The building was built in 1895 and was once a department store, theatre and offices. I loved the variety of art showcased as well as the pieces in many price ranges. I also enjoyed the current exhibition of student artwork. Besides the art gallery on the first floor, there is a performing arts center upstairs. Customer service was friendly when I purchased my art and given some of the history of AOA.

We always find time to do a family craft…read more- we've done so many things - pottery, painted ceramics, wine & paint, jewelry, tie-dye but this mixed media was - By. Far. Our. FAVORITE! It was so much fun, perfect for all levels of creativity/skill, and the instructor/owner was delightful. I changed my mind on my project shortly after beginning & asked if I could do a different design, offering to pay for the supplies I'd used. She was fabulous, gracious, & generous. Another aspect of her teaching style that I really appreciated was that she would help as much or as little as a student wanted. If we had done this craft earlier in the week, we all agreed that we would have gone back again, there were so many cool designs and it was so much fun. If I could give 10 stars I would.

They offer a lot of cool classes and even take home canvases that have a pre-drawn image. This is what we ended up getting. We got three for about $100. Sadly, we were pretty disappointed with the actual product we got. When you get the canvas it shows what the image is supposed to look like when it's completed, and it comes with paints. I don't know what I expected but I got a canvas that had a hand drawn, in pencil, horse on it. That's it. With written instructions. Honestly I didn't mind the canvas being hand drawn but please get someone to do a better drawing? I don't know. For $30 each it's just not what i personally expected. I think overall maybe just stick with the classes and skip this part.

I was able to make two trips to the gallery and I made purchases both times. I really enjoyed looking at the variety of locally made art. In the end, I proudly purchased several pieces of pottery from different potters, two photographs from different photographers and a greeting card with a watercolor print on the front. I am most excited about a framed photograph of the iconic Sea Foam hotel from photographer Cyndi Goetcheus Sarfan. Aside from the aforementioned items, the store has various types of paintings, jewelry, sculptures, glass, candles and mixed media art. The employees, who I believe are local artists themselves, were very friendly.

I looked up the instructor online - Gabrielle Graber - and was so impressed with her work it made me a bit nervous that the class was going to be above my head. Gabe was terrific - she was able to break down the process into very achieveable segments. I made a couple of small pieces, then a life-size foot. If someone told me last week that I would make a realistic looking body part from clay as a result of this class, I would have told them they were nuts. But I did - I'm usually overly critical of my own work, but I was very happy with what I was able to accomplish. This workshop absolutely exceeded my expectations. Additionally, the staff was friendly, the sleeping rooms were spotless, and I really enjoyed getting to know Gabe. Pocosin runs workshops in all kinds of media - clay, painting, metalwork, etc. If you are looking for a creative outlet and/or a fun weekend away, go to Pocosin!
