to replace an 8 inch zipper and he told me it would be $95! When I told him it was more than I could afford, he just turned around and walked away quickly. I then told him that was a very high price and he yelled at me and said "I have to make a living!" I told him I heard he had a good reputation and he yelled something back at me before I walked out the door. I don't care how talented he is in his profession. My friend dropped off a handbag at this shop and was quoted $150 for a repair which seemed exorbitant, but she went ahead and made a deposit of $75. Her husband then became gravely ill and passed away. Several months later she returned to pick up her bag and was told that he no longer had it and that it had been "donated". He also expected her to pay the other $75...?! So $150 and no bag....? When she explained her husband had become ill and passed away, and she was only now able to retrieve the bag, he became irate, saying he "had things going on in his life too"...As others have shared, this man is unhinged, angry and overdue for retirement. I brought in a brand new pair of dancing shoes that had soles which were nice and cushiony, but too sticky to allow smooth pirouettes. I asked Alex to replace the soles with a split-leather sole ... problem solved. Amazing job Alex. Pricey, but well worth the cost. read more

I brought in three pairs of boots and was shocked by how rude the owner was. He quoted me $150-200 to resole one of the pairs - I was really surprised by that number and that's when he got rude. "How much do you want to pay" he kept saying. I was not rude to him, just surprised as I had never been to a cobbler before. He was very dismissive and when I had him look at the other two pairs, it was evident he'd already made up his mind about doing business with me and was throwing out really high numbers. He didn't even look over the shoes. I am not going to pay $75 to clean suede boots that I bought at Marshalls for $30. It's possible that he does very good work, but I don't care to give him the business due to his negative attitude and outrageous pricing. He must have plenty of business to treat people this way who are hoping to use his services. read more

He has restored two vintage handbags for me and does excellent work. Prices are fair and turnaround time is quick. I have attached some before and after photos so you can see how he turned my bag around. It took four rounds of dying and treatment to take a 15-year-old bag (with lambskin which is more fragile than cowhide) with lots of visible wear and tear and restoring it to almost like-new. I paid to have it treated so it is scratch and water-resistant. After reading some of the other reviews I'm going to add some thoughts. This work is not necessarily cheap but that doesn't mean that he is overpriced. When you pay $20 for a five minute job, you have to take into account the expertise and years of effort it took to get to a place where someone is able to do that job so quickly. When you go to the doctor and pay (together with insurance) over $100 for them to look at a mole quickly and conclude it's not concerning, that doesn't mean it's not worth over $100 for that two minutes of work. I'm disappointed with the devaluing of artisan labor I'm reading here. As to his attitude, he has always been friendly with me and willing to explain exactly what he's doing to justify the price. I was charged $250 for one bag and $450 for another. I asked why one was more expensive and he explained that the second took multiple rounds of dying to restore color where the first one did not. When I balked a bit he offered me a deal at $400 if I was willing to pay in full up front, which I did. I am so happy with the quality of the work, this guy is clearly a master craftsman and people who master their work get to charge accordingly. read more

Brought my seriously scuffed almost brand new boot to this shop to see if anything could be done. The owner was wonderful ! Took my boot immediately out to his workshop, glued down the ripped pieces and buffed it. It looks amazing! This was my second time attempting to utilize this business. Both experiences were horrible. The owner reminds me of a carnival barker trying to get you into his tent. Prices are absolutely ridiculous. First time I went there to get a leather jacket conditioned he quoted me $500 Saying how he is better than everybody else. I was just shocked at the price and decided against doing it. Just went there to see how much it would be to get a canvas bag that needed about a half inch worth of stitching since it was coming loose. He picked it up and said minimum charge of $35. I left. I requested an estimate to repair a handbag to file a claim. He said he didn't know the cost but it would need to be replaced. When asked to get this in writing with a signature to show that the advice came from a reputable business, he refused and took all his business cards away. When asked about repairing a pair of shoes and possibly old furniture, he quoted a steep price of $45 for the shoes. We told him it would not be worth it, and he became irritable and stand-off ish. He then made a snarky comment along the lines of "how can you expect to pay for furniture repair then." Terrible customer service, I'd advise people to go elsewhere. read more

I went there with a laptop bag to replace a zipper and a pair of mens shoes to be re-soled. I have had many pairs of mid tier (Coach, Johnston & Murphy, Gucci) mens shoes repaired in the past - a cobbler that retired in Lynn, then I went to downtown Peabody which is also closed now. Today I went to Instant shoe repair, the first thing I was asked is how much do you want to spend, than he proceeds to tell me the bag zipper repair will be a few hundred dollars (it was 75 dollars four years ago in Peabody) and the shoes to be re-soled with leather soles would be about 250 - 300 to fix. I went in this am with a pair of boots that needed leather sown next to a zipper. I was quoted $150. I did need them for the next day so I asked when they would be done. I then tried to coordinate the pick up with my husband as he gets out of work earlier than me; when I told him I just wanted to see if my husband could grab the boots he started yelling at me. He told me I was a liar and that if I needed them I should be able to pick them up. When I told him I worked late, he told me clearly my husband was smarter than me. I entered this shop for the first and last time today. I asked the owner for a price quote to fix a broken shoe and when looking at my shoes he stuck his pen into the other shoe and caused damage to the other shoe that was fine when I walked in and told me it "needed to be repaired now too". He told me he wanted $45 cash on the spot now to fix now both shoes and when I told him that I wanted to look up how much a new pair would cost to buy before I chose to fix it for that price his response was, "no you cannot come back later. I will refuse the service to you. You come back later and I will be closed to you. This is same day service. You pay me cash now or you leave." I'm not sure who raised this man or why he is so angry, but I would never recommend entering his business, because you will just leave aggravated and turned away for being a consumer. read more

I brought Alex two pairs of beloved Clark's desert boots (leather) that I had worn into the ground over years. Another local show repair place even refused to even try to fix them. Alex resoled them, added leather insoles, repaired a damaged toe, and completely reconditioned the leather on both pairs. It's like I have brand new boots. I've been going to this store for a couple of years now, and while sometimes it feels like the prices are higher than I'd expect it doesn't mean that his work isn't worth it. I've had straps on bags fixed, and the heels on shoes fixed. I took a vintage pair of leather harness boots that were about 30 years old and suffering some problems but were favorites of mine, and he made them better than new - my 1 year old granddaughter will probably be able to wear these boots when she grows up if she wanted to.. yes it was $200+ to do the work but I wear the boots now and am happy I invested in their care because...I love them. Reviews mention his personality and while he's at times eccentric and his sense of humor is rather unusual and not for the faint of heart if you want expensive shoes fixed this guy will do the job. read more

I told him I'm not sure if it's worth it for that price in my case, but thanks anyways. He went on a tirade! Came in to get a boot zipper, boot wheels repair, and cleaning. All together $55, without the cleaning it would have been $40. You have to come in to get an estimate of how much it would be to repair your item. Alex(repair man) explained why the zipper broke and fixed my shoes in a timely manner.
