We could not be happier we joined. Kumu Derek is an excellent instructor. The children love him and his Kokua staff who help him instruct the classes. He is fun with the children, yet teaching the meaning behind the songs and dances never escape him. He does expect the best each child can give and always starts with prayer. Hugs are a common place and the children in various classes are friendly and humble. I didn't know there was such things as clicks and mean girl syndromes in other dance groups as I have never experienced this. My oldest daughter is quit shy and introverted and she has shown initiative in the past year through her experience with this Halau. Kumu Derek and his wife Yoko are always pleasant and as busy as they are, always take a moment to say hello to all the parents and keiki. Ke Ali'i o ka Malu is a gem in Waianae that builds the esteem of its members through Hawaiian dance and music

This review is in regards to the Zumba class I recently took at Studio 808…read more Studio 808 is located in the heart of Waipahu next to the iconic Leeward Drive-Inn. I've heard of Studio 808's dance programs but have never taken a class until I heard about the Zumba class being offered there. You can take the stairs or elevator to the 2nd floor and reach the studio on the Leeward Drive-Inn side. Once arriving, there is a front desk area set up in front of the studio where people were manning. You can pay in cash or Venmo (I did the mobile pay option because I didn't have cash). Fortunately, Studio 808 has also catered the Zumba class as a remote class so you can actually sign up for the class and dance from home by watching the instructor. Upon arriving to the class, the room was overall clean and spacious. Because the class is also done virtually, there wasn't many people in the room. The Zumba instructor was Erin and I have nothing but great things to say about him. As someone who isn't a dancer, Erin was kind enough to teach the lessons via virtual cam and in-person. The overall class was a lot of fun and I enjoyed the music better at Studio 808 compared to the Zumba classes I take at 24 Hour Fitness. I would definitely recommend to go with Erin because he's exudes positive energy, always smiles while breaking a sweat and definitely knows what he's doing. I was even watching the participants online (who were older folks) and they seemed to thoroughly enjoy the class at home as they would in studio. If you're up for doing a Zumba class in Waipahu (or simply at your own home), I would definitely recommend this class to take. Admission is about $7 per class but the first class is free! Classes are every Tuesday from 6-7pm.

Dark Days And Transitions…read more One of the most challenging times for any service member is not during their service but after. The transition back to civilian life isnt as smooth as everyone thinks. Many different reasons and experiences, factor into a servicemembers transition back into the real world, some are forced out, some their tenures times are up, some decide it just time to move on, some want to go back into school, while others cannot continue anymore. Regardless of whatever the reason is, this phase is one of the most difficult times any servicemenmber can experience. Some may have jobs lined up, some think they do, some go back to familes, some do not have one to go back to, some get homeless, and some unfortunatley take their own lives. Percentage of suicdes of vets in 2001 and 2020 rose to over 35% and an average of 20 veterans take their own lives every day. The question remains what happens to our servicemembers during this transitional period. These dark years can eat people alive from the inside out stemming from depression, anxiety, mental and physical disabilities incurred from service, and post tramautic stress disorder. Reources, programs, and community help services can help some of these veterans but not all can reach out the same way. The department of veteran affairs have been going through their own transformation internally, and while corruption and organization was plaguing the system, recent changes by the recent goverment has focused on improvement. Its not completely perfect yet but cant deny the huge improvements lately. I rememember when it took some vets almost a year to get seen by a physician, those days are finally past fortunately. But even with these improvements, it still takes an immense amount of effort, patience, organization, and understanding, its still not enough for our heroes. Not enough veterans know of this community resource and availability, not even me at that time. I was fortunate enough to be introduced to this Vet Center in Kapolei. (Thank You J.J., I am forever greatful) Whats the difference of this place versus the regular services by the Department of Veteran Affairs? Well for one they are not the same. They are not run by the the VA, they are non profit, and they are not bureaucratic professionals either. Most are volunteers sacrificing their time for veterans in need of dire help. They are your Battle Buddies They are your Wingmen They are your Soldiers They are your Marines They are your Shipmates They are your Brothers And Sisters in Arms They are Veterans, just like you. They are there to help guide you to where you need help. Informants and Counselors. Think of them not as the VA, but the liason to them. They are the lobby to the lobby, if you are not ready and need to take it slow, give them a chance. They can Help. They helped me. We don't need anymore casualties. If you need help, please contact them as soon as possible. To my friends Ive lost and to those dealing with PTSD, please, give them a chance. R.I.P. A.G, E.S, and N.V.
