Hans answered the phone and was so pleasant and easy to talk to, I just knew I had to have him tune the piano. My piano had sticky keys in the lower register and I knew it needed a good tuning. I've been playing since I was 5 but I'm not that good. However, I can tell when the sound is not good. Hans came and instantly noticed everything right away. He was extremely thorough and you can tell that he's not only a music lover but a piano lover as well. And he is so funny! Cracks the funniest jokes. My keys actually needed some repairs and he had to remove the keys, (I didn't even know you could!) to fix the pins. Then came the tuning. Hans took his time making sure each of the 88 keys was just right. Then afterwards he played the most beautiful music, all the classics, Schubert, Beethoven, Chopin etc. When he asked me to play, he gave me some tips that I didn't even know about and gave me some confidence I didn't have. It's an upright Kimball piano and in great condition, but it hadn't been tuned in forever. Hans came and tuned it up for us, and now it sounds amazing. He said it had long strings, which made for good sound. He worked for about 45 minutes. When done, instead of the $240, he raised the price to $330, almost $100 over the initial price. Whatever extra service he thought justified the price increase, it did not include anything except time, which, as I mentioned, was 45 minutes in total. The kicker is that the top ten keys of the piano sound worse than before he "tuned" them. I called him once, and he said he was sick. He hung up on me. I called him a second time, and he said he resented my criticizing his work, he suggested it was my hearing, he suggested I buy a new piano, and no, he would not come and see if he could fix anything without charging me. And again he hung up on me.

Now let me preface this by saying, I am a professional musician, not a hobbyist. My instrument is my full time job and as such I take great pride and care in keeping my brand new grand piano in pristine condition. I was expecting to have a great experience with Krista, unfortunately thins was not the case and please take my account as a warning. If your grand piano investment is worth a lot to you I do not recommend her. There was a service she needed to do and it required taking out the key bed. She however did not do this with the utmost care. When reassembling the piano and putting the key cover back on she managed to hit both sides of the frame and left substantial scratches and nicks in the perfectly polished glossy black finish. This is completely unacceptable. I expect she works on upwards of $100,000 instruments fairly often, so to be so cavalier in your service is beyond me. Now I have to find a qualified technician to repair the finish on a brand new grand piano. If you care at all about your instrument and pay attention to the details, stay away from Krista's service. Save yourself the headache I beg you.

After some research, we found the Windsmith, located in the neighborhood of North Park, with exceptional reviews. We were lucky to have found Franco, who specializes in woodwind instrument repairs, to take a look at the old flute. He said the necessary maintenance was not extensive and gave us a very affordable quote for repairs to get the flute back in shape. In less than a week, we had the flute fixed up and ready to be played. Thank you Franco, and we will be back again for regular maintenance.
