I had liked it at first, but the more I looked at it, the less I liked it. (I couldn't go back and edit my original review to make it more accurate. Lesson learned, I won't write anymore reviews until the experience sinks in a little!) So I took a shot at the Main Street Barber Shop. Timmy seemed like he knows what he's doing, but he wasn't doing it when I was in his chair. I think the problem was related to him reeking of marijuana. No judgment about smoking, but you need to bring your game face to work. And 9:30 in the morning seems kind of early to be firing up a big old spleef out back. I had to come back another day to get it cleaned up. But that cost me another hour and a half: drive there, cruise around looking for a parking spot (have you ever tried to park a car in Metuchen?) waiting for a barber, the actual cut, drive home... Who has that much time to waste? And the repair job required cutting my hair shorter: not really stellar. A semi-crew cut wasn't what I was looking for, I needed to look sharp for a job interview. I'm going with 3 stars here because they were packed first thing Saturday morning; they must be doing something right. Otherwise, it would have been just 2 stars.

I saw kids, and college students getting haircuts from the two barbers, both of whom were very nice. I was happy with my haircut, and the barber used a razor to finish fixing it, which to me is the difference between a good cut, and some rando haircut place. She also asked me whether I wanted to trim or blend my hair, which is exactly the right kind of question, because I never know what I want and I have to be nudged in the right direction. I like the I could use a credit card to pay, and to leave a tip. My only suggestion would be for the barbers to use warm foam. Also New Brunswick is a pain to park in, so give yourself time to get there.

The kid goes down for a nap and my wife green lit the hair cut. I got there 10 minutes early and they were able to take me a few minutes early which I appreciated. The guy who cut my hair was good. He was young looking but he did a great job. He did a lot of attention to detail with my beard and whipped out a straight razor to clean up my brow a bit. I thought the prices were affordable and the shop was clean. Added bonus for Rutgers students they have a discount which is always nice. In about 30 minutes I was transformed from possibly homeless to stylin. And located on George Street in New Brunswick is pretty central. Worth checking out if you need a hair cut.

I can't even fall asleep…read more Called the salon today to make an appointment and was so sad to hear that my talented hairstylist Allen no longer works here. Receptionist asked if she can assign me with someone else. I said anyone but Jimmy (owner). My son and I had him once before and he did not do a good job. When I walked in today, they gave me Leo. He took over Allen's station. I asked for 2" off with lots of layers to give my hair some volume since I have very thin hair. Leo showed me how much he would cut off and I gave him the go ahead. I thought Asians are supposed to be great at math but holy shhhh he started cutting and cutting and cutting and it got shorter and shorter. At this point it was hard for me to say something. Pretty sure that he cut off FIVE whole inches. Not only did he cut off 5" but the layers he gave me were very choppy, it looks like he hacked it with a saw. The receptionist came by to sweep up my hair with a dust pan and my eyes were bugging out because I was in shock at how much he cut off. I spend an obscene amount on high quality hair products at home to keep my hair healthy. Now it looks like shhhh. Never in my entire life have I ever gotten such a bad cut. I know it's just hair and it will grow back but I felt I need to write this review to warn others. When layers are trimmed, it should fall softy and naturally. He also thinned out my ends so much that it looks weird. OMG!! I can't!! The strange thing is, all the best stylist at this salon, Allen, Ben, Jackie left. One of two people sitting in back stood up and volunteered while the other kept playing NBA 2k without moving. Why neither were already cutting hair to help with backlog is beyond me. While the young man proceeded to cut my hair, I learned through his own sharing that he was not licensed, still in hair cutting school and it was his first day on the job. All things that would've made me say NO when asked if I wanted another barber. I then proceeded to hear about his hip hop career and how he also works as a waiter. He may some day become a decent barber, but today wasn't that day. I showed him a very clear picture of what I wanted. He did not execute. He was timid with the shears and didn't go any where near as high as asked. Scissor cut a lot of hair I never get cut by scissors. Mostly on upper sides. The buzz lines were uneven on either side of my head. The length on top varies significantly from side to side and front to back. I still have hair on back of neck and at lower part of hairline that should never be there. I also learned that the owners, think they said Juan and Mike, don't come in. When I attempted to speak to Randy, who was the most senior person there, he was confrontational and argumentative. He took offense to the fact I was upset he dished me to an unlicensed trainee on their first day without sharing that info. He made no effort to quell the situation other than to "explain to me" why I was wrong for being upset and disrespected as a returning customer. When l asked another patron who was also upset what time his appointment was, he said 3:30. It was 4:45 and his son was still in the chair. He indicated, he needed Randy to finish because they were late. At that point I left. This establishment is being run by an immature barber who is not ready to manage. He even said at one point, "I'm not the boss here bro". They have 2 unlicensed, still in training barbers on staff and no one else. Avoid at all costs!!
