I've been to my fair share of massage places, but I rarely find a place I like enough to visit again. This place is on that rare list! I love that this place is inconspicuous from the outside. What an amazing experience! I came for a 30 minute massage as part of a Bachelorette celebration weekend that my best friend booked. We were all greeted with compliments and told we should definitely take pictures together which actually hadn't done yet. All 3 of us were able to be seen at the same time. I chose a Swedish massage and I was not expected much pressure. But what I got was SO light that, sorry for the expression, it was like being "caressed" by a stranger for an hour. The "therapist" (Brooke) has no idea of what a Swedish massage is. I wasted 70 bucks on something that actually felt quite awkward. Put some pressure, even if light! My husband bought me a "just because" gift card to Inner Peace Spa. I've never been there before, but the Google reviews are good. The Yelp reviews on the other hand... WELL. Let me start by staying, I don't understand what's up with the low rating, guys? Here's my journey: I booked my appointment online. I could see all the services and the prices. You can choose which esthetician you want and/or what sex you'd like them to be. I left it open because I have no preference. I was assigned to Jamal for a 90 minute massage and 30 minute facial. I was initially intimidated because this place is located downtown. I thought there would be no parking, especially because the genius in me booked an appointment the same Sunday as a Bengals home game. Well, I was wrong. There was meter parking available and a parking lot right next to the place. I rang the doorbell, and they immediately buzzed me in. I took the stairs, but I don't recommend that because they do have a New York City vibe to them. (There's a elevator. Do that.) When I arrived to the third floor Sebastian Rey was there to greet me at the door. He confirmed my name, appointment time, and introduced me to Jamal, who would be doing my services. The lobby is cluttered, yes. It's full of magazines, essential oil diffusers, positive energy beads, etc. But what else do you expect from a place that boasts being all about holistic/organic massage and wellness. I totally understand their ambiance. On to the massage. Jamal was amazing. He was very thorough. He targeted the areas we discussed. One thing I'm big about is symmetry. I need one side of my body to receive the EXACT same treatment as the other. He did that. He applied just enough pressure when needed. I'd go back just for him, honestly. He did my facial. It was a series of products that were created by Sebastian Rey. Their scents were strong, but they worked very well. My skin looks and feels really happy. Overall, I'd go there again. The prices were reasonable and the service was great. I could tell by the way they spoke to me that they valued me as a customer. I thought that I already had a review for this place as I've been here a few times, but I was mistaken. Inner Peace is a great place for a massage. I used a Groupon for this past time and Ean was my massage therapist. It was the first time I've had a male massage me and I appreciated the larger hands as well as tremendous strength and pressure he was able to exert. After the massage my muscles almost hurt, but that's ok as I really wanted a deep tissue massage. If you've never had a professional massage, please get one. Your stress levels and physical well being are worth it. Don't forget to tip your massage therapist too. ;) The other massages I've had here were in their previous location. Their current location is either up a flight of stairs or via elevator in the same building shared by CityBeat and Herzog Studios. One does need to be buzzed in to the building. Parking is available at street or nearby garage/lots. IPHC also offers other therapeutic modalities and I think even mani/pedis. Great location downtown and great staff. read more

I'm by no means a massage connoisseur (the combo of usually too pricy and I'm too ticklish is what's prevented me from getting more than a handful in my lifetime) but my experience was a lot better than I expected given all the blah reviews for this place. Like most everyone else, I had a Groupon, specifically $70 for 3 hour-long Swedish massages. Pretty great deal, just keep in mind that you're still responsible for paying taxes at the end and of course gratuity. I was initially confused on booking my appointment online because it wouldn't accept my groupon code and I was hesitant about putting in my credit card info. When I called they said it wouldn't be charged, so I went ahead with it. I was able to book Shanice just an hour and a half ahead of the appointment time. Inner Peace isn't immediately visible from the street, so make sure you build in some time for finding it as well as for securing parking. I was glad I had read the reviews that mentioned being in there more than an hour and making sure to refill the meter. It sounds like the receptionist taking awhile to greet people is a common occurrence, plus they take some time putting your info in the computer and making you fill out paperwork. The massage itself I thought was excellent, given my limited area of expertise. Shanice was very thorough and professional. Not a talker (another thing the past reviews had me worried about). She made sure to ask beforehand if I needed to use the restroom first and if there were any areas she should focus on. She went through back, neck, arms, hands, face, legs, and feet, which left me feeling great at the end. On the way out you get a complimentary bottle of water - make sure not to forget yours at the counter like I did on the way out... d'oh! I have 2 more sessions on my groupon so I'll definitely be coming back and am looking forward to it. I don't know that I'll return after those are done though unless I get another deal. read more

