[This review was made in 11/2020 during the COVID-19 pandemic] It all makes sense now why a bunch of my friends are always getting their cuts from Razorsharp. This place is the new wave of barbershops that, as the business says themselves, "is a creation of old school barbering mixing along with the new." And on top of that, their attention to detail is on point. I got my cut from Sam and was extremely pleased with the results! Not only did I appreciate the cut because I left feeling more confident with how I looked, but also because of the quality of conversation I had with Sam. Overall, Razorsharp delivered and was very much in line with COVID-19 expectations of safety. Upon entering, I had my temperature taken and was given hand sanitizer. All barbers and customers were wearing masks and transparent barriers were placed between all stations. Used to be good pre-covid. They raised the price which is understandable but the service sucks now. They didn't honor my appointment and made me just wait without any updates. Great Barber Shop! Got a Saturday noon appointment on short notice. New guy on a tryout -- Christian -- did a good job under tough circumstances. A really sharp, clean, old-school flat top is a hard cut to do. There's not a lot left, so any small mistake is visible. Christian is in a tough spot, because I'm comparing him to my regular guy who's been doing flat tops since 1980. But he did a good job, 3.2 out of 4. A little room for growth. The place has a cool vibe, young, gritty urban blended with traditional barbershop (the kind your old man took you to when you were a kid). I could live without the hip hop playing. (But I'm old). I went to Razor Sharp because of all of the fantastic reviews the place has gotten here on Yelp. I have a nape undercut and wanted a design, but wasn't sure what I wanted, and my usual hair salon doesn't do designs. I'd never been inside a barbershop before. I walked in and was immediately taken care of by Eddie. I told him to do whatever he wanted and he took his time, was very professional and helped me relax. I'm very happy with the result and I'll definitely be going back! The place was very clean and the staff were all friendly. I can see why they have so many good reviews. Edit: Eddie has moved to their other location (The Wolves Den in Westfield) so I have been taken care of by Dylan and once by Carlo. I have since had my sides shaved as well--I'm sporting a 360-degree undercut now-- and have been going back every few weeks to get freestyle designs done. I've been very happy and am always getting compliments on my hair. These guys don't just cut hair; they are artists. In July 2016 they had the shop completely remodeled, and it looks even classier than before. Edit, July 2017: I've been a consistent customer of Razor Sharp for over two years now, and the cleanliness and quality of service is definitely still there. I book all of my appointments with Dylan, and I love the ease of booking appointments online. However, their prices have gone up to $35 just to give my undercut a simple fade, and that's a bit steep every few weeks. Outstanding service! I was able to make an appointment within a day, no hassle. I had made the mistake of trying to trim my own beard before my trip to NJ. I needed help correcting my beard for New Years Eve. I was expecting a basic trim and haircut. Instead I received a full service, 1 hour haircut and beard reshape. Patient and actually cares about his clients as the rest of guys equally. Generally 30 minutes or so depending on the style. They do everything and not afraid to experiment with permission. I've known Khalil Malamug for a little over 9 years now. My brother first introduced me to him back when he was first cutting at In The Cut Barbershop in Dunellen NJ. Off the bat you could tell that he was serious about his craft. A couple of years later both him and his cousin Dylan (aka D) ended up going to another shop in NJ: Chief Barbershop in Piscataway NJ. That's when their craft started to take off and you saw how the clientele loved their work. Eventually Khalil Malamug left that shop and created this amazing spot you all know as Razorsharp Barbershop & Shave Parlor. Man, I'll never go to any other barbershop than this one right here. It's always quality a haircut experience when you walk in. Although appointments are strongly recommended (because of the number of clientele they have) the wait for a walk-in usually takes anywhere from 5-30 minutes. However it's always worth it in the end. As for barbers to recommend, in all honesty ALL OF THEM. There is not one barber at RSBS that I would not feel comfortable cutting my hair. There's a reason why they're even there in the first place. Khalil takes his time evaluating all barbers separately to assure himself that his clients will be getting the best possible experience. They even have an Instagram to check out all of their cuts! @rsbsx13 If you're looking for $10-$15 haircuts, you're better off going somewhere else. This place is serious quality, and with quality comes patience. You cannot expect a quality haircut for a low price and done under 20 minutes. When I was poor, young kid in my early 20s, just trying to make ends meet working my first job in the Wall Street district, I did what most poor, young kids like me did: spend all my money on things I had no right to be spending it on. One of those things was a membership to John Allen's in downtown Manhattan. Billing itself as an "exclusive men's grooming club," it was a place where men went to be pampered by beautiful women, cutting their hair, grooming their nails, shining their shoes, massaging their faces, trimming up beards, serving up draft beers... everything short of a happy ending. I may have been the tenant of a cramped, 9' by 6' bedroom in the dingiest of dingy flophouses in the eerie depths of Chinatown at the time -- but I was a customer of John f*cking Allen's, yo. Which meant I felt like "the man." Oh, those were the days. Fast forward all these years later, and now living in the suburbs, I have always longed for something akin to that John Allen's experience. I don't even have a lot of hair left, and I typically get Marc N. to shine my shoes, so my needs are pretty simple. For the last few years I have lived on the standard issue $12 barbershop haircut, where I am in and out in about 6 minutes, and the results are generally fine. But then I started seeing reviews for Razor Sharp, in nearby Metuchen. Could this really be that elusive, old-school barbershop experience I've been longing for? Oh, you bet it is. I called ahead on a Sunday, sensing that it would be smart to make an appointment even though the Website states that walk-ins are accepted. (Great Website, BTW.) Jimmy would be taking care of me. So later that afternoon, I made the trip into Metuchen, cautiously excited for what was to come. The place was packed. I believe they were in the midst of a grand re-opening party or something. All I know is that I walked in, was greeted and given a seat on a nice, comfy couch, and immediately offered a beer. My appointment with Jimmy started right on time. Despite the fact that I am nearing that stage where my haircut will soon just be a clean shave, I was amazed at the time, effort, and precision that Jimmy put in to grooming every single hair on my head and face. Clearly, these guys take enormous pride in their trade, and see their work as a form of art. And judging by the cuts I saw coming out of this place, I must concur. They do great work here, and the booming business they are doing here proves it. I always tell people -- it's the little things in life that matter. The simple joy of getting a killer shoeshine carries me all day long. And now I can add a great haircut to that list. At $35 for a cut and a beard trim, I find this to be money well spent. And while no amount of skill will ever bring back my totally awesome, Sun In-bleached, Flock of Seagulls haircut from the 1980s, I can at least walk away feeling like the million dollars I used to piss away at John Allen's every year. So I drive past this place on a Monday and see it is opened. I walk in and make an appointment for Thursday. As I walked in the place is clean and what one would expect from a place with Razor in its name. I leave and keep on with my day. On Tuesday I see that my day has some free time and a nice close shave sounds like a good idea. Lucky me they have a slot and slide in. They explained that they do a razor shave using a hot and cold towel process. I ask for my head and face razor shave and off we go. Gil (aka Bubie) is my guy for this journey. He cleans his station as I sit down and readies his tools. I sit and off we go. His skill and closeness was one of the best I have had in years. He listened when I explained how I wanted my goatee shaped. He did a great job and I thought the $35.00 for head and face shave was well worth it. I can see the young folks liking it more for the hip hop feeling. But they still can do an old school shave like an old time barber shop.
