Safelite has won my business…read more Things I learned about auto glass this week: 1) Insurance often pays to replace small cracks without you paying towards your deductible. When a rock from a construction truck cruises at you and pings a beautiful little starburst in your windshield, call your insurance and make an auto glass claim. So long as the windshield doesn't have to be replaced, it's often part of your insurance coverage. 2) The size of the crack matters. If it is smaller than a quarter, most auto glass businesses can easily fill it. If it's larger than a quarter, most businesses won't touch it because they can't fill it satisfactorily. If not a starburst, length matters. A single crack can be filled as long as it isn't longer than a dollar bill. 3) Time, temperature, and weather matter. The glass can't be filled if it's gotten wet, so cover it with Scotch tape (yup). Time gives an opportunity for the crack to grow. Extreme temps most certainly result in the crack spreading. 4) Sometimes the crack has to be reestablished (i.e., rebroken) for the techs to fill it. This is the short, edifying version of my sad tale that ended rather happily at Safelite. I started with a perfectly small starburst, but after the company my insurance initially connected me with waited for more than a day to fix it in this Oklahoma heat, the starburst grew and became unrepairable. When I finally got myself together after two more local experiences, I had lost hope that anyone could help me, but I yelped my way to Safelite for one last try. Safelite isn't covered by my insurance, but I'm going to call and ask that they be based on my experience with them. I had an appointment, which was respected. One star. * The waiting room was clean and comfortable, with free wi-fi, a tv we were told we were welcome to change, and fresh coffee. Two stars.** The employee treated me with courtesy, listened to my story, and answered my concerns. Three stars. *** Safelite explained the process and the problem to me, helping me with realistic expectations before and during the process. Four stars.**** Safelite ultimately could not repair the crack to their liking after working on it for at least 45 minutes. They filled it resin and think that will stop it from spreading, but the crack is still pretty visible. Safelite thus decided not to charge me. Five stars. ***** I usually shop local businesses, but none of the other three I encountered this week delivered the level of customer service that Safelite did. The next time I have a windshield issue, Safelite will be my go-to.

I set an onsite (my residence) appointment for windshield replacement. The whole time I have been…read morereceiving appointment confirmations mentioning how the technician will be recalibrating the windshield sensors at my home. I had an appointment from 8am - noon, but they waited until that morning to let me know that my 10 yr old Honda has to be brought in because they lack the ability to do it outside the shop. If they haven't figured out how to work on modern vehicles much less a 10 year old vehicle, just find a place with professional capabilities to actually work on average vehicles onsite or just take it to the nearest random glass shop. You'll be in same situation but closer to home since there are only two metro locations. The whole point of even considering this company is that they come to you. Maybe if you drive a go cart as I'm sure a golf cart would be too complicated for them to work on in your driveway.

A good mechanic is worth his weight in gold. And George is a really, really, really good mechanic…read more He's honest, won't up-charge, won't up-sell, and if there's something he can't do, he'll let you know. I brag about this dude to anyone who even casually mentions that they're having issues with their vehicle. Right now I'm dealing with some obnoxious and shady nonsense with a car dealer, and the one silver lining in all of it has been that I got to witness firsthand how George was willing to go to bat for me because I was one of his customers. He did a full once-over on a used vehicle I was considering, and pointed out things on the vehicle that I had not noticed at first glance. He also gave me some advice on dealing with unscrupulous car dealers, and I didn't listen and now I'm dealing with the consequences, so even there he was right. And this has just further reinforced that he's the guy to go to for everything from standard maintenance work to full-on automotive body repair (e.g. check out the excellent work that he did on my brother's car). Something tells me I'm going to need to reach out to him again very soon. But again, because it's George, I'm actually not terribly annoyed about needing his mechanic abilities or having to spend my seemingly limited paycheck on car maintenance. Because he's not just a capable mechanic. He's a good, ethical, hard-working dude who also happens to be a capable mechanic. Trust George, you guys. He is good peoples.

I'm the sort of person that people might characterize as being handy around a car until they met…read moresomeone who is handy around a car. Which makes me a great target for mechanics who want to rip me off. Combine that with my aging cars and you can almost hear the vultures circle. This is why George is such a godsend to me. When I visited him last time, he took a quick look over my car and quickly told me that I would be good not fixing anything for a while. Which is the thing that I most like in a mechanic. It was clear that he knew what he was doing, and as my cars slowly circle the drain of time, I'm confident that he will tell me what needs to be fixed, what can be fixed, and when it is time to give up the ghost. George really is a magnificent find.