I had an experience very similar to the other reviews on here. The lobby isn't necessarily a relaxing spa-like setting, more like grandmas livingroom crossed with sushi restaurant. The employees were nice enough, but very casual. Nothing really seemed professional, so I was surprised to hear they had been in business for more than 7 years. The massage was good, if she would have been quiet and let me enjoy it. The girl was fairly new- and was very nice. Its probably my fault for not directly telling her to be quiet, but I thought my short answers, not engaging in continuing the conversation would halt it. Didn't work. I wanted so badly to love this place! I adore supporting local business as well as all-natural products but this place was not good at all. I came from Chicago for job interviews, and decided to schedule some relaxation while I was there. The online scheduling process was very convenient. The space, as others have mentioned is nor great. It is a wide open lofted room, roughly separated by a fee thin walls and curtains. I came in for a facial and thought the whole staff was unprofessional from the moment I walked in. Calling this business a spa is certainly a stretch. The facial itself wasn't awful. I was covered only by a thin sheet and given no robe so I left my clothes on for the most part. I was cold the entire time and the bed was not heated well. No extractions. No exfoliation. I received a steam and a mask. No massage of the neck and shoulders. No scents. Perhaps I had too high of expectations, as the prices are quite low. This spa could have potential with some major changes. I will stick to Aveda in the future. read more

I came home from Chicago for a visit and found myself in need of some upper back massage help. I booked an appointment online (super-duper easy; I love when businesses set this up for customers) for the same day. Inner Peace is open relatively late, which is a really nice thing. I was unfortunately a few minutes late, but Ann, my massage therapist, was very nice about it. The massage was really great and she was very attentive with a great sense of humor. The massage space was clean and inviting. The front desk person, who I think might have been the owner, was also incredibly nice and gave me a small care package with an eye mask, a vegan lip balm, and a candle. Very nice! The massage was quite affordable, too. The *only* downside is that the location is clearly in the middle of a transition. The space is a bit rough - you can tell it used to be office space - but it seems that they're working on remodeling, so be warned. Otherwise, a great value for the money, great staff. I tried out Inner Peace with a groupon for the bamboo massage. The front desk area suggests that maybe they are still trying to get established (random pieces of furniture.. and just.. random things...), which is just fine but does look unfinished. I had no problems with scheduling, and really appreciated that they do Sunday appointments. However, they never asked, as all other massage places have asked me, whether or not I had a preference for a male or female masseuse. It just got sent to me in a confirmation that I had a male masseuse. I didn't want to be a pain or have to reschedule, so, despite the fact that I have always preferred and requested female masseuses, well, ok. The atmosphere: There is a long hallway of rooms, and I thought it was nice that each staff person had somewhat personalized their workspace. Now, I've always been vaguely mocking of goofy relaxation music at spas, but now I know why it's there: to fill in the somewhat awkward silence and drown out background noise. During a good portion of the massage, I could hear muffled talking in other rooms, which wasn't awful, but somewhat distracting. The massage: The massage was fine- the masseuse explained the bamboo technique before we started. The bamboo massage might be nice if you prefer to be touched with an instrument and not as much hands. Probably not so great if you are ticklish, because I'm not, and some parts were still somewhat uncomfortable, though the masseuse adjusted it when he noticed. Basically, it's like you are being rolled out with a variety of bamboo rolling pins. The day of, I actually didn't feel much of the instant gratification I'm used to with a traditional massage. I will say the day after I did feel that my muscles were less tense, so that is a plus. All in all, for the groupon deal, I'm mostly satisfied. It wasn't a spectacular experience, but it was okay. I'm not quite sure I had an actual hour of the massage part. I had forgotten what the real price of the bamboo massage was and looked it up when I got home: a whopping $90 for an hour. I'm not sure I could afford that, like, ever, and am not sure it would be worth it to me to pay that much, ever. Inner Peace does offer a variety of other spa services, though, and I might check out a more affordable and shorter regular Swedish massage. read more

Based on other reviews I have read about Inner Peace, I was a little afraid to go but I had bought the groupon for a massage and facial so I thought that if it was bad I could just leave. The space is a little interesting and everyone is dressed casually, but what mattered the most, the massage, was great. I have twice been able to buy Groupons that make the massage on $30. A great deal for a sore body. The first time I went here, I had a fantastic massage! I scheduled it for just a couple hours after I had run a race. The masseuse gave me an incredible firm massage that left me with no aches and pains. Imagine my heartbreak when I found out he had left Inner Peace! This time I had Sharon. I told her that I likes a firm massage and she delivered. There were a couple of times when it was too much and she quickly backed off when I told her. I was surprised that she didn't ask me if there was any specific place I wanted worked on, but honestly there wasn't one so it didn't bother me. All in all, I walked away incredibly satisfied. The atmosphere is poor, especially considering the image they project on their website. Nothing about this place is spa-like. In fact, it's a bit awkward. I used a Groupon for a 90-minute deep tissue massage. The treatment itself was decent and certainly focused on my problem areas. My massage therapist talked more than any other masseuse I've experienced, which was a bit distracting from the relaxation. I understand that he was trying to gain more information to help focus the treatment. But then continued to be a little chatty, which I didn't care for. And I didn't like that he used his fingernails when massaging my hands and wrists. Ew. The staff was definitely accommodating with scheduling, but the whole place just feels a bit unprofessional. Well...sigh. This place isn't terrible, and depending on who you get, might actually be decent. But you need to know some things. Here's my two cents: 1) This is not a spa. I know it says it in the name, and that's the problem. This is just a massage place. There is nothing wrong with that, especially if you don't have the time to use all the facilities a spa has to offer, or if you want to save money. But you should know that before you go. 2) The "couple's massage", for whatever reason, is not a couple's massage. It's a massage that takes place at roughly the same time as yours, in another room with another therapist. I don't get it, but whatever. 3) The basic massage is REALLY light pressure (read: lotion application). When I got into the room, my therapist told me this, and that if I wanted to upgrade to harder pressure, I could do that for $10. I don't like upselling in that situation, so I refused on principle. My husband, getting his "couple's massage" in the other room, later told me that his massage was decent pressure, and his therapist did not ask him to upgrade. 4) The service (as you can see from #3), is all over the map. There don't seem to be any standards, so unless you can find someone and stick with them, the reviews will be all over the map. This is the company's second problem. 5) My therapist (and this seems to be a trend) was REALLY chatty. I do not like this, and almost asked her to stop talking. In fact, I just didn't answer her and hoped she got the hint. She didn't. 6) In my room (and also in my husband's), pandora (or something) was playing. Something that had commercials, and lots of them. And they were loud. This in itself was enough to make me not go back. Loud car commercials in the middle of a lotion application? No thank you. 7) The place is a bit hard to find, and the only parking is metered street parking that only goes up to an hour. So if you are slightly early for your appointment, your meter is going to run out of time All in all, this wasn't absolutely horrible. It wasn't dirty, no one assaulted me, etc. Most of my issues could have been solved by me speaking up or by more money. The major problem is that in several areas, they weren't what was advertised. So, if you pay the extra money, bring your own music and music player, tell the therapist to be quiet..you might be ok. And my husband had a good experience. I have never had a massage from anyone other than a girlfriend before. So when I got a groupon for christmas from Beth for a couples Massage, I was ready to dive in head first. Beth called and tried to make an appointment, earliest time was about 3 weeks away. So we waited... Finally the time came and we headed out. Upon arrival we had a hard time figuring out which door to use. All but one was locked, and the locked door had signs on it saying to use the other door. Guess your supposed to use your decoder ring to figure out which door to use. Once we got it and verified with the receptionist our appointment, they requested that we pay tax, $7. Not sure why we had to or why they taxed us at the full groupon amount and not the amount we paid but hey, I'm not going complain much. So the masseuse came out and asked Beth and I to follow her. When we got back we discovered that we each got separate rooms. I was ok with that, I wore my big boy pants that day. I was asked to strip down as far as i was comfortable with and cover myself with a towel then she left the room. I did as instructed and she came in a few minutes later. She asked if there were any certain areas of focus. I said its my first time, start at one side and work your way to the other. That got her laughing and we talked about anything and everything the entire massage. I didn't mind, i prefer conversation to silence for relaxation. I guess we both lost track of time, because we went over our one hour time. The massage itself wasn't special by any means. She worked on my knots and sore spots on my legs. She left the room and asked me to get dressed. Not using my head i stood up and slipped on the floor and banged my head on the table. Note to self, next time wipe your feet before you get off the bed! When I walked out Beth was waiting, letting me know that they could here us laughing and talking. My masseuse walked up with a bottle of water and we finished up our conversation before we headed out. Will i go back for the massage alone, prob not. If i get a groupon again, then yeah. read more

I'm not sure why this place is called inner peace spa, you cannot get any peace in this spa unless if you are the only customer in the entire place. I recommend salon lofts for any spa needs. The building at first glance is a bit sketchy. The doors are locked and you have to call to get buzzed in. When you enter, you go up the elevators that takes you to the spa. It is a wide open area. There's nothing special in there. I got my eye lash extensions because of a promo on groupon. My lashes were great but the experience was not. The workers there were rude, when I entered they didnt acknowledge me. I had to go find someone. The technician that applied my lashes was wonderful,but she was the only one. There is no privacy. Everyone getting served is in the same room and you just hear everyone's conversations. Even the waiting room is in the same space so husbands waiting on their wives were just all able to watch everyone get their services and make comments which was uncomfortable. It's not like this at the salon lofts, where you are in a private room. When I went to pay, they asked for tax which doesn't normally happen when you use a groupon. I paid cash and they didn't have change so I left a tip. I'm not going back to this place. It was not a relaxing or good experience. read more

I received a gift certificate as a Mother's Day gift, and finally got around to making an appointment this week. Being as much of a runner as I can be these days post-baby, I asked for a 60-minute deep tissue massage with Juliana. I picked her because that was the one employee that I read about on yelp reviews that seemed to stand out. Parking isn't that bad if you're willing to walk a couple of blocks. I parked on Court St. between Walnut and Vine streets. There are many 2 hour meters there that are $2 an hour. The lots near Inner Peace are about $6 an hour. I agree...the decorating inside is weird; however, the massage room was dimly lit with decent music playing. I found it odd that there were no consent forms to sign or questions to fill out. I've always had to do that in the past, but was happy to skip that part here. Juliana was really nice and asked me to undress to my comfort level, but added that she could really work my glutes and hips if I completely disrobed. The bed was comfortable, but the towel used to cover myself reminded me of the free towels available at the YMCA. They could have used some serious fabric softener and about another inch of thickness. Juliana told me to let her know if I wanted more or less pressure as she got started. I don't know if it's because my entire body is out of whack after having given birth, breastfeeding for the past 14 months (hello stiff neck and shoulders!), having to completely adjust my workout routine (read: just cardio--no time for weights), OR if she is just really, really firm, but I had to ask her to lighten up twice!! Granted, deep tissue is not necessarily a relaxing massage, and I've had them in the past, but this was intense. It's been 24 hours since the massage, and I still feel like I did about 200 push ups yesterday. This is normal, and it will go away. We did talk quite a bit, and I normally don't like talking during a massage, but this time I did because it helped to distract me from the discomfort. Just like telling her to lighten up, I would have told her that I prefer silence had I felt the need to do so. She seemed very open to that. I do plan on going back in about a month, and I will ask for her again. If I happen to feel like silence, I will let her know before we start the massage, because I think it would be awkward to say something during the massage. read more

I received a gift groupon from a friend for a manicure and pedicure before going on spring break. I went on a week night with a friend. I was disappointed with the service. For some reason the front door was locked and there was no one at the desk to let us in and I had to call them several times before letting us in. The staff was unprofessional and making negative comments about customers in front of us. As far as the manicure and pedicure, it was atrocious. After seeing the "french" on my toes I passed on the manicure. I'm pretty sure they hired some random college student off the street that day. She was a bit talkative, but not overly talkative. I prefer to not be talked too at all during a massage, because I prefer to drift off into la-la land and enjoy it. However, I had no problems with the little bit of chatting. I definitely left feeling much more relaxed then when I came in. I would go back if there is another Groupon. Overall, I would give this a 2.5. Not great, but not terrible. If there were a word of focus for my recommendation, it would be "professionalism". Upon entering, I found a wide open space with a lot of sunlight due to its location on the third floor. Nice. Then I stood and waited for a bit until I was acknowledged and helped (two of the ladies were busy with clients). Ironically, the young woman sitting and completely engrossed in her phone (as I stood there waiting to be helped) ended up being my masseuse. When the lady helping me told me they could work me in immediately, the young lady shrugged, said "ok", and hopped up. The overall atmosphere could be better. Not so much due to the location, but even after closing the door to my massage room, I could hear the conversations with other clients. I typically look for some form of separation/escape in my massage room, but that was pretty difficult as the music was blaring some 70's/80's funk/soul and then it completely stopped for about 30 minutes during my massage. Sadly, that meant I had to listen to the buzzing of my masseuse's cell phone on the counter (MULTIPLE times). I doubt ANYONE wants their masseuse checking their phone during a service. It made me feel very secondary and not like a client at all. Completely nullified any ability to fully relax. The towel that they used to cover me felt cheap, and it was pretty thin and scratchy. Just something else that took away from the experience. The masseuse was very sweet and the massage was fair - not great but nothing to complain about. She asked about firmness and worked on my hips & shoulders after I cited them as my trouble spots. Again, it felt like I was standing between her and the end of her day or something. She is clearly trained and has GREAT hands, but I can tell when a masseuse is focusing on me vs just checking off areas on my body and clearly thinking of other things. She did not introduce herself or ask much more beyond trouble spots and firmness. It all felt very rushed. This place clearly has some potential and talent. But it could use a hefty dose of professionalism to help push it to the next level. Some small improvements would go a very long way toward increasing clientele, especially since the top hotels in the city refer their guests there.
